E-BooksThe Genealogy of Aesthetics

The Genealogy of Aesthetics
Ekbert Faas, "The Genealogy of Aesthetics"
English | 2002 | ISBN: 0521811821 | PDF | pages: 451 | 45.4 mb
Is it body or spirit that makes us appreciate beauty and create art? The distinguished Canadian critic Ekbert Faas argues that, with occasional exceptions like Montaigne and Mandeville, the mainstream of western thinking about beauty from Plato onwards has greatly overemphasized the spirit. This study redresses this imbalance, and offers a radical re-reading of thinkers like Plato, Augustine, Kant, Hegel, Heidegger and Derrida. Professor Faas attacks both the traditional and postmodern consensus, and offers a new pro-sensualist aesthetics, heavily influenced by Nietzsche, that draws on contemporary cognitive science.

E-BooksWorking Aesthetics Labour, Art and Capitalism

Working Aesthetics Labour, Art and Capitalism
Danielle Child, "Working Aesthetics: Labour, Art and Capitalism "
English | ISBN: 1350022381 | 2019 | 240 pages | PDF | 19 MB
Working Aesthetics is about the relationship between art and work under contemporary capitalism. Whilst labour used to be regarded as an unattractive subject for art, the proximity of work to everyday life has subsequently narrowed the gap between work and art. The artist is no longer considered apart from the economic, but is heralded as an example of how to work in neoliberal management textbooks. As work and life become obscured within the contemporary period, this book asks how artistic practice is affected, including those who labour for artists. Through a series of case studies,

E-BooksThe Philosophy of Mannerism From Aesthetics to Modal Metaphysics

The Philosophy of Mannerism From Aesthetics to Modal Metaphysics
The Philosophy of Mannerism
by van Tuinen, Sjoerd;

English | 2022 | ISBN: 1350322474 | 241 pages | True PDF | 9.99 MB
Sjoerd van Tuinen argues for the inseparability of matter and manner in the form of a group portrait of Leibniz, Bergson, Whitehead, Souriau, Simondon, Deleuze, Stengers, and Agamben. Examining afresh the 16th-century style of mannerism, this book synthesizes philosophy and aesthetics to demonstrate not only the contemporary relevance of artists such as Michelangelo or Arcimboldo but their broader significance as incorporating a form of modal thinking and perceiving.

E-BooksAdorno's Aesthetics of Music

Adorno's Aesthetics of Music
Adorno's Aesthetics of Music By Max Paddison
1998 | 392 Pages | ISBN: 0521626080 | PDF | 23 MB
The main aim of this book is to provide a conceptual context within which to situate Adorno's writings on music. It has quickly established itself as a classic text. Paddison surveys the early writings from the 1920s and examines Adorno's idiosyncratic reception of Marx and Freud. He then discusses Adorno's approach to analysis, and to the sociology of music, and his philosophy of history. The study closes with a critical assessment of Adorno's concept of musical material in the context of his best-known book Philosophy of New Music.

E-BooksBreathing Aesthetics

Breathing Aesthetics
Jean-Thomas Tremblay, "Breathing Aesthetics"
English | ISBN: 1478018860 | 2022 | 248 pages | PDF | 6 MB
In Breathing Aesthetics Jean-Thomas Tremblay argues that difficult breathing indexes the uneven distribution of risk in a contemporary era marked by the increasing contamination, weaponization, and monetization of air. Tremblay shows how biopolitical and necropolitical forces tied to the continuation of extractive capitalism, imperialism, and structural racism are embodied and experienced through respiration. They identify responses to the crisis in breathing in aesthetic practices ranging from the film work of Cuban American artist Ana Mendieta to the disability diaries of Bob Flanagan, to the Black queer speculative fiction of Renee Gladman. In readings of these and other minoritarian works of experimental film, endurance performance, ecopoetics, and cinema-vérité, Tremblay contends that articulations of survival now depend on the management and dispersal of respiratory hazards. In so doing, they reveal how an aesthetic attention to breathing generates historically, culturally, and environmentally situated tactics and strategies for living under precarity.
