E-BooksThe Event, the Subject, and the Artwork Into the Twenty–First Century

The Event, the Subject, and the Artwork Into the Twenty–First Century
Free Download Ann McCulloch, "The Event, the Subject, and the Artwork: Into the Twenty-First Century"
English | ISBN: 1443870692 | 2015 | 240 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Partly guided by Alain Badiou's controversial Century and its interpretation of the events and art of the last century, this book opens debates about these for the twenty-first century. This book examines the extent to which such debates can be applied to the first decades of the twenty-first century and the extent to which analyses of events and subjectivities in the twentieth century can be re-thought from the perspective of this century. This book is also partly guided by Gilles Deleuze's construal of the event as a synthesis of forces, not a happening, but something that has become actual. An event, therefore, is always there in its potentiality, but may not be recognized at the time of its occurrence. This collection combines essays responding to seemingly datable events, such as the memorialised city of Hiroshima, the coup d'etat in Fiji, or the aftermath of Vietnam, as well as the more pervasive emergence of managerialism and the anti-psychiatry movement. At the same time, this book specifically explores the event's relationship with art and its subject in the sense of both what and who is depicted. The collection engages in debates over the extent to which modernism is an unfinished event; avant-garde moments herald events; socio-political events are mediated in and by artworks; and artistic responses to events and subjects come to represent temporal ruptures and rifts, if not harbingers of an indescribable future.

English | 2006 | pages: 414 | ISBN: 1584561904, 0712349200 | PDF | 41,4 mb
First edition, first printing. Published to mark the centenary of the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association, this is the first book to map out the history of the rare book trade in the 20th century - the end of this period broadly coinciding with the end of an era in traditional bookselling and the arrival of the Internet. Twenty contributors describe and explain the ways in which booksellers acquired their stock and sold books to customers, bringing to life the personalities in this most individualistic of trades, and offer many insights into changes in taste and fashion in book collecting, during what was also a formative period for many of the world's most important research libraries, especially in North America. Bibliographical scholars write alongside well-known experts from the book trade itself, drawing on a wide range of sources, including unpublished archives, marked sets of catalogues and the memoirs published and unpublished of members of the antiquarian book trade itself. The book contains reproductions of many period photographs and several useful reference aids, including a survey of book trade archives, a checklist of memoirs, and three indexes. The book will appeal to historians of the book, and of 20th-century cultural and intellectual life, as well as to everyone interested in the world of buying and selling rare books, either as booksellers themselves or as readers and collectors. Jacket chipped; back cover has a worn area. 414 pages. Hardcover, dust jacket. 6.75 x 9.5 inches.

E-BooksInterventions Into Modernist Cultures Poetry From Beyond the Empty Screen

Interventions Into Modernist Cultures Poetry From Beyond the Empty Screen
Free Download Interventions Into Modernist Cultures: Poetry From Beyond the Empty Screen By Amie Elizabeth Parry
2007 | 202 Pages | ISBN: 0822338181 | PDF | 20 MB
Interventions into Modernist Cultures is a comparative analysis of the cultural politics of modernist writing in the United States and Taiwan. Amie Elizabeth Parry argues that the two sites of modernism are linked by their representation or suppression of histories of U.S. imperialist expansion, Cold War neocolonial military presence, and economic influence in Asia. Focusing on poetry, a genre often overlooked in postcolonial theory, she contends that the radically fragmented form of modernist poetic texts is particularly well suited to representing U.S. imperialism and neocolonial modernities.Reading various works by U.S. expatriates Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein, Parry compares the cultural politics of U.S. canonical modernism with alternative representations of temporality, hybridity, erasure, and sexuality in the work of the Taiwanese writers Yü Kwang-chung and Hsia Yü and the Asian American immigrant author Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. Juxtaposing poems by Pound and Yü Kwang-chung, Parry shows how Yü's fragmented, ambivalent modernist form reveals the effects of neocolonialism while Pound denies and obscures U.S. imperialism in Asia, asserting a form of nondevelopmental universalism through both form and theme. Stein appropriates discourses of American modernity and identity to represent nonnormative desire and sexuality, and Parry contrasts this tendency with representations of sexuality in the contemporary experimental poetry of Hsia Yü. Finally, Parry highlights the different uses of modernist forms by Pound in his Cantos-which incorporate a multiplicity of decontextualized and ahistorical voices-and by Cha in her 1982 novel Dictee, a historicized, multilingual work. Parry's sophisticated readings provide a useful critical framework for apprehending how "minor modernisms" illuminate the histories erased by certain canonical modernist texts.
