E-BooksDictators as Gatekeepers Outsourcing EU border controls to Africa

Dictators as Gatekeepers Outsourcing EU border controls to Africa
Christian Jakob, "Dictators as Gatekeepers: Outsourcing EU border controls to Africa"
English | ISBN: 1988832276 | 2019 | 270 pages | EPUB | 956 KB
The USA is divided around the wall President Trump wants to build along the Mexican border. Europe has long answered this question at its own southern border: put up that wall but don't make it look like one. Today the EU is trying to close many deals as it can with African states, making it harder and harder for refugees to find protection and more dangerous for labor migrants to reach places where they can earn an income. But this is not the only effect: the more Europe tries to control migration from Africa, the harder it becomes for many Africans to move freely through their own continent, even within their own countries. Increasingly, the billions Europe pays for migration control is declared as official development assistance (ODA), more widely known as 'development aid, supposedly for poverty relief and humanitarian assistance. The EU is spending billions buying African leaders as gatekeepers, including dictators and suspected war criminals. And the real beneficiaries are the military and technology corporations involved in the implementation.

Cultures of governance and peace A comparison of EU and Indian theoretical and policy approaches
J. Burgess, "Cultures of governance and peace: A comparison of EU and Indian theoretical and policy approaches"
English | ISBN: 0719099552 | 2016 | 208 pages | EPUB | 420 KB
This volume brings together insights which look at the intersection of governance, culture and conflict resolution in India and the European Union. Two very different but connected epistemic, cultural and institutional settings, which have been divided by distance, colonialism and culture; yet have recently been brought closer together by ideas and practices of what is known as liberal peace, neoliberal state and development projects. The differences are obvious in terms of geography, culture, the nature and shape of institutions, and historical forces: and yet the commonalities between the two are surprising.

Second, the volume deals with Romania both as a representative case for the region, given the commonalities raised by the transition process in the last three decades, and also as a country with a specific energy agenda, with implications for internal and foreign policy that can only be perceived and understood in the Romanian context.

The EU's growing dependence on natural gas and Russian resources, energy security has become a hot discussion topic in academia and in policy circles in Brussels, Washington and many European capitals. However, most of the books on the subject use a very descriptive and/or normative approach and very few attempt to theorise EU energy security outside of mainstream conceptualisations of the EU as an international actor.

EU Foreign Policy and Hamas Inconsistencies and Paradoxes
Adeeb Ziadeh, "EU Foreign Policy and Hamas: Inconsistencies and Paradoxes "
English | ISBN: 1138040002 | 2017 | 254 pages | EPUB | 1156 KB
Shortly after the overwhelming victory of Hamas in the 2006 parliamentary and municipal elections, civil war broke out in the Gaza Strip between members of the two factions, Hamas and Fatah. The EU, along with the US, UN and Russia, not only gave its support to Fatah against Hamas, but also imposed a tough siege on the Hamas government in an attempt to force it to accept the Quartet's political conditions, described by Hamas leaders as unfair and impossible. Many observers are convinced that the EU's behaviour in this matter has been unreasonable and has conflicted with the EU's own democratic beliefs and values.
