E-BooksMetaphors of Mental Illness in Graphic Medicine

Metaphors of Mental Illness in Graphic Medicine
Metaphors of Mental Illness in Graphic Medicine By Sweetha Saji, Sathyaraj Venkatesan
2021 | 160 Pages | ISBN: 1032102098 | PDF | 5 MB
This book investigates how graphic medicine enables sufferers of mental illness to visualize the intricacies of their internal mindscape through visual metaphors and reclaim their voice amidst stereotyped and prejudiced assumptions of mental illness as a disease of deviance and violence. In this context, by using Lakoff and Johnson's conceptual metaphor theory (CMT), this study uncovers the broad spectrum of the mentally ills' experiences, a relatively undertheorised area in medical humanities. The aim is to demonstrate that the mentally ill are often represented as either grotesquely exaggerated or overly romanticised across diverse media and biomedical discourses. Further, they have been disparaged as emotionally drained and unreasonable individuals, incapable of active social engagements and against the healthy/sane society. The study aims to unsettle the sanity/insanity binary and its related patterns of fixed categories of normal/abnormal, which depersonalise the mentally ill by critically analysing seven graphic narratives on mental illness.

E-BooksMalady and Mortality Illness, Disease and Death in Literary and Visual Culture

Malady and Mortality Illness, Disease and Death in Literary and Visual Culture
Helen Thomas, "Malady and Mortality: Illness, Disease and Death in Literary and Visual Culture"
English | 2016 | pages: 350 | ISBN: 1443890103 | PDF | 5,5 mb
This ground-breaking study examines visual and literary responses to, and representations of, illness, dying and death from the perspective of the chronically ill, their families and carers, medics, artists, photographers, authors, and academics. It encourages a re-examination of cultural taboos and visual and literary practices that engage with illness and death. Focusing upon a wide range of creative and critical engagements, this book makes a significant contribution to the medical humanities via its exploration of medical practice, literature and film, digital media studies, graphic design, and both contemporary and historical attitudes towards illness, death (including infant mortality), mourning and bereavement. For some, the experience of illness provokes feelings of exile, crisis or social critique, whilst for others it instigates utopian discourses predicated upon personal reflection, communication or connectivity, wherein the self is redefined beyond the parameters and constraints of the body.

Advocate for teens experiencing mental health issues and for their friends and families. As a teen librarian, you are more likely than not to encounter teens with mental health issues. Will you know how to help them? This guide explains what to do and what not to do. Mental illness among teens has risen to epidemic levels. When mental health issues come to the library, what is the librarian's role? This book asserts that you don't have to be a social worker or mental health professional to provide guidance to teens with mental health issues. By creating collections that contain mental health resources, working with community partners, and initiating dialogues with library patrons that de-stigmatize mental illness, you can serve a positive and proactive role in helping teens to get help. This book provides readers with practical guidelines for building collections, programs, and services that support teens experiencing mental health challenges and explains how to create a supportive, welcoming environment in the library. In addition, it shows how to forge partnerships with other community agencies in this endeavor, how to advocate for mentally ill teens, and how to teach them to advocate for themselves. Lastly, it discusses how to evaluate these programs and services, and how to take care of your own needs while serving others.
