Border-Crossing and Comedy at the Théâtre Italien, 1716-1723
Border-Crossing and Comedy at the Théâtre Italien, 1716-1723 By Matthew J. McMahan
2021 | 279 Pages | ISBN: 3030700704 | PDF | 5 MB
How do nationalized stereotypes inform the reception and content of the migrant comedian's work? How do performers adapt? What gets lost (and found) in translation?Border-Crossing and Comedy at the Théâtre Italien, 1716-1723explores these questions in an early modern context. When a troupe of commedia dell'arte actors were invited by the French crown to establish a theatre in Paris, they found their transition was anything but easy. They had to learn a new language and adjust to French expectations and demands. This study presents their story as a dynamic model of coping with the challenges of migration, whereby the actors made their transnational identity a central focus of their comedy. Relating their work to popular twenty-first century comedians, this book also discusses the tools and ideas that contextualize the border-crossing comedian's work―including diplomacy, translation, improvisation, and parody―across time.

E-BooksBorder Culture Theory, Imagination, Geopolitics

Border Culture Theory, Imagination, Geopolitics
English | 2022 | ISBN: 1032294116 | 298 pages | True PDF | 29.21 MB
This book introduces readers to the cultural imaginings of borders: the in-between spaces in which transnationalism collides with geopolitical cooperation and contestation.
Recent debates about the "refugee crisis" and the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic have politicized culture at and of borders like never before. Border culture is no longer culture at the margins but rather culture at the heart of geopolitics, flows, and experience of the transnational world. Increasingly, culture and borders are everywhere yet nowhere. In border spaces, national narratives and counter-narratives are tested and evaluated, coming up against transnational culture. This book provides an extensive and critical vision of border culture on the move, drawing on numerous examples worldwide and a growing international literature across border and cultural studies. It shows how border culture develops in the human imagination and manifests in human constructs of "nation" and "state", as well as in transnationalism. By analyzing this new and expanding cultural geography of border landscapes, the book shows the way to a fresh, broader dialogue.

E-BooksGoverning Cross-Border Higher Education

Governing Cross-Border Higher Education
Governing Cross-Border Higher Education By Christopher Ziguras, Grant McBurnie
2014 | 218 Pages | ISBN: 0415734878 | PDF | 2 MB
Governing Cross-Border Higher Education examines the role of governments in relation to three key aspects of international education: student mobility; migration of international students; and transnational provision through collaboration or branch campuses. The research for this book is informed by interviews with key stakeholders in ten countries and extensive engagement with policy makers and international agencies. It analyses the ways in which governments are able to direct or at least influence these cross-border movements in higher education. The book explores key issues that national governments are invariably required to contend with in an increasingly globalised higher education market, as well as the policy options available to them in such a climate. Alongside this, there is analysis into why states adopt particular approaches, with critical assessment of their varying success. Key topics include: the political economy of international higher education;recruiting students;promoting and regulating transnational provision; student migration;governing educational imports; managing the outflow of students; the regulated market. This book will be a valuable and insightful resource for those involved in higher education policy and interested in the globalisation of the higher education market.

E-BooksA Psychotherapist Paints Insights from the Border of Art and Psychotherapy

A Psychotherapist Paints Insights from the Border of Art and Psychotherapy
A Psychotherapist Paints: Insights from the Border of Art and Psychotherapy
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1032140771 | 226 Pages | PDF (True) | 107 MB
This book describes a body of painting that was responsive to a major existential challenge, the COVID-19 pandemic, but which also comes from deeply personal experience; the paintings are a mirror of life through the decades. These paintings, fifty of which are included here in full colour, were mainly presented online to groups both small and large, who were invited to participate in a dialogue that became a vital part of the developing project. The value of this dialogue is reflected in the author's concept of the "artist's matrix", describing the social context in which an artist produces and presents their work. The paintings, together with the autobiographical narrative and the groups' generativity, combine to produce a moving testament to our times.

E-BooksArctic governance Power in cross-border cooperation

Arctic governance Power in cross-border cooperation
Elana Wilson Rowe, "Arctic governance: Power in cross-border cooperation"
English | ISBN: 1526121735 | 2018 | 176 pages | EPUB | 1377 KB
The volume explores a question that sheds light on the contested, but largely cooperative, nature of Arctic governance in the post-Cold War period: How does power matter -and how has it mattered - in shaping cross-border cooperation and diplomacy in the Arctic? The role of power in global governance cooperation has been explored in international relations and political geography literature, yet largely overlooked in an Arctic context. Through carefully selected case studies - from Russia's role in the Arctic Council to the diplomacy of indigenous peoples' organizations - this book seeks to shed light on how power performances are enacted to constantly shore up Arctic cooperation in key ways. The conceptually-driven nature of the inquiry makes the book appropriate reading for courses in international relations and political geography, while the carefully selected case studies lend themselves to courses on Arctic politics.

In the summer of 2020, China and India came near to war. The nuclear-armed adversaries both massed troops and equipment along their disputed border in eastern Ladakh. The two sides slugged it out with fists, stones and clubs, next to a fast-flowing Himalayan stream, resulting in dozens of deaths and injuries, many from hypothermia.

E-BooksDictators as Gatekeepers Outsourcing EU border controls to Africa

Dictators as Gatekeepers Outsourcing EU border controls to Africa
Christian Jakob, "Dictators as Gatekeepers: Outsourcing EU border controls to Africa"
English | ISBN: 1988832276 | 2019 | 270 pages | EPUB | 956 KB
The USA is divided around the wall President Trump wants to build along the Mexican border. Europe has long answered this question at its own southern border: put up that wall but don't make it look like one. Today the EU is trying to close many deals as it can with African states, making it harder and harder for refugees to find protection and more dangerous for labor migrants to reach places where they can earn an income. But this is not the only effect: the more Europe tries to control migration from Africa, the harder it becomes for many Africans to move freely through their own continent, even within their own countries. Increasingly, the billions Europe pays for migration control is declared as official development assistance (ODA), more widely known as 'development aid, supposedly for poverty relief and humanitarian assistance. The EU is spending billions buying African leaders as gatekeepers, including dictators and suspected war criminals. And the real beneficiaries are the military and technology corporations involved in the implementation.

Region-Making and Cross-Border Cooperation New Evidence from Four Continents
Elisabetta Nadalutti, "Region-Making and Cross-Border Cooperation: New Evidence from Four Continents "
English | ISBN: 1138719072 | 2018 | 182 pages | EPUB | 840 KB
This book explores the nature of regions and how they function, particularly at the local and micro-level. Whilst recent years have seen a resurgence in debates around the roles which regions can play in development, the focus has tended to be on 'macro' regional institutions such as the EU, ASEAN, ECOWAS or MERCOSUR. In contrast, this book offers a nuanced analysis of the important field of sub-regionalism and sub-national cross-border cooperation.
