New Perspectives on the Greek War of Independence Myths, Realities, Legacies and Reflections
Yianni Cartledge, "New Perspectives on the Greek War of Independence: Myths, Realities, Legacies and Reflections"
English | ISBN: 3031108485 | 2022 | 379 pages | PDF | 9 MB
This book marks the 200-year anniversary of uprisings in the Ottoman Balkans between February and March 1821, which became known in the West as the beginnings of the Greek War of Independence (1821-1832), and led to the formation of the modern Greek state. It explores the war and its impact on societies involved by delving into the myths that surround it, the realities that have often been ignored or suppressed, and its lasting legacies on national identities and histories. It also explores memory and commemoration in Greece, in other countries impacted, and the Greek diaspora. This book offers a fresh perspective on this pivotal event in Greek, Ottoman, Balkan, Mediterranean, European, and world histories. It presents new research and reflections to connect the war to wider history and to understand its importance across the last 200 years.

Jack D. Noe, "Contesting Commemoration: The 1876 Centennial, Independence Day, and the Reconstruction-Era South "
English | ISBN: 0807175587 | 2021 | 244 pages | EPUB | 369 KB
In Contesting Commemoration: The 1876 Centennial, Independence Day, and the Reconstruction-Era South, Jack Noe examines identity and nationalism in the post-Civil War South through the lens of commemorative activity, namely Independence Day celebrations and the Centennial of 1876. Both events presented opportunities for whites, Blacks, northerners, and southerners to reflect on their identity as Americans. The often colorful and engaging discourse surrounding these observances provides a fascinating portrait of this fractured moment in the development of American nationalism.

E-BooksThe Independence of the Judiciary in Bangladesh Exploring the Gap Between Theory and Practice

The Independence of the Judiciary in Bangladesh Exploring the Gap Between Theory and Practice
The Independence of the Judiciary in Bangladesh: Exploring the Gap Between Theory and Practice By M. Ehteshamul Bari
2021 | 198 Pages | ISBN: 9811662215 | PDF | 3 MB
This book highlights that an independent judiciary is indispensable for the very existence of any society based on democratic values, such as the observance of the rule of law and respect for the human rights of individuals. In order to ensure that the judiciary's interpretation of the law is not bound by the will of the executive and that it is able to call the executive to account by protecting the life as well as liberty of the governed, it is imperative to guarantee, among other things, a transparent method of appointment and the security of tenure of the judges. Taking into account the importance of an independent judiciary in a democratic society, the framers of the Constitution of Bangladesh, 1972, following in the footsteps of the framers of the Constitutions of India and Pakistan, incorporated in the Constitution the ideal of safeguarding the independence of the judiciary as one of its basic features. This book, however, makes it manifestly evident that the key elements for realising such an ideal have not adequately been guaranteed by the Constitution. Consequently, this book sheds light on how succeeding generations of executives have sought to undermine the independence of the judiciary. Accordingly, this book puts forward recommendations for the insertion of detailed norms in the Constitution of Bangladesh for establishing the best means for excluding patronage appointments to the bench and for guaranteeing the security of tenure of the judges. This book asserts that the incorporation of such norms, safeguards the independence of the superior judiciary to decide cases without fear or favour. This book, therefore, seeks to address the gap that exists between the theory and practice concerning the independence of the judiciary in Bangladesh. Since no book is currently available in the market that critically examines these issues in a systematic and structured manner, this research enhances knowledge by not only identifying the flaws, deficiencies and lacunae of the constitutional provisions concerning the method of appointment of the judges of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh but also the measures undertaken by the current Bangladeshi regime to dispense with the transparent method of removal of the judges involving a body of judicial character.

India Since Independence
Ananth V. Krishna, "India Since Independence"
English | 2010 | pages: 462 | ISBN: 8131725677, 813173465X | PDF | 5,8 mb
India Since Independence: Making Sense of Indian Politics is a comprehensive account of India's post-independence political history. It traces the development of the various political parties in India and places the current political scenario in a historical context. Beginning with a brief review of the intellectual tradition in India in the nineteenth century, it discusses the emergence of Mahatma Gandhi on the national political scene and the role of Indian capitalists in the freedom struggle. With a description of the predominance of the Congress party in the political discourse during the first few decades after independence, the narrative delves deep into the affairs of the party to include the rise of Indira Gandhi, the Congress split of 1969, and the infamous Emergency of 1975. The book then proceeds to the factors that caused the decline of the Congress party, and the formation and the demise of the Janata Party. It also covers political crises manifesting in the unrest in Assam, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir; the emergence of regional political parties in various states; the Bofors scandal; and the Ayodhya campaign.
