Useful Adversaries: Grand Strategy, Domestic Mobilization, and Sino-American Conflict, 1947-1958 (Princeton Studies in International History and Politics) by Thomas J. Christensen
English | November 11, 1996 | ISBN: 0691026386, 0691026378 | True EPUB/PDF | 336 pages | 5.3/33.6 MB
This book provides a new analysis of why relations between the United States and the Chinese Communists were so hostile in the first decade of the Cold War. Employing extensive documentation, it offers a fresh approach to long-debated questions such as why Truman refused to recognize the Chinese Communists, why the United States aided Chiang Kai-shek's KMT on Taiwan, why the Korean War escalated into a Sino-American conflict, and why Mao shelled islands in the Taiwan Straits in 1958, thus sparking a major crisis with the United States.

E-BooksThe Impact of the Domestic Linen Industry in Ulster

The Impact of the Domestic Linen Industry in Ulster
W.H. Crawford, "The Impact of the Domestic Linen Industry in Ulster"
English | 2004 | ISBN: 190368837X | EPUB | pages: 223 | 2.5 mb
The domestic linen industry left an indelible imprint on Ulster history. It was introduced by colonists from the north of England in the 17th century, before the arrival of the Huguenots, and encouraged by the landlords to improve their rentals. Earnings from raising flax, spinning yarn and weaving cloth, provided farming families with regular incomes that enabled them to lease small farms and improve marginal land. Continual improvements by Ulster bleachers in the finishing of linens secured for them control of the industry, focussing its development. Exports to Britain first through Dublin and then direct to Liverpool and London, created a merchant class and underpinned the development of Belfast and the provincial market towns. By 1800 Ulster was reckoned to be the most prosperous province in Ireland. It was also the most densely peopled with a population of two million in 1821, almost equal to that of Scotland.

E-BooksDomestic Violence and COVID-19 The 2020 Lockdown in the European Union

Domestic Violence and COVID-19 The 2020 Lockdown in the European Union
Joachim Kersten, "Domestic Violence and COVID-19: The 2020 Lockdown in the European Union "
English | ISBN: 3031153340 | 2023 | 107 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This brief maps the available data augmented by expert interviews on the impact of the Covid-19 measures on DV in eight European Member States during the first lock-down. The volume addresses an on-going situation, additionally complicated by renewed lockdown restrictions during autumn and early winter 2020. It assesses the assumptions of an imminent wave of domestic violence against reliable data from crime statistics, surveys, and various institutions responding to domestic violence. Collecting partner country reports from Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Portugal, Scotland and Slovenia, it demonstrates the effects that lockdown measures starting March 2020 had on reported DV incidents. It considers the differences between each country with respect to policing, legal systems, social and cultural factors and highlights best practices to prevent conditions resulting from Covid-19 lockdown undermining victims' security and frontline responders' capacities to provide services and prevent domestic violence.

E-BooksDomestic Slavery in Syria and Egypt, 1200-1500

Domestic Slavery in Syria and Egypt, 1200-1500
Jan Hinrich Hagedorn, "Domestic Slavery in Syria and Egypt, 1200-1500 "
English | ISBN: 3847110918 | 2019 | 245 pages | PDF | 9 MB
Slavery touched many aspects of Mamluk society. This volume focuses on the role of slaves within the family, from birth to purchase, liberation, and death. It investigates domestic slavery in Syrian and Egyptian society from the thirteenth to the fifteenth century. Jan Hagedorn focuses on the agency of slaves in the context of master-slave relationships within households and in wider society. He argues that the ability of slaves to shape the world around them was underpinned by a constant process of negotiation within the master-slave relationship and that intermediaries such as the court system channelled the agency of slaves. The principal sources for this study are purchase contracts, listening certificates, marriage contracts, and estate inventories in combination with scribal, market inspection, and slave purchase manuals as well as chronicles.
