Germany from Napoleon to Bismarck
Thomas Nipperdey, "Germany from Napoleon to Bismarck "
English | ISBN: 069102636X | 1996 | 716 pages | PDF | 55 MB
Thomas Nipperdey offers readers insights into the history and the culture of German nationalism, bringing to light much-needed information on the immediate prenational period of transition. A subject of passionate debates, the beginnings of German nationalism here receive a thorough-going exploration, from the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire to Bismarck's division of the German-speaking world into three parts: an enlarged Prussian state north of the Main, an isolated Austria-Hungary in the south, and a group of Catholic states in between. This altering of power structures, Nipperdey maintains, was the crucial action on which the future of the German state hinged. He traces the failure of German liberalism amidst the rise of nationalism, turning it from a story of inevitable catastrophe toward a series of episodes filled with contingency and choice.

Helmut Walser Smith, Paul Woodson (Narrator), "Germany: A Nation in Its Time: Before, During, and After Nationalism, 1500-2000"
For nearly a century, historians have depicted Germany as a rabidly nationalist land, born in a sea of aggression. Not so, says Helmut Walser Smith, who, in this groundbreaking 500-year history, challenges traditional perceptions of Germany's conflicted past, revealing a nation far more thematically complicated than 20th-century historians have imagined.

E-BooksMobilizing on the Extreme Right Germany, Italy, and the United States

Mobilizing on the Extreme Right Germany, Italy, and the United States
Mobilizing on the Extreme Right: Germany, Italy, and the United States By Manuela Caiani, Donatella della Porta, Claudius Wagemann
2012 | 266 Pages | ISBN: 0199641269 | PDF | 3 MB
Research on the extreme right is rare, and the extreme right has rarely been analysed as a social movement. In this volume, the extreme right is compared in Italy, Germany, and the United States using concepts and methods developed in social movement studies. In particular, the book describes the discourse, action, and organizational structures of the extreme right, and explains these on the basis of the discursive and political opportunities available to the social movement as a whole. Three main empirical methods are used in the research. The frame analysis looks at the cognitive mechanisms that are relevant in influencing organizational and individual behaviour. The network analysis looks at the (inter-) organizational structural characteristics of right-wing organizations. Finally, protest event analysis allows for an empirical summary of the actions undertaken by right-wing extremists over the last decade. The substantive chapters address the organizational structure of the extreme right, their action repertoires, the framing of protest events, the definition of 'us', the struggle against modernity, old and new forms of racism, opposition to globalization, and populism.

E-BooksOil and the Great Powers Britain and Germany, 1914 to 1945

Oil and the Great Powers Britain and Germany, 1914 to 1945
Oil and the Great Powers: Britain and Germany, 1914 to 1945 by Anand Toprani
English | June 4, 2019 | ISBN: 0198834608 | PDF | 336 pages | 10.5 MB
The history of oil is a chapter in the story of Europe's geopolitical decline in the twentieth century. During the era of the two world wars, a lack of oil constrained Britain and Germany from exerting their considerable economic and military power independently. Both nations' efforts to restore the independence they had enjoyed during the Age of Coal backfired by inducing strategic over-extension, which served only to hasten their demise as great powers.

E-BooksRereading East Germany The Literature and Film of the GDR

Rereading East Germany The Literature and Film of the GDR
Rereading East Germany: The Literature and Film of the GDR By Karen Leeder (ed.)
2015 | 280 Pages | ISBN: 1107006368 | PDF | 5 MB
This volume is the first to address the culture of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) as a historical entity, but also to trace the afterlife of East Germany in the decades since the fall of the Berlin Wall. An international team of outstanding scholars offers essential and thought-provoking essays, combining a chronological and genre-based overview from the beginning of the GDR in 1949 to the unification in 1990 and beyond, with in-depth analysis of individual works. A final chapter traces the resonance of the GDR in the years since its demise and analyses the fascination it engenders. The volume provides a 'rereading' of East Germany and its legacy as a cultural phenomenon free from the prejudices that prevailed while it existed, offering English translations throughout, a guide to further reading and a chronology.
