The Liberating Philosophy of Ignacio Ellacuría Historical Reality, Humanism, and Praxis

English | ISBN: 1666925616 | 2024 | 306 pages | EPUB, PDF | 1146 KB + 2 MB
The Liberating Philosophy of Ignacio Ellacuría: Historical Reality, Humanism, and Praxis is the first systematic work on the philosophy of Ignacio Ellacuría to be published in English so far. The Spaniard-Salvadorian philosopher-murdered in Salvador in 1989 by the military-maintains that philosophy is a permanent task grounded in metaphysics as first philosophy, as developed within a historical reality and a preferential option for the poor. As explored by this collection edited by Luis Arturo Martínez Vásquez, Randall Carrera Umaña, and Luis Rubén Díaz Cepeda, Ellacuría's theory is a critical and practical proposal immersed in the colonial history of Central America, but its explanatory and normative power extends to oppressed people all around the world. The contributors to this volume, coming from Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Salvador, and Costa Rica, analyze Ellacuría's philosophy of liberation in conjunction with radical realism and strength, describing it as "a philosophy created by people concerned with the problems and history of our land-such as our colonial past, systemic poverty and dependency-and... responding to these concerns can offer alternatives for a true liberation of all the dominated peoples of the world."

E-BooksStudies on Authorship in Historical Keyboard Music

Studies on Authorship in Historical Keyboard Music
Free Download Andrew Woolley, "Studies on Authorship in Historical Keyboard Music "
English | ISBN: 1032168110 | 2023 | 222 pages | EPUB, PDF | 17 MB + 23 MB
Authorship is a pertinent issue for historical musicology and musicians more widely, and some controversies concerned with major figures have even reached wider consciousness. Scholars have clarified some of the issues at stake in recent decades, such as the places of borrowing and arranging in the creative process and the wider cultural significance of these practices. The discovery of new sources and methodologies has also opened up opportunities for reassessing specific authorship problems. Drawing upon this wider musicological literature as well as insights from other disciplines, such as intellectual history and book history, this book aims to build on what has already been achieved by focussing on keyboard music. The nine chapters cover case studies of authorship problems, the socioeconomic conditions of music publishing, the contributions of composers, arrangers, copyists and music ✅Publishers in creating notated keyboard compositions, the functions of attribution and ascription, and how the contexts in which notated pieces were used affected concepts of authorship at different times and places.

E-BooksScripture and Theology Historical and Systematic Perspectives

Scripture and Theology Historical and Systematic Perspectives
Free Download Tomas Bokedal, "Scripture and Theology: Historical and Systematic Perspectives "
English | ISBN: 3110768267 | 2023 | 497 pages | PDF | 5 MB
The academic disciplines of Biblical Studies and Systematic Theology were long closely linked to one another. However, in the modern period they became gradually separated which led to increasing subject specialization, but also to a lamentable lacuna within the various branches of Divinity. As the lack of dialogue between Biblical Studies and the various theological disciplines increased, a minority-group of scholars in the past few decades reacted and sought to re-establish the time-honoured bonds between the disciplines. The present volume is part of this intellectual response, with contributions from scholars of various professional and denominational backgrounds. Together, the book's 25 chapters seek to reinvigorate the crucial cross-disciplinary dialogue, involving biblical, narrative, historical, systematic-theological and philosophic-theological perspectives. The book opens the horizon to contemporary research, and fills a lamentable research gap with a number of fresh contributions from scholars in the respective sub-disciplines

E-BooksMethods in Historical Corpus Pragmatics

Methods in Historical Corpus Pragmatics
Free Download Methods in Historical Corpus Pragmatics: Epistemic Stance in Early Modern English
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1009237411 | 331 Pages | PDF | 3 MB
Based on an extensive corpus-based study, this revealing book explores how epistemic stance is expressed in the early modern period, and in doing so, presents new methodologies for using corpora to investigate issues in historical pragmatics. It provides a new, corpus-driven method for the analysis of pragmatic functions that rely on context-dependent interpretations. By retrieving passages that include a high-density of the pragmatic function under investigation, the subsequent analysis can reveal previously neglected forms and context-dependent factors. It includes four empirical studies that apply the method to the analysis of epistemic stance in four Early Modern English corpora, the result of which emphasise the importance of context for the expression of stance. It also includes an appendix with inventories of Early Modern English stance expressions, offering starting points for further research studies. It is essential reading for researchers and students in historical pragmatics and corpus pragmatics.

Historical Dictionary of the Crusades (Historical Dictionaries of War, Revolution, and Civil Unrest)
Free Download Historical Dictionary of the Crusades (Historical Dictionaries of War, Revolution, and Civil Unrest) by Corliss K. Slack
English | May 9, 2013 | ISBN: 0810878305 | 412 pages | MOBI | 1.26 Mb
The crusades were among the longest and most bitter wars in human history and consisted of no less than seven major expeditions from Western Europe from the late 11th to the early 14th centuries for the purpose of wresting Jerusalem and the Holy Land from the control of the Muslims. In the end, it was the Muslims who won, and the Christians who suffered a major setback, and the Middle East remained firmly in Muslim hands. This was one of the worst clashes between different religions and civilizations and, for long, it was largely forgotten or brushed over. That is no longer the case, with many Muslims regarding Western interference in the region as a repeat of the crusades while launching their own jihads. So, while an old conflict, it is still with us today.

English | 2009 | pages: 279 | ISBN: 9400779984, 9048128277 | PDF | 7,8 mb
Climatologists with an eye on the past have any number of sources for their work, from personal diaries to weather station reports. Piecing together the trajectory of a weather event can thus be a painstaking process taking years and involving real detective work. Missing pieces of a climate puzzle can come from very far afield, often in unlikely places. In this book, a series of case studies examine specific regions across North America, using instrumental and documentary data from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Extreme weather events such as the Sitka hurricane of 1880 are recounted in detail, while the chapters also cover more widespread phenomena such as the collapse of the Low Country rice culture. The book also looks at the role of weather station histories in complementing the instrumental record, and sets out the methods that involve early instrumental and documentary climate data. Finally, the book's focus on North America reflects the fact that the historical climate community there has only grown relatively recently. Up to now, most such studies have focused on Europe and Asia.

English | ISBN: 3031464559 | 2024 | 317 pages | EPUB, PDF | 597 KB + 6 MB
This volume explores the experiences of those with little or no power―usually, although not exclusively, animals. The theme of animals as experiencing entities is what links the chapters and characterises the volume. Broadly each author in this volume contributes in one of two ways. The first group, in Section 1, theoretically engages animal subjectivity, animal experiences, and ways in which these are to some extent accessible and knowable to humans. The second group of authors, in Section 2, offer narrative accounts about specific animals or groups of animals and explore to some extent their subjective historical experiences. In summary, the first section diversely theorises about animal experiences, while the second section's authors assume animals' subjective experiences and construct narratives that take into account how animals might have subjectively experienced historical phenomena.

E-BooksUnderstanding the Diaconate Historical, Theological, and Sociological Foundati

Understanding the Diaconate Historical, Theological, and Sociological Foundati
Free Download Understanding the Diaconate: Historical, Theological, and Sociological Foundati By W. Shawn McKnight, David W. Fagerberg (Foreword)
2018 | 329 Pages | ISBN: 0813230357 | PDF | 2 MB
What is a deacon? More than fiftyyears since the restoration of the permanent diaconate by the Second VaticanCouncil, the office of deacon is still in need of greater specificity about itspurpose and place within the mission and organizational structure of theChurch. While the Church is more than asocial reality, the Church nonetheless has a social reality. Our understandingof the diaconate therefore benefits from a theological discussion of the divineelement of the Church and a sociological examination of the humanelement. Understanding the Diaconate adds the resources ofsociology and anthropology to the theological sources of scripture, liturgy, patristic era texts, theologians, and magisterial teachings to conclude thatthe deacon can be understood as "social intermediary and symbol of communities"who serves the participation of the laity in the life and mission of theChurch. This research proposes the deacon as a servant of the bond of communionwithin the Church (facilitating the relationship between the bishop/priest andhis people), and between the People of God and the individual in need. Thusauthentic diaconal ministry includes a vast array of many concrete contexts ofpastoral importance where one does more than simply serve at Mass. Understanding the Diaconatewill undoubtedly be useful in the formation of permanent deacon candidates. Butby shedding light on the unique ministry of deacons, the book also reveals howevery member of the Church can be better supported and understood. Transitionaldeacons will come to understand the service-identity that lays the foundationfor their future presbyteral character; the laity will appreciate their ownvocational call in the world when they find a cleric accompanying them into thetemporal sphere; the bishop will have the means to extend and enhance his carefor his flock; and a world that is sick unto death will find the Church'shealing arm reaching out to it in word, liturgy, and charity. In these ways, W.Shawn McKnight makes clear the uniqueness of the deacon. *David W. Fagerberg is a Professor in the Department of Theologyat the University of Notre Dame. He holds masters degrees from LutherNorthwestern Seminary, St. John's University (Collegeville), Yale DivinitySchool, and Yale University. His Ph.D. is from Yale University in liturgicaltheology

E-BooksThinking about Harmony Historical Perspectives on Analysis

Thinking about Harmony Historical Perspectives on Analysis
Free Download David Damschroder, "Thinking about Harmony: Historical Perspectives on Analysis"
English | 2008 | pages: 342 | ISBN: 052188814X, 0521182387 | PDF | 38,4 mb
Focusing on music written in the period 1800-1850, Thinking about Harmony traces the responses of observant musicians to the music that was being created in their midst by composers including Beethoven, Schubert, and Chopin. It tells the story of how a separate branch of musical activity - music analysis - evolved out of the desire to make sense of the music, essential both to its enlightened performance and to its appreciation. The book integrates two distinct areas of musical inquiry - the history of music theory and music analysis - and the various notions that shape harmonic theory are put to the test through practical application, creating a unique and intriguing synthesis. Aided by an extensive compilation of carefully selected and clearly annotated music examples, readers can explore a panoramic projection of the era's analytical responses to harmony, thereby developing a more intimate rapport with the period.
