BBC - Israel and the Arabs: Elusive Peace (2005)
English | Documentary | Size: 1.81 GB

The events of 1998 to 2005 in the fraught history of the Arab-Israeli peace process.

Chapter 1: Clinton
Bill Clinton was persuaded by Prime Minister Ehud Barak to devote his last 18 months of office to settling the conflict. However, progress was hampered by the violence of the intifada and Ariel Sharon's visit to the Temple Mount complex in Jerusalem.

Chapter 2: Arafat
How the Israeli government reacted to a Hamas suicide bomb, which hit a hotel during Passover in March 2002. Ministers discussed the possibilities of exiling Yasser Arafat from the Palestinian territories, or even wiping out his compound with a single attack. As US Secretary of State Colin Powell attempted to get Arafat to denounce terror, defence forces began targeting the guerrilla leaders one by one.

Chapter 3: Sharon
A look at how a reluctant President Bush became involved in the peace process after the Iraq war placed him at the centre of the conflict in the Middle East. Forced to court Arab allies, the US leader tried to persuade Ariel Sharon to call a truce - but the Israeli Prime Minister soon moved the goalposts.
