E-BooksComparative Religion

Comparative Religion
Eric J. Sharpe, "Comparative Religion"
English | 1986 | pages: 361 | ISBN: 0715610813 | PDF | 27,3 mb
This book is now firmly established as the standard treatment of its subject. The history of comparative religion is traced in detail from its beginnings in the nineteenth century, in the work of scholars such as Max Muller and anthropologists - such as Tylor, Lang, Robertson-Smith and Frazer - through the American psychologists of religion - such as Starbuck, Leuba, William James - to the period after the First World War, when the evolutionary approach was seriously called into question. It also examines the relevance of religion to Freud and Jung; the 'phenomenology of religion'; the tensions between comparative religion and theology; and the work of such outstanding personalities as Nathan Söderblom and Rudolf Otto. The last two chapters review the main issues raised since the Second World War.

E-BooksStereo Comparative Perspectives on the Sociological Study of Popular Music in France and Britain

Stereo Comparative Perspectives on the Sociological Study of Popular Music in France and Britain
Stereo: Comparative Perspectives on the Sociological Study of Popular Music in France and Britain By Hugh Dauncey, Philippe Le Guern
2011 | 296 Pages | ISBN: 1409405680 | PDF | 3 MB
The term 'Popular Music' has traditionally denoted different things in France and Britain. In France, the very concept of 'popular' music has been fiercely debated and contested, whereas in Britain and more largely throughout what the French describe as the 'Anglo-saxon' world 'popular music' has been more readily accepted as a description of what people do as leisure or consume as part of the music industry, and as something that academics are legitimately entitled to study. French researchers have for some decades been keenly interested in reading British and American studies of popular culture and popular music and have often imported key concepts and methodologies into their own work on French music, but apart from the widespread use of elements of 'French theory' in British and American research, the 'Anglo-saxon' world has remained largely ignorant of particular traditions of the study of popular music in France and specific theoretical debates or organisational principles of the making and consuming of French musics. French, British and American research into popular music has thus coexisted - with considerable cross-fertilisation - for many years, but the barriers of language and different academic traditions have made it hard for French and anglophone researchers to appreciate fully the ways in which popular music has developed in their respective countries and the perspectives on its study adopted by their colleagues. This volume provides a comparative and contrastive perspective on popular music and its study in France and the UK.

E-BooksHistories of Legal Aid A Comparative and International Perspective

Histories of Legal Aid A Comparative and International Perspective
Histories of Legal Aid: A Comparative and International Perspective
English | 2021 | ISBN: 3030802701 | 486 Pages | PDF EPUB | 4 MB
This book focuses on the history of the provision of legal aid and legal assistance to the poor in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in eight different countries. It is the first such book to bring together historical work on legal aid in a comparative perspective, and allows readers to analogise and contrast historical narratives about free legal aid across countries. Legal aid developed as a result of industrialisation, urbanization, immigration, the rise of philanthropy, and what were viewed as new legal problems. Closely related, was the growing professionalisation of lawyers and the question of what duties lawyers owed society to perform free work. Yet, legal aid providers in many countries included lay women and men, leading at times to tensions with the bar. Furthermore, legal aid often became deeply politicized, creating dramatic conflicts concerning the rights of the poor to have equal access to justice.

E-BooksPractice and Theory in Comparative Law

Practice and Theory in Comparative Law
Practice and Theory in Comparative Law By Professor Maurice Adams, Jacco Bomhoff
2012 | 354 Pages | ISBN: 1107010853 | PDF | 4 MB
What does doing comparative law involve? Too often, explicit methodological discussions in comparative law remain limited to the level of pure theory, neglecting to test out critiques and recommendations on concrete issues. This book bridges this gap between theory and practice in comparative legal studies. Essays by both established and younger comparative lawyers reflect on the methodological challenges arising in their own work and in work in their area. Taken together, they offer clear recommendations for, and critical reflection on, a wide range of innovative comparative research projects.

Judiciaries in Comparative Perspective
Judiciaries in Comparative Perspective By H. P. Lee
2011 | 624 Pages | ISBN: 0521190606 | PDF | 4 MB
An independent and impartial judiciary is fundamental to the existence and operation of a liberal democracy. Focussing on Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States, this comparative study explores four major issues affecting the judicial institution. These issues relate to the appointment and discipline of judges; judges and freedom of speech; the performance of non-judicial functions by judges; and judicial bias and recusal, and each is set within the context of the importance of maintaining public confidence in the judiciary. The essays highlight important episodes or controversies affecting members of the judiciary to illustrate relevant principles.
