E-BooksLucretius on Disease The Poetics of Morbidity in ›de Rerum Natura‹

Lucretius on Disease The Poetics of Morbidity in ›de Rerum Natura‹
Lucretius on Disease: The Poetics of Morbidity in ›de Rerum Natura‹ By George Kazantzidis
2021 | 218 Pages | ISBN: 3110722658 | PDF | 2 MB
The standard view in scholarship is that disease in Lucretius' De rerum natura is mainly a problem to be solved and then dispensed with. However, a closer reading suggests that things are more layered and complex than they appear at first sight: just as morbus causes a radical rearrangement of atoms in the body and makes the patient engage with alternative and up to that point unknown dimensions of the sensible world, so does disease as a theme generate a multiplicity of meanings in the text. The present book argues for a reconsideration of morbus in De rerum natura along those lines: it invites the reader to revisit the topic of disease and reflect on the various, and often contrasting, discourses that unfold around it. More specifically, it illustrates how, apart from calling for therapy, disease, due to its dominant presence in the narrative, transforms at the same time into a concept that is integral both to the poem's philosophical agenda but also to its wider aesthetic concerns as a literary product. The book thus sheds new light on De rerum natura's intense preoccupation with morbus by showing how disease is not exclusively conceived by Lucretius as a blind, obliterating force but is crucially linked to life and meaning--both inside and outside the text.

E-BooksDissolving Illusions Disease, Vaccines, and The Forgotten History Ed 6

Dissolving Illusions Disease, Vaccines, and The Forgotten History Ed 6
Suzanne Humphries MD, "Dissolving Illusions: Disease, Vaccines, and The Forgotten History Ed 6"
English | ISBN: 1480216895 | 2013 | 504 pages | PDF | 16 MB
Not too long ago, lethal infections were feared in the Western world. Since that time, many countries have undergone a transformation from disease cesspools to much safer, healthier habitats. Starting in the mid-1800s, there was a steady drop in deaths from all infectious diseases, decreasing to relatively minor levels by the early 1900s. The history of that transformation involves famine, poverty, filth, lost cures, eugenicist doctrine, individual freedoms versus state might, protests and arrests over vaccine refusal, and much more.Today, we are told that medical interventions increased our lifespan and single-handedly prevented masses of deaths. But is this really true?Dissolving Illusions details facts and figures from long-overlooked medical journals, books, newspapers, and other sources. Using myth-shattering graphs, this book shows that vaccines, antibiotics, and other medical interventions are not responsible for the increase in lifespan and the decline in mortality from infectious diseases. If the medical profession could systematically misinterpret and ignore key historical information, the question must be asked, "What else is ignored and misinterpreted today?"Perhaps the best reason to know our history is so that the worst parts are never repeated.
