Eco-Stats - Data Analysis in Ecology: From t-tests to Multivariate Abundances
English | 2022 | ISBN: 3030884422 | 441 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 24 MB
Assuming only a vague recollection of an introductory statistics course, the book begins by reviewing some core principles in statistics, and relates common methods to the linear model, a general framework for modeling data where the response is continuous. This is then extended to discrete data using generalized linear models, to designs with multiple sampling levels via mixed models, and to situations where there are multiple response variables via model-based approaches to multivariate analysis. Along the way there is an introduction to: important principles in model selection; adaptations of the model to handle non-linearity and cyclical variables; dependence due to structured correlation in time, space or phylogeny; and design-based techniques for inference that can relax some of the modelling assumptions. Examples span a variety of applications including environmental monitoring, species distribution modeling, global-scale surveys of plant traits, and small field experiments on biological controls. Maths Boxes throughout the book explain some of the core ideas mathematically for readers who want to delve deeper, and R code is used throughout. Accompanying code and data can be found in the ecostats R package on CRAN.

E-BooksStatistical Approaches for Hidden Variables in Ecology

Statistical Approaches for Hidden Variables in Ecology
Statistical Approaches for Hidden Variables in Ecology by Nathalie Peyrard, Olivier Gimenez
English | March 15, 2022 | ISBN: 1789450470 | True EPUB/PDF | 256 pages | 12.7/12.6 MB
The study of ecological systems is often impeded by components that escape perfect observation, such as the trajectories of moving animals or the status of plant seed banks. These hidden components can be efficiently handled with statistical modeling by using hidden variables, which are often called latent variables. Notably, the hidden variables framework enables us to model an underlying interaction structure between variables (including random effects in regression models) and perform data clustering, which are useful tools in the analysis of ecological data.

Barn Owls Evolution and Ecology
Alexandre Roulin, "Barn Owls: Evolution and Ecology"
English | 2020 | pages: 317 | ISBN: 110716575X | PDF | 59,7 mb
With heart-shaped face, buff back and wings, and pure white underparts, the barn owl is a distinctive and much-loved bird which has fascinated people from many cultures throughout history. How did the barn owl colonise the world? What adaptations have made this bird so successful? How is the increasing impact of human disturbance affecting these animals? Answering these questions and more, Roulin brings together the main global perspectives on the evolution, ecology and behaviour of the barn owl and its relatives, discussing topics such as the high reproductive potential, physiology, social and family interaction, pronounced colour variation and global distribution. Accessible and beautifully illustrated, this definitive volume on the barn owl is for researchers, professionals and graduate students in ornithology, animal behaviour, ecology, conservation biology and evolutionary biology, and will also appeal to amateur ornithologists and nature lovers.

E-BooksEcology and Behaviour of the Ladybird Beetles (Coccinellidae)

Ecology and Behaviour of the Ladybird Beetles (Coccinellidae)
Ecology and Behaviour of the Ladybird Beetles (Coccinellidae) By
2012 | 599 Pages | ISBN: 1405184221 | PDF | 6 MB
Ladybirds are probably the best known predators of aphids and coccids in the world, though this greatly underestimates the diversity of their biology. Maximising their impact on their prey is an important element in modern conservation biological control of indigenous natural enemies in contrast to the classical approach of releasing alien species. Ivo Hodek is one of the most internationally respected experts on coccinellids who has researched these insects for his entire career. He has now brought together 14 scientists of international standing to author 12 chapters, making this book the definitive treatment of coccinellid biology and ecology. This volume covers the rapid scientific developments of recent years in the understanding of coccinellid phylogeny, the semiochemicals influencing their behaviour and of molecular genetics. Recent insights in relation to intraguild predation and the assessment of the predatory impact of coccinellids are also covered. Other special features of the volume are the extensive references covering the literature from both East and West and a taxonomic glossary of the up-to-date nomenclature for species of coccinellids as well as of other organisms mentioned in the text. While aimed at researchers, university teachers and agricultural entomologists, the book is readable and appropriate for others who just have a liking for these interesting and attractive insects.Content: Chapter 1 Phylogeny and Classification (pages 1-12): Oldrich Nedved and Ivo KovarChapter 2 Genetic Studies (pages 13-53): John J. Greening the Paranormal Exploring the Ecology of Extraordinary Experience
Jack Hunter, "Greening the Paranormal: Exploring the Ecology of Extraordinary Experience"
English | ISBN: 1786771098 | 2019 | 332 pages | AZW3 | 535 KB
We are at a critical moment in the history of humankind's relationship with the Earth, and all the species that co-inhabit with us. This is a time of climate change, species loss and ecological collapse on a scale that has never been seen before. New ways of thinking will be required if we hope to overcome these global problems and develop a more harmonious relationship between the human and non-human worlds. In the spirit of creative exploration this book suggests that approaches emerging from the study of (and engagement with) the super-natural may ultimately help us to re-connect with the natural, and in so doing develop innovative approaches to confronting the eco-crisis.
