English | ISBN: 0415719526 | 2015 | 144 pages | PDF | 1068 KB
Bullying in schools has become the focus of a growing body of literature; however, much of that work diminishes the role of social context, social identities, and prejudices despite extensive research evidence suggesting that many victims of bullying are targeted because of an aspect of their social identity. This book demonstrates how the prevention and intervention of this phenomenon, termed identity-based bullying, is a social justice issue.

E-BooksArchitecture of Minoan Crete Constructing Identity in the Aegean Bronze Age

Architecture of Minoan Crete Constructing Identity in the Aegean Bronze Age
Free Download John C. McEnroe, "Architecture of Minoan Crete: Constructing Identity in the Aegean Bronze Age"
English | 2010 | pages: 220 | ISBN: 0292760914, 0292721935 | EPUB | 28,0 mb
Ever since Sir Arthur Evans first excavated at the site of the Palace at Knossos in the early twentieth century, scholars and visitors have been drawn to the architecture of Bronze Age Crete. Much of the attraction comes from the geographical and historical uniqueness of the island. Equidistant from Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, Minoan Crete is on the shifting conceptual border between East and West, and chronologically suspended between history and prehistory. In this culturally dynamic context, architecture provided more than physical shelter; it embodied meaning. Architecture was a medium through which Minoans constructed their notions of social, ethnic, and historical identity: the buildings tell us about how the Minoans saw themselves, and how they wanted to be seen by others.

English | 2009 | pages: 489 | ISBN: 0691141053, 0691125244 | PDF | 4,5 mb
The American musical has long provided an important vehicle through which writers, performers, and audiences reimagine who they are and how they might best interact with the world around them. Musicals are especially good at this because they provide not only an opportunity for us to enact dramatic versions of alternative identities, but also the material for performing such alternatives in the real world, through songs and the characters and attitudes those songs project.

E-BooksRethinking School Bullying Dominance, Identity and School Culture

Rethinking School Bullying Dominance, Identity and School Culture
Free Download Ronald B. Jacobson, "Rethinking School Bullying: Dominance, Identity and School Culture "
English | ISBN: 0415636264 | 2012 | 162 pages | PDF | 1162 KB
This book takes a new angle on a much-studied phenomenon, focusing on the role of domination and identity construction, understanding and self-knowledge, moral transformation and the social community, systems of training and hierarchy used by schooling, and the role they play in bullying. Exploring typical narratives of value within schooling (i.e., who counts and who doesn't?), the volume shows how bullying might make sense to a student as a pathway of identity construction within such stories (discourses and practices taken up by schools). It suggests how we can "tell a new story" and create a new culture which might undermine, or close off, the allure of bullying as a "need-meeting" avenue for students within schools.

The increasing prominence of urban life during the Middle Ages is undoubtedly one of the more transcendental and multi-faceted aspects of this era, having an effect on rules and laws, hygiene, and economic organisation. This book brings together contributions from a wide range of scholars who adopt a new approach to medieval urban life, using health, the economy, and regulations and laws as frames of reference for gaining a greater understanding of this historical period. Through these vectors, interesting insights are provided into medieval housing, cures for diseases, the work of artisans and merchants, and the relationship between the town and the wider region in which it was located.

E-BooksThe Road to Democracy Taiwan's Pursuit of Identity

The Road to Democracy Taiwan's Pursuit of Identity
Free Download The Road to Democracy: Taiwan's Pursuit of Identity By Lee Teng-Hui
1999 | 240 Pages | ISBN: 4569606512 | PDF | 7 MB
If Taiwan is not a sovereign state, what is it? On an island about the size of the state of West Virginia, Taiwan's people have built a modern industrial democracy. Over the past decade they have produced "twin miracles" of economic development and political reform under the leadership of the author, President Lee Teng-hui of the Republic of China (ROC). President Lee's July 9, 1999 statement on the "special state-to-state relationship" took the world by surprise. As The Road to Democracy: Taiwan's Pursuit of Identity makes clear, however, that pronouncement in no way marked a sudden policy shift, much less a declaration of independence. The Nationalist government leader simply wanted to clarify the relationship and parity of the two sides of Taiwan Strait so that Peking (Beijing) and Taipei can proceed with negotiations on an equal footing. In reality, the People's Republic of China (PRC) has never controlled Taiwan, while the ROC relinquished its authority in the mainland after moving its capital to Taipei in 1949. Taiwan has 22 million people with their own elected government. Its per capita national income of over US$12,000 makes it one of the wealthiest countries in Asia today. Taiwan's economic performance consistently ranks among the top 10 percent in the world in terms of economic growth rate, total GNP, per capital income, science and technology, foreign trade volume, foreign exchange reserves, and capital exports. Yet it is not recognized as a sovereign state by most of the countries of the world, nor is it a member of the United Nations. The major themes in The Road to Democracy are woven around two key terms: Taiwan's "existence" and its "experience." Unless the Republic of China on Taiwan remains in existence, its hard-won democracy and economic prosperity could founder, with serious repercussions in Asia and the world. Hence the importance of its security policy based on the three pillars of American commitment to Taiwan's defense, the ROC's own military preparedness, and an effective pragmatic diplomacy. The "Taiwan Experience," on the other hand, describes the recent past and the economic, political, and social transformation the country achieved with President Lee as the architect. The author believes that the Taiwan Experience can serve as a model for other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including the PRC. China's reunification will be possible, he argues, not under Peking's one China formula, but only when the Chinese mainland has been transformed into a society as free and democratic as Taiwan is now. More than simply a political statement and argument for pragmatic diplomacy, this book is also an affirmation of Dr. Lee's love for the people and the land of Taiwan. Finally, it is a testament to his belief, supported by his Christian faith, in the ideals of democracy and freedom for all people. LEE TENG-HUI was born in 1923 in a rural community near Taipei, when Taiwan was under Japanese control. He did his undergraduate work in agricultural economics at Kyoto Imperial University and National Taiwan University, and his graduate studies at Iowa State University and Cornell University, receiving a Ph.D. in agricultural economics from the latter in 1968. After teaching at National Taiwan University and serving on government commissions as a specialist on farm policy, he began his political career in 1972, when he was appointed a minister without portfolio. He then served as mayor of Taipei (1978-81), governor of Taiwan province (1981-84), and vice president of the republic (1984-88). Upon the death of President Chiang Ching-kuo in January 1988, Dr. Lee took over the presidency, to which he was formally elected by the National Assembly in 1990. He was sworn in as the first popularly elected president in May 1996 under the revised ROC constitution. President Lee is a Christian and author of numerous books and article on economics, public policy, and religion.

E-BooksProfessional Identity Crisis Balancing the Internal and External Perception of Professional Image

Professional Identity Crisis Balancing the Internal and External Perception of Professional Image
Free Download Andrea Tomo, "Professional Identity Crisis: Balancing the Internal and External Perception of Professional Image"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 1787698084 | PDF | pages: 169 | 1.0 mb
In a professional world that is quickly transforming and becoming increasingly volatile and uncertain, the nature of professional identity is complex and dynamic. The current literature has overlooked many issues concerning how professionals react and behave in the face of threats to their identity and image and there is a lack of a systemic analysis of the phenomenon of professional identity crisis. This book contends that a full comprehension of the dynamics taking place is now paramount from the individual perspective and provides a new theoretical and practical approach to the analysis and interpretation of these issues. Providing a novel understanding, the book delivers an empirical case to explore professionals' reactions in a context characterised by a sharp de-professionalisation pattern and ever-expanding regulation, uncertainty, and external pressures, which constrain and mould accountants' professional boundaries and activities. This book will prove a useful read to researchers across organisation studies, as well as interested professionals.
