E-BooksAction Reconceptualized Human Agency and Its Sources

Action Reconceptualized Human Agency and Its Sources
Free Download David K. Chan, "Action Reconceptualized: Human Agency and Its Sources"
English | ISBN: 1498519644 | 2016 | 230 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
The concept of action that requires philosophical analysis is one that concerns behavior characteristically found in humans. In Action Reconceptualized: Human Agency and Its Sources, David K. Chan examines the sources of human agency that are proposed in causal theories of action-namely desire, intention, and trying-and distinguishes them from each other in terms of their roles in practical reasoning and motivation. He conceptualizes them in relation to each other in a way that is consistent and useful for answering a number of questions that are central to the philosophy of action. The action theory in this book addresses the need to understand human agency for its own sake, but it also serves another purpose. When the philosopher Elizabeth Anscombe stressed the need to do philosophy of action before doing ethical theory, what she meant was that moral philosophers should first work out a proper account of the relationship between the inner states of a person and the actions that she performs. This book provides such an account, and makes the case that it is desire, rather than intention, that is the basis for the ethical evaluation of an agent. Action Reconceptualized will be of particular interest to students and scholars doing research in action theory and ethics, as well as to those working outside of philosophy in psychology and cognitive science.

E-BooksModernity and its Futures Past Recovering Unalienated Life

Modernity and its Futures Past Recovering Unalienated Life
Free Download Modernity and its Futures Past: Recovering Unalienated Life
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031321065 | 697 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 4 MB
The work reimagines emancipatory possibilities in the face of reified capitalist modernity. The enlightenment resulted in a 'disenchanted' world, stripped of 'anthropomorphised' meaning and purpose. This world, in its capitalistic figuration, alienates us from others, and from nature. To rearticulate emancipatory possibilities requires a non-alienated relation to society and nature. Yet, modernist disenchantment cannot be undone by returning to pre-modern 'enchantment'. Rather, such rearticulation calls for the recovery of 'unalienated life' from within non-reified modernity, by renewing its universalist dimension.

Bitter Harvest Zimbabwe and the Aftermath of its Independence
Free Download Ian Smith, "Bitter Harvest: Zimbabwe and the Aftermath of its Independence"
English | 2008 | pages: 465 | ISBN: 1857826043 | PDF | 2,8 mb
For more than a decade, Ian Smith served as Rhodesia's Prime Minister during the era of white minority rule. Following his death in 2007, he is still a man with the ability to excite powerful emotions. To some he is a leader whose formidable integrity led him into head-to-head confrontation with the Labor government of Britain in the 1960s. To others he is a demon best known for stating "I don't believe in black majority rule ever, not in a thousand years," for staunchly opposing Britain's insistence that majority rule be implemented before the nation's independence, and for imprisoning the leadership of the newly emerged black nationalist movement. In this revealing autobiography, Smith tells his own side of the story and reveals how he sought to keep Rhodesia on a path to full democracy during the West's decolonization of Africa. He tells the remarkable story behind the signing of the country's Unilateral Declaration of Independence and addresses the excesses of power that the current president, Robert Mugabe, has used to create the virtual dictatorship which exists in Zimbabwe today. This is a revealing and prescient historical document from a controversial figure charting the rise and fall of a once-great nation.
