Hannah is based on the life story of Hannah Stanley, a convict woman who is sentenced to death for Grand Theft before her sentence is commuted to transportation for life to New South Wales.
She survives the brutality and filth of English prisons and the long six months in the convict ship Canada before arriving in Sydney Cove in September 1810.
After many adventures in the wilderness of the early colony, she raises a large family and takes a rightful place in the society of the new world.
She never agaiin saw the shores of England but learnt to love the beauty and the uniqueness of the Australian bush.

The historical novel Hannah is based on the real-life story of a young English woman who is convicted of Grand Theft and sentenced to death. Ultimately, the sentence was committed to transportation to Botany Bay in the colony of New South Wales in the year 1810. Writing Hannah was a labour of love as I have a special interest in Australia's early colonial history and the convict era. After I had done a lot of research and, throughout the writing of the novel which took nearly two years, I was amazed at the strength of this proud young woman in overcoming so many hard times . . .the fithy gaols and convict ships, the remoteness and loneliness in the Australian wilderness, the floods, fires, attacks by the natives and escaped convicts. She was a tough courageous woman but of course you had to be to raise twelve children in those times. I take my hat off to Hannah as I believe you will.
