E-BooksRevisiting Traditional Institutions in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills

Revisiting Traditional Institutions in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills
Charles Reuben Lyngdoh, "Revisiting Traditional Institutions in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills"
English | 2016 | ISBN: 1443899690 | PDF | pages: 238 | 1.2 mb
Traditional institutions in the Khasi-Jaintia society are living organisms which have existed for centuries and internally evolved from one phase to another. Despite having come into contact with newer and more modern forms of administration, they continue to exist, backed by local public opinion that has called for their continuity amidst diminishing responsibility and utility. This collection of papers explores the landscapes of traditional institutions that exist in the present Khasi and Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya, India. The chapters blend oral tradition with historical records and available sources from secondary literature. They examine the interplay of power and functions between the constitutional authorities, such as the state government, and the Autonomous District Councils and traditional authorities represented by the traditional institutions.

E-BooksTrade and Institutions in the Medieval Mediterranean The Geniza Merchants and their Business World

Trade and Institutions in the Medieval Mediterranean The Geniza Merchants and their Business World
Jessica L. Goldberg, "Trade and Institutions in the Medieval Mediterranean: The Geniza Merchants and their Business World "
English | ISBN: 1107005477 | 2012 | 450 pages | PDF | 8 MB
The Geniza merchants of the eleventh-century Mediterranean - sometimes called the 'Maghribi traders' - are central to controversies about the origins of long-term economic growth and the institutional bases of trade. In this book, Jessica Goldberg reconstructs the business world of the Geniza merchants, maps the shifting geographic relationships of the medieval Islamic economy and sheds new light on debates about the institutional framework for later European dominance. Commercial letters, business accounts and courtroom testimony bring to life how these medieval traders used personal gossip and legal mechanisms to manage far-flung agents, switched business strategies to manage political risks and asserted different parts of their fluid identities to gain advantage in the multicultural medieval trading world. This book paints a vivid picture of the everyday life of Jewish merchants in Islamic societies and adds new depth to debates about medieval trading institutions with unique quantitative analyses and innovative approaches.

Authoritarian Modernization in Russia Ideas, Institutions, and Policies
Vladimir Gel'man, "Authoritarian Modernization in Russia: Ideas, Institutions, and Policies "
English | ISBN: 1472465415 | 2016 | 214 pages | EPUB | 1085 KB
Post-Communist Russia is an instance of the phenomenon of authoritarian modernization project, which is perceived as a set of policies intended to achieve a high level of economic development, while political freedoms remain beyond the current modernization agenda or are postponed to a distant future. Why did Russia (unlike many countries of post-Communist Europe) pursue authoritarian modernization after the Soviet collapse? What is the ideational agenda behind this project and why does it dominate Russia's post-Communist political landscape? What are the mechanisms of political governance, which maintain this project and how have they adopted and absorbed various democratic institutions and practices? Why has this project brought such diverse results in various policy arenas, and why have the consequences of certain policies become so controversial? Why, despite so many controversies, shortcomings and flaws, has this project remained attractive in the eyes of a large proportion of the Russian elite and ordinary citizens? This volume intended to place some of these questions on the research agenda and propose several answers, encouraging further discussions about the logic and mechanisms of the authoritarian modernization project in post-Communist Russia and its effects on Russia's politics, economy, and society.

E-BooksNational Institutions - International Migration Labour Markets, Welfare States and Immigration Policy

National Institutions - International Migration Labour Markets, Welfare States and Immigration Policy
Frida Boräng, "National Institutions - International Migration: Labour Markets, Welfare States and Immigration Policy"
English | ISBN: 1786606674 | 2018 | 206 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Despite the fact that immigration policy is today one of the most salient political issues in the OECD countries, we know surprisingly little about the factors behind the very different choices countries have made over the last decades when it comes to immigrant admission. Why has the balance between inclusion and exclusion differed so much between countries - and for different categories of migrants? The answer that this book provides is that this is to an important extent a result of how domestic labour market and welfare state institutions have approached the question of inclusion and exclusion, since immigration policy does not stand independent from these central policy areas. By developing and testing an institutional explanation for immigrant admission, this book offers a theoretically informed, and empirically rich, analysis of variation in immigration policy in the OECD countries from the 1980s to the 2000s.

E-BooksElectoral Management Institutions and Practices in an Established Democracy The Case of Ireland

Electoral Management Institutions and Practices in an Established Democracy The Case of Ireland
Fiona Buckley, "Electoral Management: Institutions and Practices in an Established Democracy: The Case of Ireland"
English | ISBN: 0367023954 | 2018 | 210 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Over the last three decades, electoral reform has moved centre stage in both new and established democracies. In Europe, the post 1989 democratisation wave brought important debates about electoral system choice and free and fair elections. But electoral reform also emerged on the agenda in a number of established democracies. Declining political participation, corruption scandals and party finance irregularities put the management of the democratic process on the political agenda. Election administration problems such as those in the Gore Bush election of 2000 thrust electoral integrity into the global political spotlight. In this edited collection, we are primarily concerned with the mechanics of how elections are run. Elections are complex administrative tasks and as International IDEA points out, they are also usually administered against a politically charged backdrop. This book brings together specialists to consider the election management process using diverse theoretical approaches and, addressing both emerging and perennial election debates such as the role of voter advice applications, election management bodies, districting, ballot design and media practices in the coverage of elections. The volume includes a number of comparative chapters which utilise data from large international datasets (VDem and CSES), several Irish case studies and an important Dutch study of voter advice applications with pioneering data. Collectively, the chapters provide insights into election administration in Ireland and many other established democracies. This book was previously published as a special issue of
