E-BooksThe New Zealand Wars and the Victorian Interpretation of Racial Conflict

The New Zealand Wars and the Victorian Interpretation of Racial Conflict
James Belich, "The New Zealand Wars and the Victorian Interpretation of Racial Conflict"
English | ISBN: 1869408276 | 2015 | 400 pages | PDF | 8 MB
First published in 1986, James Belich's groundbreaking book and the television series based upon it transformed New Zealanders' understanding of the 'bitter and bloody struggles' between Mori and Pkeh in the nineteenth century.Revealing the enormous tactical and military skill of Mori, and the inability of the 'Victorian interpretation of racial conflict' to acknowledge those qualities, Belich's account of the New Zealand Wars offered a very different picture from the one previously given in historical works. Mori, in Belich's view, won the Northern War and stalemated the British in the Taranaki War of 1860-61 only to be defeated by 18,000 British troops in the Waikato War of 1863-64.The secret of effective Mori resistance was an innovative military system, the modern p, a trench-and-bunker fortification of a sophistication not achieved in Europe until 1915. According to the author: 'The degree of Maori success in all four major wars is still underestimated - even to the point where, in the case of one war, the wrong side is said to have won.'This bestselling classic of New Zealand history is a must-read - and Belich's larger argument about the impact of historical interpretation resonates today.

E-BooksRealistic Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics

Realistic Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics
English | 2022 | ISBN: 1527579743, 978-1527579743 | 340 pages | True PDF | 2.86 MB
According to Einstein "a physical theory should offer a picture of reality". This made him frustrated and dissatisfied with the standard interpretation (or lack thereof) of quantum theory, since attempts to get a "picture" from it soon led to contradictions like the wave-particle duality. This book provides such a picture of the quantum world, that is, a "realistic interpretation". Of course, this needs to be done in a way that is compatible with today's experimental evidence, including the experiments that seem to contradict (local) realism. The book also offers a personal view on the meaning of general relativity and its relation with quantum mechanics, proposing a new perspective for dark energy, dark matter and stellar collapse. It is the result and a summary of the author's extensive research on the foundations of quantum mechanics, spanning more than 50 years.

E-BooksStatutory and Common Law Interpretation

Statutory and Common Law Interpretation
Statutory and Common Law Interpretation By Kent Greenawalt
2012 | 408 Pages | ISBN: 0199756147 | EPUB | 1 MB
As Kent Greenwalt's second volume on aspects of legal interpretation, this book analyzes statutory and common law interpretation and compares the two. In respect to statutory interpretation, it first asks whether judges are "faithful agents" of the legislature or "independent cooperative partners." It concludes that the obvious answer is that neither simple categorization really fits-that the function of judges involves a combination of roles. The next issue addressed is whether the intent of those in authority matters for interpreting the kinds of instructions contained in statutes. At the general level, the answer is "yes." This answer follows even if one thinks interpretation should concentrate on the understanding of readers, because readers themselves would treat intentions as part of the relevant context of the language of statutes. It would take some special reasons, such as constitutional structure or unreliability, to discount actual intents of legislators and use of legislative history. The book argues that none of these special reasons are convincing. On the question whether judges should focus on the language of specific provision or overall purpose, both are relevant, and purpose should become more important as time passes. In an analysis of various other features of statutory interpretation, the book claims that presidential signing statements should not have weight, that subsequent legislative actions short of new statutes should only occasionally carry importance, that "canons of interpretation," such as the rule of lenity, can provide some, limited, guidance, and that there are special reasons for courts to adhere to precedents in statutory cases, but these should not yield any absolute rule. A chapter on administrative interpretation of statutes claims that the standards agencies apply should differ to a degree from those of courts and that judicial deference to those interpretations is ordinarily warranted. The book's second part, on common law interpretation, considers the force of precedents, resisting any simple dichotomy between holding and dictum. It also defends the use of reasoning by analogy, not only in the initial stages thinking about a problem, but also in respect to some final justifications for decisions. An examination of the place of rules, principles, and policies argues that all three are relevant in common law interpretation; and shows that common law interpretation is not reducible to any formula. A final chapter compares statutory and common law interpretation, similarities and differences, how each can affect the other, and the significance of having a legal system in which they both play prominent roles.

E-BooksPhilosophy and the Interpretation of Quantum Physics

Philosophy and the Interpretation of Quantum Physics
English | 2021 | ISBN: 0750325984 , 978-0750325981 | 196 pages | True PDF | 10.3 MB
Quantum mechanics is perhaps the greatest scientific breakthrough ever achieved. It brought with it a seismic paradigm shift in our way of thinking about nature, and at the same time, it underpins most of the dramatic technological innovations of the modern era, as well as providing a profound lasting impact on our metaphysical conception of reality. This book provides oversight of many views on the interpretation of quantum physics and the wide philosophical debate that still embroils this subject. Following an introduction to quantum mechanics according to the Copenhagen interpretation and the many-worlds formalism, the reader is taken on a journey exploring the many physical results and theorems of quantum philosophy with an emphasis on quantum entanglement and Bell's theorem before proceeding to explore Hawking radiation and the corresponding information loss problem and its unitary resolution and the connection between spacetime geometry and quantum entanglement. The book then explores the issues of time and consciousness as both are intimately related to the foundation of quantum mechanics and concludes with a synthesis based on quantum dualism, i.e. the fact that the Copenhagen interpretation provides the local view of reality whereas the many-worlds formalism provides the manifold view and the two views are complementary, not contradictory.
