E-BooksSufferers and Healers The Experience of Illness in Seventeenth-Century England

Sufferers and Healers The Experience of Illness in Seventeenth-Century England
Sufferers and Healers: The Experience of Illness in Seventeenth-Century England By Lucinda McCray Beier
2015 | 326 Pages | ISBN: 113818263X | PDF | 30 MB
Lucinda McCray Beier's remarkable book, first published in 1987, enters the world of illness in seventeenth-century England, exploring what it was like to be either a sufferer or a healer. A wide spectrum of healers existed, ranging between the housewife, with her simple herbal preparations, local cunning-folk and bonestters, travelling healers, and formally accredited surgeons and physicians. Basing her study upon personal accounts written by sufferers and healers, Beier examines the range of healers and therapies available, describes the disorders people suffered from, and indicates the various ways sufferers dealt with their ailments. She includes several case-studies of healers and sufferers, and looks in detail at the ways in which women's identities and duties were associated with childbirth, illness and healing. This title will be of interest to students of history.

E-BooksWorking Bodies Chronic Illness in the Canadian Workplace

Working Bodies Chronic Illness in the Canadian Workplace
Working Bodies: Chronic Illness in the Canadian Workplace By Sharon-Dale Stone, Valorie A. Crooks, Michelle Owen
2014 | 240 Pages | ISBN: 0773543775 | PDF | 2 MB
While significant research has been produced in the field of disability studies, little attention has been paid to experiences of chronic illness. Working Bodies emphasizes the workplace as an important site for understanding such experiences, as employment status has an enormous impact on social and economic standing in Canadian society. The essays in this collection examine the perspectives of both workers and employers, painting a disturbing picture of the challenges that people with chronic illness face in an already demanding labour market. The focus on the Canadian workplace allows for an in-depth understanding of this context and for meaningful comparisons between populations and across workplace environments. Contributors include scholars and practitioners in disability studies, health sciences, geography, occupational therapy, sociology, and labour relations, their expert knowledge ranging from the imperatives of employers, to lived experiences of chronic illness, to the application of workplace policy. By combining research-based chapters with personal reflections on work and chronic illness, Working Bodies grounds itself in existing scholarship while opening up new avenues of discussion. Contributors include Terri Aversa, Andrea Black, Keri Cameron (McMaster University), Nicolette Carlan (University of Waterloo), Vera Chouinard (McMaster University), Valorie A, Crooks (Simon Fraser University), Julie Devaney, Le-Ann Dolan, Adam Gilgoff, Nancy Hutchinson (Queen's University), Vicki Kristman (Lakehead University), Terry Krupa (Queen's University), Rosemary Lysaght (Queen's University), Margaret Oldfield (University of Toronto), Michelle Owen (University of Winnipeg), Melissa Popiel, Wendy Porch, William S. Shaw (University of Massachusetts), Corinne Stevens, Iffath Syed (York University), Joan Versnel (Dalhousie University), and Kelly Williams-Whitt (University of Lethbridge).

E-BooksUnderstanding the Stigma of Mental Illness Theory and Interventions

Understanding the Stigma of Mental Illness Theory and Interventions
Understanding the Stigma of Mental Illness: Theory and Interventions By
2008 | 215 Pages | ISBN: 0470723289 | PDF | 4 MB
Many mentally ill people are the victims of stigma, which leads to additional suffering and humiliation. Negative stereotypes and prejudicial attitudes against them are often reinforced by their media representation as unpredictable, violent and dangerous. Hence the importance of the study of stigma as an explanatory construct of much that transpires in the management of the mentally ill in our societies. This book describes the experience of stigmatization at the level of the individual, and seeks to measure stigma and discrimination from the following perspectives: Self imposed stigma due to shame, guilt and low self esteem; Socially imposed stigma due to social stereotyping and prejudice; and Structurally imposed stigma, caused by policies, practices, and laws that discriminate against the mentally ill. This book briefly describes programmes that aim to reduce such stigma then looks at ways to evaluate their effectiveness. It is the first book to focus on evaluation and research methodologies in stigma and mental health. It also: * presents new interventions to reduce stigma * describes the various international programmes which help reduce stigma * discusses the use of the internet as an international tool to promote awareness of stigma in mental health. Understanding the Stigma of Mental Illness is essential reading for clinicians and researchers who wish to apply or develop stigma reduction programmes.
