Perversions of Justice Indigenous Peoples and Anglo-american Law
Perversions of Justice: Indigenous Peoples and Anglo-american Law By Ward Churchill, Sharon Venne
2003 | 296 Pages | ISBN: 0872864111 | PDF | 22 MB
The United States is readily distinguishable from other countries, Chief Justice John Marshall opined in 1803, because it is "a nation of laws, not of men." In Perversions of Justice, Ward Churchill takes Marshall at his word, exploring through a series of 11 carefully crafted essays how the U.S. has consistently employed a corrupt from of legalism as a means of establishing colonial control and empire. Along the way, he demonstrates how this "nation of laws" has so completely subverted the law of nations that the current America-dominated international order ends up, like the U.S. -itself, functioning in a manner dia-metrically opposed to the ideals of freedom and democracy it professes to embrace.By tracing the evolution of federal Indian law, Churchill is able to show how the premises set forth therein not only spilled over onto non-Indians in the U.S., but were also adapted for application abroad. The trajectory of America's imperial logic can be followed all the way to the present New World Order in which "what we say goes" at the dawn of the third millennium.

E-BooksThe Anglo-Norman Historical Canon Publishing and Manuscript Culture

The Anglo-Norman Historical Canon Publishing and Manuscript Culture
Jaakko Tahkokallio, "The Anglo-Norman Historical Canon: Publishing and Manuscript Culture "
English | ISBN: 1108713777 | 2019 | 75 pages | PDF | 716 KB
This Element is a contribution to the ongoing debate on what it meant to publish a book in manuscript. It offers case-studies of three twelfth-century Anglo-Norman historians: William of Malmesbury, Henry of Huntingdon, and Geoffrey of Monmouth. It argues that the contemporary success and rapid attainment of canonical authority for their histories was in significant measure the result of successfully conducted publishing activities. These activities are analysed using the concept of a 'publishing circle'. This concept, it is suggested, may have wider utility in the study of authorial publishing in a manuscript culture. This Element is also available as Open Access.

Verbal Encounters Anglo-Saxon and Old Norse Studies for Roberta Frank
Verbal Encounters: Anglo-Saxon and Old Norse Studies for Roberta Frank By Antonina Harbus, Russell Poole
2005 | 310 Pages | ISBN: 0802080111 | PDF | 14 MB
Due to conquests and colonialism through the centuries, it is not unusual for languages and cultures to be influenced by other, foreign languages and cultures. The modern English language, for example, owes many of its words to Old Norse and Latin, debts dating from contacts made during the Middle Ages. "Verbal Encounters" is a collection of papers on the cultural and linguistic exchange in Old Norse, Old English, and medieval Latin literature written in honour of Roberta Frank, former University Professor of Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto. The essays feature new scholarship in the field, on topics such as the integral position of Anglo-Latin within Anglo-Saxon culture and literature, constructions of feminine strength and effectiveness in Anglo-Saxon literature, the rise of Latin-based learning in twelfth-century Iceland, medieval Icelandic religious poetry, and the conversion to Christianity in medieval Scandinavia. The essays in "Verbal Encounters" are not merely a fitting tribute to Roberta Frank, but also strong contributions to current scholarship on medieval literature and culture.

Nazi and Holocaust Representations in Anglo-American Popular Culture, 1945-2020
Nazi and Holocaust Representations in Anglo-American Popular Culture, 1945-2020: Irreverent Remembrance
English | 2021 | ISBN: 303079220X | 150 Pages | PDF EPUB | 16 MB
This book analyzes sensationalized Nazi and Holocaust representations in Anglo-American cultural and political discourses. Recognizing that this history is increasingly removed from contemporary life, it explains how irreverent representations can help rejuvenate the story for successive generations of new learners. Surveying seventy-five-years of transatlantic activities, the work erects counterposing categorizes of "constructive and destructive memorializing," providing scholars with a new framework for elucidating both this history and its historicization.
