English | 2017 | pages: 129 | ISBN: 1443817473 | PDF | 0,6 mb
Abhinavagupta was a Kashmiri practitioner of the Sanskrit tradition, well-known to those very few researchers who follow theories on Indian aesthetics. His contribution to the tradition of aesthetic theories is extensive; he established a university to educate 10,000 students in aesthetics, tantra vigyan and traditional Sanskrit theories, and he authored 47 books, out of which 23 are still in existence. Students, researchers and faculties from Sanskrit departments, as well as Sanskrit practitioners, should be exposed to the illuminating practices available in Indian traditions and the theories originating in Kashmir. In this book, a detailed analysis is carried out on Abhinavaguptas two splendid commentaries, Locana on Dhvanyloka and Abhinavabhrat on Ntyastra. Abhinavagupta presented the views of Lollata, Saankuka and Bhattanayaka, with each view followed by relevant criticism. He also set forth his own views in great detail and these are widely discussed in this text. The book will be of interest to scholars from the fields of Indian aesthetics, Natyashastra, principles of meaning, literary criticism, Indology, Sanskrit texts and linguistics.

Materiality in Roman Art and Architecture Aesthetics, Semantics, and Function (Issn, 3)
Free Download Annette Haug, "Materiality in Roman Art and Architecture: Aesthetics, Semantics, and Function (Issn, 3) "
English | ISBN: 3110762900 | 2022 | 280 pages | EPUB | 15 MB
The focus of this volume is on the aesthetics, semantics and function of materials in Roman antiquity between the 2nd century B.C. and the 2nd century A.D. It includes contributions on both architectural spaces (and their material design) and objects - types of 'artefacts' that differ greatly in the way they were used, perceived and loaded with cultural significance. With respect to architecture, the analysis of material aesthetics leads to a new understanding of the performance, imitation and transformation of surfaces, including the social meaning of such strategies. In the case of objects, surface treatments are equally important. However, object form (a specific design category), which can enter into tension with materiality, comes into particular focus. Only when materials are shaped do their various qualities emerge, and these qualities are, to a greater or lesser extent, transferred to objects. With a focus primarily on Roman Italy, the papers in this volume underscore the importance of material design and highlight the awareness of this matter in the ancient world.

Presuming that the problem of political equality, as it bears on both persons and assemblages, is about being accorded access to the material and symbolic resources needed to manage an effective civic presence, Michael J. Shapiro's critical interventions engage the way aesthetic genres illustrate this problem. Addressing literary, cinematic, photographic, musical, art historical, and architectural compositions, Shapiro's inquiries encounter the way a wide variety of texts elevate voices, bodies, and life dramas that have existed below thresholds of recognition.

E-BooksThe Aesthetics of Desire and Surprise Phenomenology and Speculation

The Aesthetics of Desire and Surprise Phenomenology and Speculation
Free Download Jadranka Skorin-Kapov, "The Aesthetics of Desire and Surprise: Phenomenology and Speculation"
English | ISBN: 149851846X | 2015 | 212 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The Aesthetics of Desire and Surprise: Phenomenology and Speculation covers issues central to contemporary continental philosophy (desire, expectations, excess, rupture, transcendence, immanence, surprise). The proposed term desire||surprise captures the phenomenological-speculative character of the pair not yet and no longer. Non-obvious parallels between different thinkers are drawn, and the argumentation is organized around philosophical figures relevant in the sequence desire - excess -pause (rupture, break) - recuperation (surprise). The works of Levinas, Žižek, Bataille, Blanchot, Foucault, and Ricoeur are interpreted and positioned according to the proposed template of desire - excess - pause. The consideration of limit experiences involves authors fascinated by transgression, and the question of whether excess is immanent or transcendent. This discussion considers works by Nietzsche, Deleuze, Žižek, and Foucault. The analysis of surprise and the beginning of recovery after the pause considers works by Fink, Merleau-Ponty, Nancy, Lyotard, Dufrenne, Bachelard, and Seel. The provocative argument elaborated in this work is that surprise starts with indifference. Furthermore, the argument is that surprise begins where the concept reaches its ending, hence that the limit of speculative thinking at its ending is the limit of aesthetics at its beginning. The work of Hegel, Schelling and Jaspers are discussed in order to argue for the beginning of aesthetics there where knowledge ends.

E-BooksAesthetics of Music Musicological Perspectives

Aesthetics of Music Musicological Perspectives
Free Download Aesthetics of Music: Musicological Perspectives By Stephen Downes
2014 | 311 Pages | ISBN: 0415699096 | PDF | 9 MB
Aesthetics of Music: Musicological Approaches is an anthology of fourteen essays, each addressing a single key concept or pair of terms in the aesthetics of music, collectively serving as an authoritative work on musical aesthetics that remains as close to 'the music' as possible. Each essay includes musical examples from works in the 18th, 19th, and into the 20th century. Topics have been selected from amongst widely recognised central issues in musical aesthetics, as well as those that have been somewhat neglected, to create a collection that covers a distinctive range of ideas. All essays cover historical origins, sources, and developments of the chosen idea, survey important musicological approaches, and offer new critical angles or musical case studies in interpretation.

E-BooksHeteronormativity, Passionate Aesthetics and Symbolic Subversion in Asia

Heteronormativity, Passionate Aesthetics and Symbolic Subversion in Asia
Free Download Saskia E. Wieringa, "Heteronormativity, Passionate Aesthetics and Symbolic Subversion in Asia "
English | ISBN: 1845197690 | 2015 | 296 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This book examines life trajectories among three categories of women living beyond the bounds of heteronormativity in Jakarta and Delhi, two major cities with substantively different religious and social values: women who have lost their husbands, either through divorce or death; sex workers; and young, urban lesbians. Delhi has a large Hindu majority and a sizeable Muslim minority, amongst other religious and cultural pluralities. The Indian state is constitutionally committed to secularism and equal respect to all regions despite right-wing Hindu fundamentalism. Jakarta is the capital of a sprawling archipelago with a large variety of ethnic cultures, Indonesia having the largest Muslim population of the world, as well as sizeable ethnic and religious minorities comprising Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and others. The Indonesian state is constitutionally secular, but religion plays a large role in public life and is embedded in regulations that strongly impact people's private lives. Recently, there have been strong political currents to impose stricter Islamic codes. The public arena of sexual politics, in which the media play an important role, is explored in both cities. Hot sex is a major media selling point, particularly in Indonesia. Heteronormativity entails a system of symbolic violence in the sense that it punishes those that it excludes and polices those that it includes; the ways its powers are subverted are likewise symbolic. Passionate aesthetics refers to the dynamics, motivations, codes of behavior and presentation, subjectivities and identities that together make up the complex workings of erotic attraction, sexual relations and partnerships patterns. By charting the lives of women who live beyond the boundaries of the heteronormative, commonalities are revealed; boundaries and regulatory mechanisms in the context of symbolic violence are delineated; and the issue of the struggle for sexual rights for marginalized groups, and their open rebellion, brought to the fore. At the heart of the book lies elaboration of the ways Asian families are constructed - their social, economic, sexual and religious agency, and how these engage with state-led values. The book is written with the assistance of Abha Bhaiya and Nursyahbani Katjasungkana, and a research team whose names are detailed on the Press website.

E-BooksBetween Ethics and Aesthetics Crossing the Boundaries

Between Ethics and Aesthetics Crossing the Boundaries
Free Download Dorota Glowacka, Stephen Boos, "Between Ethics and Aesthetics: Crossing the Boundaries"
English | 2002 | ISBN: 0791451968, 079145195X | PDF | pages: 323 | 3.5 mb
This forum of current discussions of ethics and aesthetics addresses a cross-section of disciplines including literary theory, philosophy, women's studies, postcolonial theory, art history, Holocaust studies, theology, and others. Contributors, ranging from philosophers and literary critics to practicing artists and art curators, answer such questions as: In the age of the collapse of metaphysics, what is the relation between philosophical reflection and art? If we question the privilege accorded to the aesthetic, can ethics alone offer a solution to the crisis of representation? Is it possible and ethically viable to represent the other in speech and image? What happens at the conjunction of aesthetics and politics? Can one speak of aesthetic configurations of the space of community? Are the concepts of ethics and aesthetics gendered and repressive of sexual difference? Considering the many works that consider either ethics or aesthetics almost exclusively within the confines of particular disciplines, this collection crosses the boundaries and continues the debate outside the rigid parameters of specialized discourses.
