E-BooksPedagogy in Higher Education A Cultural Historical Approach

Pedagogy in Higher Education A Cultural Historical Approach
Gordon Wells, "Pedagogy in Higher Education: A Cultural Historical Approach"
English | ISBN: 1107014654 | 2013 | 261 pages | PDF | 2 MB
What can Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) contribute to the solution of the problems facing higher education today? This edited volume brings together the work of an international group of scholars and researchers to address this important question. Drawing on contemporary interpretations of CHAT, the contributors take on a wide range of issues, ranging from pedagogy to administration and from teacher preparation to university outreach. An introduction presents the key principles of CHAT. Subsequent chapters address such issues as effective ways of teaching large undergraduate classes, providing support for struggling writers or for students with disabilities, opening up opportunities for students from historically underserved communities, preparing students for the professions, and building bridges between higher education and the wider community. Readers with an interest in higher education will encounter ideas in these chapters that will prompt them to rethink their role in preparing today's students for tomorrow's challenges.

E-BooksHistorical Dictionary of the Bedouins

Historical Dictionary of the Bedouins
Muhammad Suwaed, "Historical Dictionary of the Bedouins "
English | ISBN: 1442254505 | 2015 | 304 pages | PDF | 3 MB
The term 'Bedouins' was given to nomads who came from or lived in the desert, and consisted of a sedentary population (from the badia - desert). However, in time, it came to define their social economic essence as: people who raised grazing animals and were compelled to conduct a nomadic life, to live in tents that could be dismantled, carried, and re-erected easily, and to move with their livelihood and living accommodation, according to the environmental conditions - those which provided water and grass. Not all Bedouin tribes are of Arabic origin, as all Muslim nomadic groups in the area adopted the term "Bedouins." There are Bedouin tribes of Turkmen, Kurdish Baluch, and Berberic origin and there are "Arabized" African people and hybrid people, who are categorized as Bedouins.

E-BooksPrussia in the Historical Culture of the German Democratic Republic Communists and Kings

Prussia in the Historical Culture of the German Democratic Republic Communists and Kings
Prussia in the Historical Culture of the German Democratic Republic: Communists and Kings (Studies in German History) by Marcus Colla
English | September 8, 2022 | ISBN: 0192865900 | True EPUB/PDF | 336 pages | 2.97/3.6 MB
No example demonstrates the fluidity of the past within the German Democratic Republic more powerfully than the history of the Prussian state. Initially attacked in East German official histories as the historical engine of German militarism and reaction, Prussia underwent a remarkable transformation in official and public memory from around the end of the 1970s. This was the so-called 'Prussia-Renaissance', in which, for the first time, the East German state began to recognise and even celebrate figures from Prussian history who had not served a 'progressive' agenda. But the 'Prussia-Renaissance' was also a political and cultural phenomenon with a wide public resonance. The 'Prussia-Renaissance' may have been a relatively short-lived phenomenon, but it evidently opened a deep vein in the historical memory of the German Democratic Republic that defied reduction to 'high politics' alone. This book asks why.

E-BooksUtopias and Utopians An Historical Dictionary of Attempts to Make the World a Better Place and Those Who Were Involved

Utopias and Utopians An Historical Dictionary of Attempts to Make the World a Better Place and Those Who Were Involved
Richard C.S. Trahair, "Utopias and Utopians: An Historical Dictionary of Attempts to Make the World a Better Place and Those Who Were Involved"
English | 1998 | pages: 496 | ISBN: 1579581641 | PDF | 11,8 mb
Utopian ventures are worth close attention, to help us understand why some succeed and others fail, for they offer hope for an improved life on earth. Utopias and Utopians is a comprehensive guide to utopian communities and their founders. Some works look at literary utopias or political utopias, etc., and others examine the utopias of only one country: this work examines utopias from antiquity to the present and surveys utopian efforts around the world. Of more than 600 alphabetically arranged entries roughly half are descriptions of utopian ventures; the other half are biographies of those who were involved. Entries are followed by a list of sources and a general bibliography concludes the volume.

E-BooksThe Challenges of Cultural Psychology Historical Legacies and Future Responsibilities

The Challenges of Cultural Psychology Historical Legacies and Future Responsibilities
The Challenges of Cultural Psychology: Historical Legacies and Future Responsibilities By Gordana Jovanović (editor), Lars Allolio-Näcke (editor), Carl Ratner (editor)
2018 | 458 Pages | ISBN: 1138677213 | PDF | 11 MB
This book considers cultural psychology from historical, theoretical, and epistemological perspectives, building an understanding of cultural psychology as a human science and moving beyond the nature-culture dichotomy. The unique collection of chapters seeks to advance the field of cultural psychology by reviving its historical legacies and arguing for its social responsibility in future historical developments. It considers European legacies for cultural psychology as developed by leading figures such as Giambattista Vico, Wilhelm Wundt, Wilhelm Dilthey, and Ernst Cassirer in order to provide insights into a long tradition of thinking from a cultural psychology perspective. The book discusses historical pathways in the rise and repression of cultural psychology and its different historical forms, arguing for the necessity of decolonizing psychology, securing a place for culture in it, and developing an epistemology suited to humankind's meaning-making processes in mutual shaping of psyche and culture. It provides an integrative and historical understanding of the subject and uses the diversity and heterogeneity within the field to offer critical reflections on its achievements. The thoroughly international group of contributors brings diverse analyses of self, body, emotions, culture, and society and considers the future of cultural psychology. The volume is a stimulating read for scholars and students of cultural and theoretical psychology and related areas including philosophy, anthropology, and history.

English | 2018 | ISBN: 0231178743, 0231178751 | PDF | pages: 522 | 6.1 mb
A case study in the textual architecture of the venerable legal and ethical tradition at the center of the Islamic experience, Sharīʿa Scripts is a work of historical anthropology focused on Yemen in the early twentieth century. There―while colonial regimes, late Ottoman reformers, and early nationalists wrought decisive changes to the legal status of the sharīʿa, significantly narrowing its sphere of relevance―the Zaydī school of jurisprudence, rooted in highland Yemen for a millennium, still held sway.

E-BooksRedress for Historical Injustices in the United States On Reparations for Slavery, Jim Crow, and Their Legacies

Redress for Historical Injustices in the United States On Reparations for Slavery, Jim Crow, and Their Legacies
Michael T. Martin, Marilyn Yaquinto, "Redress for Historical Injustices in the United States: On Reparations for Slavery, Jim Crow, and Their Legacies"
English | 2007 | ISBN: 0822340240, 0822340054 | PDF | pages: 754 | 7.8 mb
An exceptional resource, this comprehensive reader brings together primary and secondary documents related to efforts to redress historical wrongs against African Americans. These varied efforts are often grouped together under the rubric "reparations movement," and they are united in their goal of "repairing" the injustices that have followed from the long history of slavery and Jim Crow. Yet, as this collection reveals, there is a broad range of opinions as to the form that repair might take. Some advocates of redress call for apologies; others for official acknowledgment of wrongdoing; and still others for more tangible reparations: monetary compensation, government investment in disenfranchised communities, the restitution of lost property and rights, and repatriation.
