E-BooksImperial Inequalities The politics of economic governance across European empires

Imperial Inequalities The politics of economic governance across European empires
Gurminder Bhambra, "Imperial Inequalities: The politics of economic governance across European empires "
English | ISBN: 1526166143 | 2022 | 352 pages | PDF | 22 MB
Imperial Inequalities takes Western European empires and their legacies as the explicit starting point for discussion of issues of taxation and welfare. In doing so, it addresses the institutional and fiscal processes involved in modes of extraction, taxation, and the hierarchies of welfare distribution across Europe's global empires. The idea of 'imperial inequalities' provides a conceptual frame for thinking about the long-standing colonial histories that are responsible, at least in part, for the shape of present inequalities.

E-BooksThe Governance Cycle in Parliamentary Democracies

The Governance Cycle in Parliamentary Democracies
The Governance Cycle in Parliamentary Democracies: A Computational Social Science Approach
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1009315471 | 228 Pages | PDF | 2 MB
Parliamentary democracy involves a never-ending cycle of elections, government formations, and the need for governments to survive in potentially hostile environments. These conditions require members of any government to make decisions on a large number of issues, some of which sharply divide them. Officials resolve these divisions by 'logrolling'- conceding on issues they care less about, in exchange for reciprocal concessions on issues to which they attach more importance. Though realistically modeling this 'governance cycle' is beyond the scope of traditional formal analysis, this book attacks the problem computationally in two ways. Firstly, it models the behavior of "functionally rational" senior politicians who use informal decision heuristics to navigate their complex high stakes setting. Secondly, by applying computational methods to traditional game theory, it uses artificial intelligence to model how hyper-rational politicians might find strategies that are close to optimal.

Governance and Performance Management in Public Universities: Current Research and Practice
English | 2022 | ISBN: 3030856976 | 386 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 4 MB
This edited volume contributes to the ongoing research and practice on applying performance management to university governance. A comparative approach and international perspective of the issue is provided through extensive use of case studies and empirical findings. A specific focus is also placed on using performance governance applied to higher education institutions' Third Mission, and on enhancing decision makers' ability to frame dynamic complexity. In this regard, specific attention is devoted to analyzing the cause-and-effect relationships in affecting public outcomes. This also includes managing trade-offs in both time and space, and detecting and counteracting unintended behavioral effects from the use of formal systems focused on quantitative measures for performance assessment.

E-BooksChina in Global Governance of Intellectual Property

China in Global Governance of Intellectual Property
China in Global Governance of Intellectual Property: Implications for Global Distributive Justice
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031243692 | 438 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 8 MB
This book analyses how China has engaged in global IP governance and the implications of its engagement for global distributive justice. It investigates five cases on China's IP engagement in geographical indications, the disclosure obligation, IP and standardisation, and its bilateral and multilateral IP engagement. It takes a regulation-oriented approach to examine substate and non-state actors involved in China's global IP engagement, identifies principles that have guided or constrained its engagement, and discusses strategies actors have used in managing the principles. Its focus on engagement directs attention to processes instead of outcomes, which enables a more nuanced understanding of the role that China plays in global IP governance than the dichotomic categorisation of China either as a global IP rule-taker or rule-maker.

E-BooksTrade Governance In The Digital Age World Trade Forum

Trade Governance In The Digital Age World Trade Forum
Trade Governance In The Digital Age: World Trade Forum By Mira Burri, Thomas Cottier
2012 | 502 Pages | ISBN: 1107022436 | PDF | 5 MB
The development of new digital technologies has resulted in significant transformations in daily life, from the arrival of online shopping to more fundamental changes in the ways we work and communicate. Many of these changes raise questions that transcend market access and liberalisation, and demand cooperation and coherent regulatory design. International trade regulation has hitherto not reacted in a forward-looking manner to the digital revolution and, particularly at the multilateral level, legal engineering has yielded few tangible results. This book examines whether WTO laws possess the necessary flexibility and resilience to accommodate the changes brought about by burgeoning digital trade. By revealing both the potential and the limitations of the WTO framework, it provides a broad picture of the interaction between digital technologies and trade regulation, links the often disconnected discourses of international trade law, intellectual property and cyberlaw and explores discrete problems in different domains of global trade regulation.

E-BooksNeoliberal Urban Governance

Neoliberal Urban Governance
Neoliberal Urban Governance: Spaces, Culture and Discourses in Buenos Aires and Chicago
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031217179 | 293 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 17 MB
This book examines the dynamics of neoliberal urban governance through a comparative analysis of Buenos Aires and Chicago, with a special focus on gentrification processes in both cities from 2011 to 2021. This work argues that neoliberal principles, rationales and institutions, along with the elaborate rhetoric that has contributed to their success, are forever present in the US and Latin American region, particularly in global cities like Buenos Aires and Chicago. The year of 2011 marks the (almost) simultaneous election of new executive authorities in each city, and finalizes in 2021-a sufficient time span to observe key patterns, narratives and developments of each neoliberal urban governance.
