Engaging Ethnographic Peace Research
Gearoid Millar, "Engaging Ethnographic Peace Research"
English | ISBN: 036773088X | 2020 | 128 pages | EPUB | 921 KB
While many have argued in the past decade that peace and conflict studies must engage more with local actors and communities, and scholars regularly describe the importance of local context and culture for building sustainable peace, there are substantial challenges methodologically to fulfilling this 'local turn'. Many peace and conflict studies scholars are inexperienced with methods appropriate for engaging with local communities, contexts and cultures, and many of the important institutions in the field, from key journals to important funders, exhibit a continuing preference for quantitative studies.

E-BooksEngaging Couples New Directions in Therapeutic Work with Families

Engaging Couples New Directions in Therapeutic Work with Families
Engaging Couples: New Directions in Therapeutic Work with Families By Andrew Balfour (editor), Christopher Clulow (editor), Kate Thompson (editor)
2018 | 240 Pages | ISBN: 0367000024 | PDF | 3 MB
This book is a challenge to the silos in our human services that an 'atomised' focus gives rise to. They are evident in the chasm that can exist between child and adult mental health care, between competing therapeutic approaches and, most importantly for this volume, in the segmentation of support for adults who are partners as well as parents. The contributors, all with substantial experience of providing front-line services, identify the problem their intervention is designed to address, provide a conceptual justification for the approach they have used and supply evidence for its effectiveness. Vivid illustrations bring the work to life and provide examples of best practice whose relevance can readily be transported to different settings. Unusual in bringing together approaches that encompass internal and external realities in responding to the challenges of physical constraint, emotional distress and an often-volatile social environment, the contributions are assembled to highlight a common thread that can inform services at different stages of the life course. Each chapter is accompanied by a commentary from specialists in their field who elucidate and critique the key points made by the authors and help the experience of reading the book to be one of dialogue. Engaging Couples: New Directions in Therapeutic in Work with Families explores new ways of approaching some of the key issues of contemporary family life, including depression, living with long-term conditions, inter-parental conflict and domestic abuse to name but a few, refracting them through a lens that sees our relationships as fundamental to the fabric of our lives - the most important social capital of all. It represents essential reading for clinicians and family practitioners of all persuasions, and those that train and support them in their work.

Reform Judaism and Darwin How Engaging With Evolutionary Theory Shaped American Jewish Religion (Studia Judaica)
Daniel Langton, "Reform Judaism and Darwin: How Engaging With Evolutionary Theory Shaped American Jewish Religion (Studia Judaica) "
English | ISBN: 3110659131 | 2019 | 138 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
Darwin provoked Jewish as well as Christian thinkers so that many felt obliged to establish oppositional, alternative, synthetic, or complimentary models relating Jewish religion to his theory of natural selection. This book examines a range of leading nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American progressive Jewish thinkers, with the primary focus being rabbis Kohler, Wise, Hirsch, Krauskopf, and Hahn, although many others are covered. Key themes include the widespread commitment to universal evolutionism, that is, the application of biological evolutionary theory to other realms (e.g. history, religion, cosmic), and the particular fascination with the evolution of ethical systems within human societies, bearing in mind mankind's bestial origins and the new challenges for understanding religious authority and revelation. It is argued that Reform Jewish discussions about the nature of God have been more profoundly shaped by engagement with evolutionary theory than has been recognized before, and that evolutionary thought provides the key framework for understanding Reform Judaism itself. The precise nature of Jewish Reform engagement with Christian proponents of theistic evolution are important, as are their interest in alternative evolutionists to Darwin, such as Spencer and Haeckel.

The Elephant in the Room: Engaging with the Unsaid in Groups and Organizations
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1032412623 | 246 Pages | PDF (True) | 5 MB
A group is working on a business challenge. The group members are under pressure. They have a lot to accomplish and a limited amount of time. After first attempting to develop an overview of their common task, they try to make a plan to ensure an efficient group process. The planning is proving difficult. We've all been there. We are in a working group or at a meeting, discussing a topic or a challenge, and all the while, as a separate track running underneath our conversation, there is a subtext that no one explicitly addresses. This is an example of 'the elephant in the room.' Most of us notice the elephant, it gets in the way, and it's difficult to deal with until someone points at it and says, 'There it is, let's take a look at it and reduce its impact.'

E-BooksEngaging the World Thinking after Irigaray

Engaging the World Thinking after Irigaray
Engaging the World: Thinking after Irigaray By Mary C. Rawlinson (editor)
2016 | 314 Pages | ISBN: 1438460279 | PDF | 2 MB
Engaging the World explores Luce Irigaray s writings on sexual difference, deploying the resources of her work to rethink philosophical concepts and commitments and expose new possibilities of vitality in relationship to nature, others, and to one s self. The contributors present a range of perspectives from multiple disciplines such as philosophy, literature, education, evolutionary theory, sound technology, science and technology, anthropology, and psychoanalysis. They place Irigaray in conversation with thinkers as diverse as Charles Darwin, Claude Levi-Strauss, Gilles Deleuze, Rene Decartes, and Avital Ronell. While every essay challenges Irigaray s thought in some way, each one also reveals the transformative effects of her thought across multiple domains of contemporary life.
