E-BooksDemocratic Policing in a Changing World

Democratic Policing in a Changing World
Free Download Peter K. Manning, "Democratic Policing in a Changing World"
English | ISBN: 1594515468 | 2011 | 326 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Democratic Policing today is a widely used approach to policing not only in Western societies but increasingly around the world. Yet it is rarely defined and it is little understood by the public and even by many of its practitioners. This book combines political philosophy, sociology, and criminal justice to develop a widely applicable fundamental conception of democratic policing. Democratic Policing is built on a basic principle that building trust with citizens is the basis of more effective and beneficial policing in a community. This requires an approach to equality among social groups that has not been present or referred to widely in police studies or in criminal justice. Moreover, it requires an understanding of the postmodern world: of rapid communication, displacement of time and space, and cheap worldwide transportation. These changes can cause displacement and distrust across national and cultural boundaries, even as states grow weaker and the local nature of policing comes into question. Insofar as policing is a means for coping with uncertainty and reducing distrust, it faces new challenges from contingencies produced by the media, the law, untoward events, internal command and control issues, and variations in officially recorded crime. These trends call for the basic reformulation of the foundations of democratic policing taken up in this book. Manning delineates today's relationship between democracy and policing. He documents the failure of police reform, showing that each new approach crime mapping, community policing, problem solving, and hotspots policing has failed to alter any fundamental practice and has in fact increased inequalities. He offers new and better approaches for scholars, policy makers, police, governments, and societies to establish more effective policing.

Changing Governance and Management in Higher Education The Perspectives of the Academy (2024)
Free Download William Locke, William K. Cummings, Donald Fisher, "Changing Governance and Management in Higher Education: The Perspectives of the Academy"
English | 2011 | pages: 397 | ISBN: 9400711395, 9400736363 | PDF | 3,2 mb
External drivers are pressing for a more privatized approach to higher education and research, a greater reliance on technology and the more efficient use of resources. This book analyzes recent changes in institutional governance and management in higher education and their impact on the academy and academic work. It draws on findings from an international study based on a survey of academics in eighteen countries. It opens with a chapter outlining the key issues, drivers and challenges that inform contemporary discourse around academic work and the profession in general. It then focuses on national case studies, comparing changes in the top tier with the lower tiers of national systems, public and private institutions, and other differentiating factors appropriate in each country, which include mature and emerging higher education systems. It concludes by proposing a series of generalizations about the contemporary status of governance and management of institutions of higher education.

E-BooksChanging Families, Changing Responsibilities Family Obligations Following Divorce and Remarriage

Changing Families, Changing Responsibilities Family Obligations Following Divorce and Remarriage
Free Download Changing Families, Changing Responsibilities: Family Obligations Following Divorce and Remarriage By Lawrence H. Ganong
1999 | 216 Pages | ISBN: 0805826912 | PDF | 2 MB
This book explores the topic of family obligations following changes in family structure caused by divorce and remarriage. Family obligations are commonly defined as the rights and duties that accompany family roles. They have been described as the "glue" that connects generations, as well as the "oughts" and "shoulds" that surround individual family relationships. This book is primarily concerned with normative beliefs about what family members should do for each other. It differs from previous accounts of family obligation norms because it specifically focuses on family responsibilities after divorce and remarriage, two events that affect an increasing number of families today. The authors draw extensively upon the findings of 13 studies of normative beliefs regarding post-divorce intergenerational family obligations. This book fills a gap in the present literature concerning family obligation. It addresses the weaknesses of prior research by focusing on family transitions and by presenting data from studies that employ contextual methods. The content will provide guidance to policymakers and helping professionals who work with families, and the unique focus and procedures of the studies are likely to set the standard for future assessments of normative beliefs about family obligations.

E-BooksChanging Face Of Innovation, The Is It Shifting To Asia

Changing Face Of Innovation, The Is It Shifting To Asia
Free Download Daniel Joo-Then Ng, "Changing Face Of Innovation, The: Is It Shifting To Asia?"
English | 2011 | pages: 217 | ISBN: 9814291587 | PDF | 6,9 mb
This book provides a brief overview of the recent trends in innovations. Early inventions/innovations that began in Asia (i.e., compass, paper, gunpowder and printing) spread to the Atlantic (Europe and Usa) by land and sea routes. However, with population growth, economic expansion, availability of skilled researchers and lower cost of research in Asia Pacific, there has been a shift in innovation activities in this region. There has been a discernable trend of innovation (R&D) in countries like Japan, Korea, China, India and Singapore. This book attempts to create awareness of this trend and hopes to motivate business leaders and policy makers to take advantage of this shifting trend, as well as to encourage more global collaboration in innovations to face societal challenges in the 21st century.
