Women in the Middle East and North Africa Restoring Women to History
Free Download Women in the Middle East and North Africa: Restoring Women to History By Guity Nashat; Judith E. Tucker
1999 | 160 Pages | ISBN: 0253334780 | PDF | 4 MB
Tracing the evolution of the role of women from ancient Middle Eastern societies through the 17th century, Guity Nashat employs a rational-choice theoretical framework, examining the interplay between local practices and early Islamic beliefs and institutions. As Islam expanded throughout the area, the foundations of Islamic law and practice with regard to women underwent significant development. Judith Tucker surveys women's gender issues in the 19th- and 20th-century Middle East, with a particular focus on economic activity, access to political power, and contributions to cultural life. Her essay also addresses the role that Islam and indigenous custom are thought to play in shaping women's lives.

E-BooksHealth and Hygiene in Chinese East Asia Policies and Publics in the Long Twentieth Century

Health and Hygiene in Chinese East Asia Policies and Publics in the Long Twentieth Century
Free Download Charlotte Furth, "Health and Hygiene in Chinese East Asia: Policies and Publics in the Long Twentieth Century"
English | 2011 | ISBN: 0822348152, 0822348268 | PDF | pages: 345 | 2.3 mb
This collection expands the history of colonial medicine and public health by exploring efforts to overcome disease and improve human health in Chinese regions of East Asia from the late nineteenth century to the present. The contributors consider the science and politics of public health policymaking and implementation in Taiwan, Manchuria, Hong Kong, and the Yangzi River delta, focusing mostly on towns and villages rather than cities. Whether discussing the resistance of lay midwives in colonial Taiwan to the Japanese campaign to replace them with experts in "scientific motherhood" or the reaction of British colonists in Shanghai to Chinese diet and health regimes, they illuminate the effects of foreign interventions and influences on particular situations and localities. They discuss responses to epidemics from the plague in early-twentieth-century Manchuria to SARS in southern China, Singapore, and Taiwan, but they also emphasize that public health is not just about epidemic crises. As essays on marsh drainage in Taiwan, the enforcement of sanitary ordinances in Shanghai, and vaccination drives in Manchuria show, throughout the twentieth century public health bureaucracies have primarily been engaged in the mundane activities of education, prevention, and monitoring.

The Idea of QiGi East Asian and Comparative Philosophical Perspectives
Free Download Suk Choi, "The Idea of Qi/Gi: East Asian and Comparative Philosophical Perspectives"
English | ISBN: 149855797X | 2018 | 192 pages | EPUB | 373 KB
The notion of qi/gi (氣) is one of the most pervasive notions found within the various areas of the East Asian intellectual and cultural traditions. While the pervasiveness of the notion provides us with an opportunity to observe the commonalities amongst the East Asian intellectual and cultural traditions, it also allows us to observe the differences. This book focuses more on understanding the different meanings and logics that the notion of qi/gi has acquired within the East Asian traditions for the purpose of understanding the diversity of these traditions. This volume begins to fulfill this task by inquiring into how the notion was understood by traditional Korean philosophers, in addition to investigating how the notion was understood by traditional Chinese philosophers.

E-BooksSocial Sector Development in North–East India

Social Sector Development in North–East India
Free Download Ashok Pankaj, "Social Sector Development in North-East India "
English | ISBN: 9353885329 | 2021 | 432 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Social Sector Development in North-east India is the first comprehensive book that makes a strong case for people-centric social sector development of North-east India. This book argues that human capital formation through social sector development should be the strategic goal of development of this region, as the prospect for service sector development is much higher compared to that of the primary and secondary sectors. This needs a course correction in the erstwhile approaches of development, which has been driven by political and strategic considerations such as national security and the territorial integrity of India. This book advances an argument for a shift in approach of development policy from top-down, infrastructure-focused to bottom-up, people-centric and social sector development-focused. It also critiques the mainstream understanding of North-east India that treats it as a geographical entity and a monolithic socio-cultural society, ignoring its rich ethnic diversities, cultural pluralities and regional variations.

E-BooksSecurity Governance in East Africa Pictures of Policing from the Ground

Security Governance in East Africa Pictures of Policing from the Ground
Free Download Kennedy Agade Mkutu, "Security Governance in East Africa: Pictures of Policing from the Ground"
English | ISBN: 1498553656 | 2017 | 252 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
This collection of cases from East Africa, contributed largely by locally-based authors, explores the increasing security governance phenomenon in the region: that is, the mix of state and non-state actors, including private entities, volunteer auxiliaries, homegrown vigilantes and gangs, and the relationship between police and communities. Local dynamics brought by globalization, liberalization, the new scramble for resource wealth, inequality, and international terrorism are observed in detail, superimposed upon the well-known development challenges, ethnopolitical divides, and patterns of government and security provision which continue to reflect their colonial past. This book raises both practical and theoretical ethical dilemmas of the increasing fragmentation of security functions within Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan, mainland Tanzania, and Zanzibar. It is a vital contribution to the "non-state," "plural policing" debates and is of both local and global relevance.
