Black-tailed and mule deer represent one of the largest distributions of mammals in North America and are symbols of the wide-open American West. Each chapter in this book was authored by the world's leading experts on that topic. Both editors, James R. Heffelfinger and Paul R. Krausman, are widely published in the popular and scientific press and recipients of the O. C. Wallmo Award, given every two years to a leading black-tailed and mule deer expert who has made significant contributions to the conservation of this species. In addition, Heffelfinger has chaired the Mule Deer Working Group sponsored by the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies for more than 15 years. This working group consists of the leading black-tailed and mule deer experts from each of 24 states, provinces, and territories in western North America, putting them at the forefront of all conservation and much of the research on this species.

E-BooksPoetry and the Anthropocene Ecology, Biology and Technology in Contemporary British and Irish Poetry

Poetry and the Anthropocene Ecology, Biology and Technology in Contemporary British and Irish Poetry
Free Download Poetry and the Anthropocene: Ecology, Biology and Technology in Contemporary British and Irish Poetry By Sam Solnick
2016 | 224 Pages | ISBN: 1138941689 | PDF | 3 MB
This book asks what it means to write poetry in and about the Anthropocene, the name given to a geological epoch where humans have a global ecological impact. Combining critical approaches such as ecocriticism and posthumanism with close reading and archival research, it argues that the Anthropocene requires poetry and the humanities to find new ways of thinking about unfamiliar spatial and temporal scales, about how we approach the metaphors and discourses of the sciences, and about the role of those processes and materials that confound humans' attempts to control or even conceptualise them. Poetry and the Anthropocene draws on the work of a series of poets from across the political and poetic spectrum, analysing how understandings of technology shape literature about place, evolution and the tradition of writing about what still gets called Nature. The book explores how writers' understanding of sciences such as climatology or biochemistry might shape their poetry's form, and how literature can respond to environmental crises without descending into agitprop, self-righteousness or apocalyptic cynicism. In the face of the Anthropocene's radical challenges to ethics, aesthetics and politics, the book shows how poetry offers significant ways of interrogating and rendering the complex relationships between organisms and their environments in a world increasingly marked by technology.Tags: Public Policy, Environmental, General, Development, Technology & Engineering, Environmental Policy, Sustainable Development, Business & Economics, Political Science

Ecology and Contemporary Nordic Cinemas From Nation-building to Ecocosmopolitanism
Free Download Pietari Kääpä, "Ecology and Contemporary Nordic Cinemas: From Nation-building to Ecocosmopolitanism "
English | ISBN: 1441192794 | 2014 | 272 pages | EPUB | 430 KB
Ecology and Contemporary Nordic Cinemas challenges the traditional socio-political rhetoric of national cinema by providing an ecocritical examination of Nordic cinema. The author uses a range of analytical approaches to interrogate how the national paradigm can be rethought through ecosystemic concerns, by exploring a range of Nordic films as national and transnational, regional and local texts, all with significant global implications. By synergizing transnational theories with ecological approaches, the study considers the planetary implications of nation-based cultural production.

E-BooksA Chance for Lasting Survival Ecology and Behavior of Wild Giant Pandas

A Chance for Lasting Survival Ecology and Behavior of Wild Giant Pandas
Free Download Pan Wenshi, "A Chance for Lasting Survival: Ecology and Behavior of Wild Giant Pandas "
English | ISBN: 1935623176 | 2014 | 367 pages | EPUB | 41 MB
From 1984 through 1995 a small band of ecologists led by Pan Wenshi from Peking University conducted a study of wild giant pandas in the Qinling Mountains of Shaanxi Province. This project was the first Chinese-led conservation project in China and was conducted during a significant transition period in Chinese history, as the country opened its society and science to the world. The project focused on behavioral observation of wild giant pandas, but evolved to include physiology, nutrition, ecology, land-use policy, and population biology as the staff became more aware that the issues with captive pandas (assisted reproduction, unusual diet, and genetic inbreeding) were not the most critical to survival of wild populations. It is evident in this work that, as the scientists gained knowledge, they came to see giant panda conservation as wrapped in landscape ecology and human/wildlife interactions. The group was seminal in the Chinese government's enactment of a logging ban to their study area by advocating for pandas at the national level. The project was summarized in a 2001 volume, but its publication in Mandarin limited its influence on the greater conservation community. This English version of the original work translates, condenses, and refines the original volume, with added contextual chapters on the importance of this volume and how our understanding of giant panda conservation is shaped by this pioneering field work.
