E-BooksLanguage Acquisition and Academic Writing Theory and Practice of Effective Writing Instruction

Language Acquisition and Academic Writing Theory and Practice of Effective Writing Instruction
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1032358769 | 194 pages | True PDF EPUB | 9.42 MB
An important contribution to the scholarship on student writing and composition theory, this book presents a new approach to writing instruction based on linguistic research and theory. In this book, leading scholar James D. Williams explores the historical failures of composition studies and the need for effective writing instruction to be grounded in the immersive principles of language acquisition. Starting with an indictment of the historical failures of composition studies to teach students how to become competent writers, the book moves beyond the current flawed theories and practices to introduce a new way forward to improving students' writing skills. Accessible and jargon-free, Williams skillfully explains how students must be immersed in target dialects and registers, with access to a range of authentic texts, to become effective writers of academic discourse. Chapters include authentic writing samples from the disciplines, including life and applied sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Essential for preservice and practicing teachers of writing, as well as scholars in composition and literacy studies, the book demonstrates how language acquisition is a necessary foundation and provides a road map to improving students' writing proficiency.

English | PDF,EPUB | 2022 | 109 Pages | ISBN : 3031115023 | 2.2 MB
"The volume provides a welcome addition to the literature. It contributes through the reframing of support for English as an Additional language (EAL) international students through the lens of 'academic literacies'. This approach, and the vignettes throughout, show how institutions can develop in learners the practices required to 'communicate with confidence, clarity and care'. The result will be thought-provoking reading for practitioners in the field, as well as university policy developers, management and leadership."

E-BooksAcademic Capitalism Universities In The Global Struggle For Excellence

Academic Capitalism Universities In The Global Struggle For Excellence
Academic Capitalism: Universities In The Global Struggle For Excellence By Richard Münch
2014 | 317 Pages | ISBN: 0415840147 | PDF | 5 MB
This book investigates the intensifying struggle for excellence between universities in a globalized academic field. The rise of the entrepreneurial university and academic capitalism are superimposing themselves on the competition of scientists for progress of knowledge and recognition by the scientific community. The result is a sharpening institutional stratification of the field. This stratification is produced and continuously reproduced by the intensified struggle for funds with the shrinking of block grants and the growing significance of competitive funding, as well as the increasing impact of international and national rankings on academic research and teaching. The increased allocation of funds on the basis of performance leads to overinvestment of resources at the small top and underinvestment for the broad mass of universities in the middle and lower ranks. There is a curvilinear inverted u-shaped relationship of investments and returns in terms of knowledge production. Paradoxically, the intrusion of the economic logic and measures of managerial controlling into the academic field imply increasing inefficiency in the allocation of resources to universities. The top institutions suffer from overinvestment, the rank-and-file institutions from underinvestment. The economic inefficiency is accompanied by a shrinking potential for renewal and open knowledge evolution.

Academic Flying and the Means of Communication
Kristian Bjørkdahl, "Academic Flying and the Means of Communication"
English | ISBN: 9811649103 | 2022 | 386 pages | PDF | 6 MB
This open access book shines a light on how and why academic work became entwined with air travel, and what can be done to change academia's flying habit. The starting point of the book is that flying is only one means of scholarly communication among many, and that the state of the planet now obliges us to shift to other means. How can the academic-as-globetrotter become a thing of the past? The chapters in this book respond to this call in three steps. It documents the
