The illustrious Fortunes formed as a vocal trio - Rod Allen, Glen Dale & Barry Pritchard. Backed by instrumental crew The Cliftones, they released their first single in 1963, a cover of The Jamies' "Summertime, Summertime" backed with Pritchard's original "I Love Her Still" (both sides can be found here as bonus tracks). It flopped - the three Fortunes dropped The Cliftones and became a five piece with the addition of new members David Carr and Andy Brown. Their next single, "Caroline", may not have been a chart success, but was fondly loved as the theme song to Britain's first infamous pirate radio station, Radio Caroline. Trying once again, the lads released an excellent, Mersey-influenced two sider, "Come On Girl"/"I Like The Look Of You"and then another, "Look Homeward Angel". Despite the fantastic and harmonious sounds coming out of the grooves, still no chart action for The Fortunes. Fame and fortune (pun intended!) was found with their next 45, Greenaway & Cook's innovative "You've Got Your Troubles". "Troubles" launched them into the Top Five in England and Top Ten in America. An album was released to capitalize on the sudden success - and an excellent one at that - with readings of current hits by others like "Looking Through The Eyes of Love" and "All Cried Out", as well as top notch originals penned by outside writers - see "Won't You Give Him (One More Chance)" and "Laughing Fit To Cry" for examples of tracks that could have easily been A-Sides for the guys. Due to space constraints, we could not include "Maria" and "You Can Have Her" on this package. However, the rest of the album can be found on this disc. The album also included their next hit, "Here It Comes Again", going all the way to #4 in the UK and just making the Top 30 in America. "This Golden Ring" followed the same formula, and found favour with UK buyers. Further singles showed the group developing and maturing their sound, but record sales declined
