The 2017 Home Capital saga represents the shortcomings of a financial system challenged by distinct, siloed regulatory frameworks that fail to communicate with each other. Home Capital is a publicly traded company that acts as a lender through the Home Trust Company, most often providing mortgages to clients rejected by traditional banks. Home Capital's 2017 announcement that it required $2 billion to sustain a $600 million loss shook customer confidence, and fueled by allegations of corruption, they suffered a rapid decline in stock price.

E-BooksColonial Institutions and Civil War Indirect Rule and Maoist Insurgency in India

Colonial Institutions and Civil War Indirect Rule and Maoist Insurgency in India
Shivaji Mukherjee, "Colonial Institutions and Civil War: Indirect Rule and Maoist Insurgency in India "
English | ISBN: 1108844995 | 2021 | 300 pages | PDF | 12 MB
What explains the peculiar spatial variation of Maoist insurgency in India? Mukherjee develops a novel typology of colonial indirect rule and land tenure in India, showing how they can lead to land inequality, weak state and Maoist insurgency. Using a multi-method research design that combines qualitative analysis of archival data on Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh states, Mukherjee demonstrates path dependence of land/ethnic inequality leading to Maoist insurgency. This is nested within a quantitative analysis of a district level dataset which uses an instrumental variable analysis to address potential selection bias in colonial choice of princely states. The author also analyses various Maoist documents, and interviews with key human rights activists, police officers, and bureaucrats, providing rich contextual understanding of the motivations of agents. Furthermore, he demonstrates the generalizability of his theory to cases of colonial frontier indirect rule causing ethnic secessionist insurgency in Burma, and the Taliban insurgency in Pakistan.

E-BooksGoverning Locally Institutions, Policies and Implementation in Indian Cities

Governing Locally Institutions, Policies and Implementation in Indian Cities
Governing Locally: Institutions, Policies and Implementation in Indian Cities by Suraj Jacob, Babu Jacob
2021 | ISBN: 1108832342 | English | 250 pages | PDF | 4 MB
India and other countries chose a decentralised mode of delivering public services through elected local governments for increasing public welfare. However, great expectations of effective services increased accountability and people's participation were widely belied in practice. Based on field research in Gujarat, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, the book is a detailed examination of how state and local governments function and why decentralisation outcomes vary considerably. It locates the primary reason in governance practices that compromised autonomy and capacity of local governments. The book demonstrates that despite a constitutional mandate for decentralised governance, policy implementation got derailed in processes threading through laws, rules, and administrative actions. It shows how habitual practices create hidden institutional rigidities that thwart policy moves despite good intentions and democratic legitimacy. The book also discusses how to navigate policy to skirt hidden threats to successful implementation.

E-BooksPower and Communication Media, Politics and Institutions in Times of Crisis

Power and Communication Media, Politics and Institutions in Times of Crisis
Silvia Leonzi, "Power and Communication: Media, Politics and Institutions in Times of Crisis"
English | ISBN: 1443876208 | 2015 | 160 pages | PDF | 914 KB
This book represents a significant contribution to the discussion on the part played by communication, especially in its mediated forms, in peoples lives, dwelling on the nature of the relationship between the notion of power and the media in current Western societies. The media have dramatically increased their capacity to exercise their symbolic force over other fields of cultural production, by partly structuring those intrinsic rules, values, and practices that organize, for example, the political system or the academic world from the inside. On the other hand, the media are intertwined environments subjected to the influence of other cultural, economic, and political forces, which, in turn, reveal themselves to be capable of framing reality through the media themselves. Particularly focusing on the topic of the economic crisis, the various chapters of this edited volume highlight how the relationship between the media and other forces capable of pervasively exercising their power appears to be, paradoxically, as strict as it is opaque. Social media and smart mobile technologies have increasingly affected the modalities whereby other institutions and organizations reflect on themselves and develop their worldviews. At the same time, however, politics and economics experts and strategists have all learned how to exploit this potential for their own purposes. Detecting the opacity that characterizes this form of exploitation is the first step in the acknowledgment of this phenomenon.
