Hellenic Whispers Modes of Greek Literary Influence in Seventeenth-Century French Drama (Medieval and Early Modern French Stud
Hellenic Whispers: Modes of Greek Literary Influence in Seventeenth-Century French Drama (Medieval and Early Modern French Studies) By Susanna Phillippo
2013 | 577 Pages | ISBN: 3034308515 | PDF | 4 MB
Hellenic Whispers builds a picture of how Greek literature was received and reworked by the authors of seventeenth-century French tragedy. Using case studies, the author establishes a new methodology for exploring the variety of responses and creative processes involved in these encounters with classical Greek material. The book explores the complex interactions surrounding these adaptations of Greek dramatic material, involving the input of scribes, editors, translators and earlier authors, and asks the important question of what these dramatists conceived of themselves as doing. Focusing on a time and place where cultural predilections and a lack of linguistic training made engagement with the original Greek texts problematic, the book explores the creative role of intermediary sources, the build-up of chain reactions between sources and the cumulative processes of recreation involved in the genesis of seventeenth-century dramatic texts. The volume also goes on to explore wider questions relevant to the classical tradition and issues of 'source study' and reception.

William D Furley, Jan M Bremer, "Greek Hymns: Selected Cult Songs from the Archaic to the Hellenistic Period + Greek texts and commentary (2 vols)"
English | 2001 | pages: 882 | ISBN: 3161475275, 3161475534 | PDF | 22,7 mb
The authors present a full survey of ancient Greek religious hymns which were sung either at religious services or in the literary contexts imitating such services. The emphasis is placed upon the edition of the Greek texts from 4th Century excavations at Delphi, Epidauros and Athens or those that have been transmitted through the manuscript tradition or on papyri. The authors offer full editorial assistance to the interpretation and originals, scholarly apparatus with textual variant readings, metrical analysis, general comment on the historical & literary context of the texts, and then detailed line-by-line commentary. Volume I offers an introduction and then all hymns in verse translation, each followed by a general discussion situating the text in the context of Greek worship. This first volume is perfectly accessible to the Greekless reader as Greek citations are translated throughout. Volume II gives the Greek texts, apparatus criticus, metrical analysis and line-by-line commentary on language & content. Both volumes contain a bibliography and index. Mr Furley studied Classics at University College, London, and holds a Ph.D. from Cambridge (Trinity College). Mr Bremer studies classics at Cambridge and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Amsterdam. He has taught at Brown University and Columbia University in the US.
