In this filmmaking class, Karl explains colour temperature and shows you how to adjust your camera settings to achieve the right colour temperature in your videos. Beginning by explaining colour temperature and the Kelvin scale on which it is measured, Karl illustrates the difference between cold (blue), neutral (white) and warm (orange) light. He then shows you how to adjust the White (or Colour) Balance setting on your camera to suit (and, if necessary, neutralise) the colour temperature of the light on set.

When it comes to photographing the night sky, one of the main challenges is calculating your exposure and timings. In this photography class, Karl shows you how to photograph the night sky. He explains how to expose the image, how he frames the shot beforehand and also how to avoid camera shake during long exposures. He also shares some useful tips for adding subtle amounts of light that can enhance your image.

We've often been asked to produce a class on how to shoot food in its packaging. With this live workshop, we meet that demand! And now you can watch the replay. Shooting food products in their packaging can present various problems, especially when you're working with glossy, high-shine surfaces. In this workshop, Karl explains the simple physics you need to understand in order to solve those problems. You'll learn how to use a softbox as a background, how to create a pure white background and base, and how to use polarising filters and films to remove unwanted reflections. The techniques demonstrated here are useful for all photographers, especially those with an interest in product, packshot, and e-commerce photography. Other classes that Karl refers to in this workshop include Angles of Incidence and Reflection and Polarising Light in Studio Photography.

Getting white-on-white right can be tricky. In this live photography workshop, now available to watch as a replay, Karl identifies the main challenges and demonstrates simple techniques for overcoming them. He begins by explaining 'pure white' and how it is identified in the RGB decimal code. This magic number becomes crucial later as he works to separate white subject from white background. He also discusses matt and gloss surfaces and the different ways they reflect light. As he lights a white jacket on a mannequin, Karl shows how to use flags to prevent background light spilling onto the subject. Lighting the jacket itself, he shows the dangers of over-exposure, and how to use flagging and feathering to get the right lighting ratio to make the subject stand out from the background. Moving on to a white teacup and saucer, the challenges of shooting a glossy product become clear. Karl explains how image-forming reflections work and why they cause the edges of glossy products to become indistinguishable from. Then he demonstrates an ingeniously simple DIY fix.

Compared with studio lights, speedlights are more affordable and more portable. But getting high-quality results out of them typically also requires more effort, as Karl proves in this live photoshoot, now available to watch as a replay. Setting himself quite a challenge, Karl limits himself to three speedlights as he photographs two paintbrushes with paint dripping off them, plus a tin of paint in the background. In this video, you'll learn how to use speedlights for product photography, including how to achieve gradient lighting by using a homemade scrim, mirrors, and white reflectors. You'll also see Karl apply his understanding of angles of incidence and reflection to position his lights correctly. As he works, he answers audience questions about scrim placement, the benefits of using a histogram, why he opted for a black background rather than a white one, and more. He wraps up the show with some quick post-production to polish up the final shot. This class is a great lesson in the importance of modifying and controlling light, regardless of the source. As Karl explains, light is light – it's what you do with that matters.

In this LIVE photography workshop, now available to watch as a replay, Karl answers a question posed by many of our members over the years: how do I take effective portraits of people wearing glasses? The primary challenge is, of course, how to achieve satisfactory illumination of the subject's face while avoiding distracting reflections from the lenses. In this workshop, Karl shows you how. He begins by introducing the key laws of physics that dictate how light works. He also addresses common solutions to the problem (including removing the lenses and using a polarising filter) and explains why they are not the best approaches. You'll see Karl demonstrate a simple three-light setup. He experiments with softboxes and a beauty dish, and shows you how to use a triflector to ease shadows under the chin. Most importantly, he demonstrates the importance of understanding angles of incidence and reflection, and how the position and intensity of your key light source makes all the difference. The result is a series of high-quality, business-style portraits of subjects wearing glasses, with no glaring reflections in the lenses.
