Smart Water Heating: How Domestic Electric Water Heaters can be used to perform Demand-Side-Management By Julian Bruno Bruhn
2019 | 80 Pages | ISBN: 620249011X | PDF | 1 MB
Electric water heaters are responsible for a significant proportion of household electricity consumption. Given their high rated power and storage capacity, they represent promising applications for demand-side-management measures, which could provide economic benefits for households and aid the successful transition of the energy system. This work proposes an algorithm that could control electric water heaters intelligently throughout existing residential demand-side-management programs in Germany, minimizing energy cost while maintaining the habitual health and comfort standards users of conventionally operating hot water tanks are accustomed to. It was revealed, that even once the forecast error associated with seasonal single exponential smoothing is introduced, up to 21 % cost savings can be achieved, without any deterioration of user comfort. The simulation results and estimated low computational resource requirements suggest the economic viability of implementing the algorithm in a locally embedded device and that extensive dissemination of demand-side-management for electric water heaters might be feasible in the current electricity tariff environment.

The Afterlife of Property Domestic Security and the Victorian Novel
The Afterlife of Property: Domestic Security and the Victorian Novel by Jeff Nunokawa
English | March 21, 1994 | ISBN: 069103320X, 0691114676 | True EPUB | 160 pages | 0.7 MB
In The Afterlife of Property, Jeff Nunokawa investigates the conviction passed on by the Victorian novel that a woman's love is the only fortune a man can count on to last. Taking for his example four texts, Charles Dickens's Little Dorrit and Dombey and Son, and George Eliot's Daniel Deronda and Silas Marner, Nunokawa studies the diverse ways that the Victorian novel imagines women as property removed from the uncertainties of the marketplace. Along the way, he notices how the categories of economics, gender, sexuality, race, and fiction define one another in the Victorian novel.

International Criminal Tribunals as Actors of Domestic Change: The Impact on Media Coverage, Volume 2 (Studies in Political Transition) By Irena Ristic (editor), Gerhard Kemp (editor), Klaus Bachmann (editor)
2019 | 136 Pages | ISBN: 3631770553 | PDF | 5 MB
Do International Criminal Tribunals trigger social change, provide reconciliation, stabilize fragile post-conflict societies? Many authors claim they do, but they base their assumptions mainly on theoretical considerations and opinion polls. The editors and authors of this book take a different position: based on extensive field research in nine European and African countries, they examine whether tribunal decisions resulted in changes in media frames about the conflicts which gave rise to the creation of these tribunals. International Tribunals hardly ever shape or change the grand narratives about wars and other conflicts, but they often manage to trigger small changes in media frames which, in some cases, even lead to public reflexion about guilt and responsibility and more awareness for (the respective enemy's) victims. On an empirical basis, this book shows the potential of International Criminal Justice, the possibilities, but also the limits of International Criminal Tribunals. Volume 2 presents the evidence from Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan and South Sudan.

Dust and Dignity Domestic Employment in Contemporary Ecuador
Erynn Masi de Casanova, "Dust and Dignity: Domestic Employment in Contemporary Ecuador"
English | ISBN: 150173945X | 2019 | 192 pages | EPUB | 814 KB
What makes domestic work a bad job, even after efforts to formalize and improve working conditions? Erynn Masi de Casanova's case study, based partly on collaborative research conducted with Ecuador's pioneer domestic workers' organization, examines three reasons for persistent exploitation. First, the tasks of social reproduction are devalued. Second, informal work arrangements escape regulation. And third, unequal class relations are built into this type of employment. Accessible to advocates and policymakers as well as academics, this book provides both theoretical discussions about domestic work and concrete ideas for improving women's lives.

Domestic Spaces in Post-Mao China On Electronic Household Appliances
Wang Min'an, "Domestic Spaces in Post-Mao China: On Electronic Household Appliances "
English | ISBN: 0415784859 | 2017 | 101 pages | EPUB | 384 KB
Unconventional, creative, and highly original, Wang Min'an's work centres on the assemblage of household machines that create the space of contemporary domesticity. It offers pathways to a new understanding of how the sudden commodification of domestic space in China beginning in the late 1980s has transformed Chinese domestic life beyond recognition. In terms of modern urban Chinese family life, people do not just move into new apartments; they move into new modes of living which involve new ways of relating to the world. Wang's discussion on the reconstitution of Chinese domestic life―its founding moral, aesthetic, political values―is tremendously useful and enlightening.
