International Economics, Globalization, and Policy A Reader (McGraw-Hill Economics)
Free Download International Economics, Globalization, and Policy: A Reader (McGraw-Hill Economics) By Philip King, Sharmila King
2008 | 396 Pages | ISBN: 0073375810 | PDF | 12 MB
The King reader is a collection of articles on international economics by leading economists drawn from various scholarly sources (e.g., Foreign Affairs, Current Issues in Economics and Finance, Finance and Development, Federal Reserve Publications, the Journal of Economic Perspectives). Previously known as International Economics and International Economic Policy, the new title is briefer and yet more descriptive, since the term globalization has been added to reflect the content of the book, which is also used in courses devoted to globalization, particularly the economic aspects of globalization. The Fifth Edition focuses on real debates within the discipline of economics and political economy, not on phony "pro-cons" debates which often obscure the real issues. The reader continues to be unique as the most relevant in today's market.

E-BooksModern Blackness Nationalism, Globalization, and the Politics of Culture in Jamaica

Modern Blackness Nationalism, Globalization, and the Politics of Culture in Jamaica
Modern Blackness: Nationalism, Globalization, and the Politics of Culture in Jamaica By Deborah A. Thomas
2004 | 376 Pages | ISBN: 0822334089 | PDF | 2 MB
Modern Blackness is a rich ethnographic exploration of Jamaican identity in the late twentieth century and early twenty-first. Analyzing nationalism, popular culture, and political economy in relation to one another, Deborah A. Thomas illuminates an ongoing struggle in Jamaica between the values associated with the postcolonial state and those generated in and through popular culture. Following independence in 1962, cultural and political policies in Jamaica were geared toward the development of a multiracial creole nationalism reflected in the country's motto: "Out of many, one people." As Thomas shows, by the late 1990s, creole nationalism was superseded by "modern blackness"-an urban blackness rooted in youth culture and influenced by African American popular culture. Expressions of blackness that had been marginalized in national cultural policy became paramount in contemporary understandings of what it was to be Jamaican.Thomas combines historical research with fieldwork she conducted in Jamaica between 1993 and 2003. Drawing on her research in a rural hillside community just outside Kingston, she looks at how Jamaicans interpreted and reproduced or transformed on the local level nationalist policies and popular ideologies about progress. With detailed descriptions of daily life in Jamaica set against a backdrop of postcolonial nation-building and neoliberal globalization, Modern Blackness is an important examination of the competing identities that mobilize Jamaicans locally and represent them internationally.

Thiago Aguiar, "The Shifting Ground of Globalization: Labor and Mineral Extraction at Vale S.A. "
English | ISBN: 9004531939 | 2023 | 324 pages | PDF | 3 MB
The Shifting Ground of Globalization: Labor and Mineral Extraction at Vale S.A. describes the transformation of the formerly state-owned Brazilian mining company into a Transnational Corporation, global leader in iron ore and nickel extraction. Through ethnographic research in Brazil and Canada, in places as different as Carajás, in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, and Sudbury, in northern Ontario, Thiago Aguiar dialogues with the theories of global capitalism and takes the case of the largest Latin American company as a telling example of the integration of the Brazilian economy into capitalist globalization and its consequences for workers, communities, and the environment in the first decades of the twenty-first century - when many celebrated the BRICS as an alternative to neoliberal globalization.

E-BooksThe Globalization of International Law

The Globalization of International Law
The Globalization of International Law By Paul Schiff Berman (editor)
2005 | 698 Pages | ISBN: 0754624129 | PDF | 46 MB
'International law' is no longer a sufficient rubric to describe the complexities of law in an era of globalization. Accordingly, this collection situates cross-border norm development at the intersection of interdisciplinary scholarship on comparative law, conflict of laws, civil procedure, cyberlaw, legal pluralism and the cultural analysis of law, as well as traditional international law. It provides a broad range of seminal articles on transnational law-making, governmental and non-governmental networks, judicial influence and cooperation across borders, the dialectical relationships among national, international and non-state legal norms, and the possibilities of 'bottom-up' and plural law-making processes. The introduction situates these articles within the framework of law and globalization and suggests four important ways in which such a framework enlarges the traditional focus of international law. This book, therefore, provides a crucial reference for scholars and practitioners seeking to understand the varied processes of norm development in the emerging global legal order.

E-BooksThe Social Process of Globalization Return Migration and Cultural Change in Kazakhstan

The Social Process of Globalization Return Migration and Cultural Change in Kazakhstan
Douglas W. Blum, "The Social Process of Globalization: Return Migration and Cultural Change in Kazakhstan"
English | ISBN: 1107129680 | 2015 | 224 pages | PDF | 980 KB
It is often argued that globalization fosters 'hybridity', as some cultural imports are accepted, while others are 'localized', and others still are rejected outright. Yet we know relatively little about the social processes and mechanisms involved in cultural globalization. This book offers an empirically rich and theoretically compelling analysis of how cultural globalization occurs, including the structural conditions, personal meanings and social interactions associated with various outcomes. Providing a detailed analysis of the experiences of young people from Kazakhstan who lived in the United States temporarily, the author asks, how do return migrants react to cultural differences in America, and what changes do they try to incorporate into their lives back in Kazakhstan? What kinds of negotiations ensue, and what explains their success or failure? In answering these questions, Douglas W. Blum combines insights from sociology and anthropology along with specialized research on globalization, migration and post-Soviet studies.

E-BooksMedia, Nationalism and Globalization The Telangana Movement and Indian Politics

Media, Nationalism and Globalization The Telangana Movement and Indian Politics
Media, Nationalism and Globalization: The Telangana Movement and Indian Politics By Sumanth Inukonda
2019 | 170 Pages | ISBN: 0367134926 | PDF | 2 MB
This book explores the meanings of nationalism in a post-globalization, postcolonial context. It provides an in-depth understanding of the relationship between marginalized groups, media and politics by a focused study of the Telangana movement in India. Events like the Arab Spring, unrest in Myanmar and Ukraine, and the Brexit, Kurdish and Catalan referendums have proved how catalytic the changing media environment has been in reshaping the nature of resistance and social movements. Based on the author's ethnographic research, this book examines how marginalized groups engage with the media and their community to participate in political processes. Analyzing public meetings, folk performances, pamphlets and media reports of the Telangana movement, the author reflects on the cultural notions of nationalism and the politics of state formation in the post-colonial context. This volume also evaluates the role of students and intellectuals in contemporary social movements and in uniting the discontents of globalization. Highlighting intersections of performativity, geography and justice, this book examines changing articulations of identity and everyday forms of resistance. It will be useful for students and research scholars interested in media and communication, cultural studies, political sciences, ethnic and minority studies and sociocultural movements in India.

E-BooksAsian Medicine and Globalization

Asian Medicine and Globalization
Asian Medicine and Globalization By Joseph S. Alter (editor)
2005 | 200 Pages | ISBN: 0812238664 | PDF | 12 MB
Medical systems function in specific cultural contexts. It is common to speak of the medicine of China, Japan, India, and other nation-states. Yet almost all formalized medical systems claim universal applicability and, thus, are ready to cross the cultural boundaries that contain them. There is a critical tension, in theory and practice, in the ways regional medical systems are conceptualized as "nationalistic" or inherently transnational. This volume is concerned with questions and problems created by the friction between nationalism and transnationalism at a time when globalization has greatly complicated the notion of cultural, political, and economic boundedness.Offering a range of perspectives, the contributors address questions such as: How do states concern themselves with the modernization of "traditional" medicine? How does the global hegemony of science enable the nationalist articulation of alternative medicine? How do global discourses of science and "new age" spirituality facilitate the transnationalization of "Asian" medicine? As more and more Asian medical practices cross boundaries into Western culture through the popularity of yoga and herbalism, and as Western medicine finds its way east, these systems of meaning become inextricably interrelated. These essays consider the larger implications of transmissions between cultures.
