E-BooksIndigenous Sovereignty and the Democratic Project

Indigenous Sovereignty and the Democratic Project
Steven Curry, "Indigenous Sovereignty and the Democratic Project "
English | ISBN: 1138258326 | 2020 | 192 pages | PDF | 5 MB
Liberal democracies are predicated on popular sovereignty - the ideal of government for and by the People. Throughout the developed world indigenous peoples continue to deny legitimacy to otherwise popular governments because their consent has never been sought. Using examples from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA, this book tackles the problem of democratic legitimation from the perspective of indigenous peoples, arguing that having suffered conquest, these people cannot be said to consent until conditions for their consent have been realised. These conditions include constitutional change that recognizes indigenous law as the 'law of the land' - a radical proposal going far beyond the current limits of self-determination.

E-BooksCauca's Indigenous Movement in Southwestern Colombia Land, Violence, and Ethnic Identity

Cauca's Indigenous Movement in Southwestern Colombia Land, Violence, and Ethnic Identity
Brett Troyan, "Cauca's Indigenous Movement in Southwestern Colombia: Land, Violence, and Ethnic Identity"
English | 2015 | pages: 220 | ISBN: 1498502288 | PDF | 1,4 mb
Cauca's Indigenous Movement in Southwestern Colombia: Land, Violence, and Ethnic Identity provides a vivid account of how the indigenous communities of Cauca in southwestern Colombia engaged with the Colombian central state. Troyan begins with the question of how 3.4 percent of the Colombian population obtained legal rights to close to a quarter of the national territory. Her in-depth study of the correspondence between the central state and indigenous communities of Cauca reveals that the nation state played a key role in the legitimization of land claims based on ethnic identity. Starting with the indigenous movement led by Manuel QuintĂn Lame in 1914, this book shows how, in contrast to the local authorities of Cauca, the central state adopted a more sympathetic albeit contradictory approach to indigenous communities' grievances throughout the twentieth century. Land, Violence, and Cauca's Indigenous Movement in Southwestern Colombia presents an examination of state initiatives in the 1930s, 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s toward indigenous communities in Cauca, which sheds light on the political and social construction of Colombian indigenous identity. Troyan also reveals how violence and the representation of violence shaped the conversations between the central state and indigenous communities of Cauca; the central state's inability to exert a monopoly on violence, Troyan argues, places indigenous communities and their leaders in jeopardy despite the discursive legitimization of land claims based on ethnic identity.

E-BooksCivilian-Driven Violence and the Genocide of Indigenous Peoples in Settler Societies

Civilian-Driven Violence and the Genocide of Indigenous Peoples in Settler Societies
Mohamed Adhikari, "Civilian-Driven Violence and the Genocide of Indigenous Peoples in Settler Societies"
English | ISBN: 0367858916 | 2021 | 344 pages | EPUB | 1169 KB
Existing studies of settler colonial genocides explicitly consider the roles of metropolitan and colonial states, and their military forces in the perpetration of exterminatory violence in settler colonial situations, yet rarely pay specific attention to the dynamics around civilian-driven mass violence against indigenous peoples. In many cases, however, civilians were major, if not the main, perpetrators of such violence. The focus of this book is thus on the role of civilians as perpetrators of exterminatory violence and on those elements within settler colonial situations that promoted mass violence on their part.

Restructuring Relations Indigenous Self-Determination, Governance, and Gender
Rauna Kuokkanen, "Restructuring Relations: Indigenous Self-Determination, Governance, and Gender"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 0190913282 | PDF | pages: 385 | 2.9 mb
Adopted in 2007, the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples establishes self-determination-including free, prior, and informed consent-as a foundational right and principle. Self-determination, both individual and collective, is among the most important and pressing issues for Indigenous women worldwide. Yet Indigenous women's interests have been overlooked in the formulation of Indigenous self-government, and existing studies of Indigenous self-government largely ignore issues of gender. As such, the current literature on Indigenous governance conceals patriarchal structures and power that create barriers for women to resources and participation in Indigenous societies.

The Routledge Handbook of Indigenous Development

This Handbook inverts the lens on development, asking what Indigenous communities across the globe hope and build for themselves. In contrast to earlier writing on development, this volume focuses on Indigenous peoples as inspiring theorists and potent political actors who resist the ongoing destruction of their livelihoods. To foster their own visions of development, they look from the present back to Indigenous pasts and forward to Indigenous futures.

Reimagining History from an Indigenous Perspective The Graphic Work of Floyd Solomon
English | 2022 | ISBN: 0826364098 | 120 pages | True EPUB | 10.53 MB
Few contemporary artists before the 1990s explored the negative impact of the Spanish in the Southwest, but unreflective celebrations of the Columbus Quincentennial brought about portrayals of a more complicated legacy of Columbus's arrival in the Americas—especially by Indigenous artists. Through a series of etchings, Floyd Solomon of Laguna and Zuni heritage undertook a visual recounting of Pueblo history using Indigenous knowledge positioned to reimagine a history that is known largely from non-Native records. While Solomon originally envisioned more than forty etchings, he ultimately completed just twenty. From nightmarish visions of the Spanish that preceded their arrival to the subsequent return of the Spanish and their continuing effects on the Pueblo people, Solomon provides a powerful visual record. These insightful, probing etchings are included in this important full-color volume showcasing Solomon's work and legacy. In Reimagining History from an Indigenous...
