Free Download Sara Callahan, "Art + Archive: Understanding the archival turn in contemporary art "
English | ISBN: 1526156857 | 2022 | 348 pages | EPUB | 5 MB
Art + Archive provides an in-depth analysis of the connection between art and the archive at the turn of the twenty-first century. The book examines how the archive emerged in art writing in the mid-1990s and how its subsequent ubiquity can be understood in light of wider social, technological, philosophical and art-historical conditions and concerns. Deftly combining writing on archives from different disciplines with artistic practices, the book clarifies the function and meaning of one of the most persistent artworld buzzwords of recent years, shedding light on the conceptual and historical implications of the so-called archival turn in contemporary art.

E-BooksArithmetic Geometry

Arithmetic Geometry
Free Download Arithmetic Geometry by Gary Cornell, Joseph H. Silverman
English | PDF | 1986 | 359 Pages | ISBN : 0387963111 | 31.3 MB
This volume is the result of a (mainly) instructional conference on arithmetic geometry, held from July 30 through August 10, 1984 at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. This volume contains expanded versions of almost all the instructional lectures given during the conference. In addition to these expository lectures, this volume contains a translation into English of Falt ings' seminal paper which provided the inspiration for the conference. We thank Professor Faltings for his permission to publish the translation and Edward Shipz who did the translation. We thank all the people who spoke at the Storrs conference, both for helping to make it a successful meeting and enabling us to publish this volume. We would especially like to thank David Rohrlich, who delivered the lectures on height functions (Chapter VI) when the second editor was unavoidably detained. In addition to the editors, Michael Artin and John Tate served on the organizing committee for the conference and much of the success of the conference was due to them-our thanks go to them for their assistance. Finally, the conference was only made possible through generous grants from the Vaughn Foundation and the National Science Foundation.

E-BooksArena The Story of the Colosseum

Arena The Story of the Colosseum
Free Download Arena: The Story of the Colosseum By John Pearson
2011 | 192 Pages | ISBN: 1448207991 | EPUB | 3 MB
This electronic edition published in 2011 by Bloomsbury Reader. In the year AD 80 the Colosseum opened with quite the longest and most nauseating organized mass orgy in history. It was a mammoth celebration on the grandest scale, a fitting inauguration for an arena built to epitomize all the majesty and power of the Roman Empire, a building which also held the seeds of that Empire's decay and destruction. As well as his vivid account of the erection of the Colosseum, Mr. Pearson discusses the origins of death spectacles and their evolution into highly organized games intended to enhance imperial prestige and provide the populace with an effective substitute for politics and war. 'Butchered to make a Roman holiday', the victims of this lust for slaughter were slaves and criminals, the human surplus of their day, coached for an almost certain death. One chapter highlights the perverted death-wish of many early would-be martyrs and decisively establishes that there is no evidence for the death of a single Christian martyr in the Colosseum. The book concludes with a brief survey of the building's subsequent history; looted and despoiled yet still the embodiment of Rome's spirit and greatness, it became a sublime romantic ruin, now exposed by slum-clearance as a gigantic traffic island. Mr Pearson is acutely aware of the violence that was endemic in Roman society, and in his shrewd analysis he draws disturbing parallels with the twentieth-century situation.

English | ISBN: 1735060011 | 2022 | 318 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
From "ARE YOU KIDDING?" "When telling the story of my teens to young gay men...the most common response I received was 'Are you kidding?'Your parents locked you out of their house because they found out you were gay? Are you kidding? You lost your job because you were gay? Are you kidding? You learned your HIV status from a form letter? Are you kidding? No, I'm not kidding. All that and more happened.Suddenly in answer to these reactions of incredulity, I realized I had a story to tell; something very old that was suddenly new again."ARE YOU KIDDING? is one gay man's humorous and mind-boggling remembrance of 70 years from Eisenhower to COVID-19, coming of age and coming to terms with his sexual identity, pursuing a show business career in the face of prejudice and homophobia, celebrating the sexual revolution, surviving the AIDS pandemic; substance abuse and depression, and witnessing the decline of the middle class. It is a hopeful look back across six decades from the hard-earned perspective of age and wisdom.

E-BooksAppropriate Behavior (Volume 4)

Appropriate Behavior (Volume 4)
Free Download Maria San Filippo, "Appropriate Behavior (Volume 4) "
English | ISBN: 0228014581 | 2022 | 176 pages | EPUB | 6 MB
Premiering at Sundance in 2014, Desiree Akhavan's acclaimed debut feature, Appropriate Behavior, introduced the indie film world to the deadpan, irreverent wit that had already won over fans of her trailblazing LGBTQ web series The Slope. The first volume in the Queer Film Classics series to spotlight a work by and about a bisexual woman of colour, this book explores Appropriate Behavior as an instant classic of US indie filmmaking in the 2010s, as a radical reappropriation of straight and gay film genres, as an artist's coming-of-age story, and as a model for feminist-queer creative collaboration. Less than a decade old, Appropriate Behavior captures an urban queer community imperilled by gentrification and homonormativity and serves as exemplar of an innovative wave of independent cinema not yet subsumed by the streaming economy. Maria San Filippo explores how filmmaker and film render a singular voice and story that queers not only its celebrated romcom predecessors but also the gay coming-out film and the lesbian romance alike. The book concludes with an interview with Akhavan.San Filippo pays special tribute to Akhavan's audacious sensibility and the "inbetweener" moxie that makes Appropriate Behavior an unparalleled portrayal of bisexuality.

Approaches to Metaphysics
Free Download Approaches to Metaphysics by William Sweet
English | PDF (True) | 2004 | 336 Pages | ISBN : 140202181X | 2.8 MB
Today, when systematic philosophy - and reason itself - are challenged both outside of and within philosophy, is it still possible to do metaphysics? This volume provides a broad perspective on contemporary approaches to the nature and the fundamental questions of metaphysics. Drawing on scholars from continental Europe, Asia, Canada, the United States, and Great Britain, and representing a variety of philosophical cultures and traditions, this volume surveys and extends work in metaphysics and its implications for broader philosophical concerns (e.g., in ethics and social philosophy, in mathematics and logic, and in epistemology). It also addresses such questions as the role of history and historicity in undertaking metaphysics, the nature of metaphysics, the priority of metaphysics over epistemology, and the challenges of empiricism and postmodernism.
