E-BooksGeorge Bernard Shaw in Context

George Bernard Shaw in Context
Brad Kent, "George Bernard Shaw in Context "
English | ISBN: 1107047455 | 2015 | 418 pages | PDF | 24 MB
When George Bernard Shaw died in 1950, the world lost one of its most well-known authors, a revolutionary who was as renowned for his personality as he was for his humour, humanity, and rebellious thinking. He remains a compelling figure who deserves attention not only for how influential he was in his time, but for how relevant he is to ours. This collection sets Shaw's life and achievements in context, with forty-two scholarly essays devoted to subjects that interested him and defined his work. Contributors explore a wide range of themes, moving from factors that were formative in Shaw's life, to the artistic work that made him most famous and the institutions with which he worked, to the political and social issues that consumed much of his attention, and, finally, to his influence and reception. Presenting fresh material and arguments, this collection will point to new directions of research for future scholars.

E-BooksJohn Marshall on George Washington An Episode in American Political Biography by Christopher Lee Philips

John Marshall on George Washington An Episode in American Political Biography by Christopher Lee Philips
John Marshall on George Washington: An Episode in American Political Biography by Christopher Lee Philips
English | MP3@192 kbps | 24 min | 33.6 MB
Virginia patriot and jurist John Marshall wrote the first authorized biography of George Washington, Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, first President of the United States and Father of His Country. Published from 1804 through 1807 and sold by subscription, Marshall's Life of Washington is a 3,200 page door-stop, more history than biography, and a work Thomas Jefferson privately considered "a five volumed libel."When an objective biographer renders upon a president the judgment of history, critics usually question the author's degree of access to their subject, cooperation among members of the president's inner circle, and, more conspicuously, any hint of political bias. When the author is a confidante, a political ally, or even a protégé, critics often dismiss the work as entirely suspect, politically motivated, replete with vendettas to launch and old scores to settle. Imagine John Roberts writing a fair and balanced biography of George W. Bush or William Rehnquist waxing objective on the presidencies of Richard Nixon or Ronald Reagan and you can begin to comprehend the controversy that surrounded John Marshall's Life of Washington, written early in Marshall's tenure as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The biographical enterprise taken up by John Marshall with his friend Bushrod Washington proved less successful than they had hoped. Only about seven thousand sets of the Life of Washington were eventually sold. Nevertheless, all parties involved fared well financially, and throughout his later years Marshall regularly contemplated publication of a revised edition of the Life of Washington. Marshall's long-standing friendship with Bushrod weathered their joint publishing experience, and they remained staunch allies throughout their tenure on the Supreme Court, where Marshall's vigorous defense of the Constitution reigned until 1835.

The life and death of a 19th-century circus legend. On 28 November 1911, a retired showman died violently at his home in North London. Known to the world as Lord George Sanger, he was once the biggest name in show business, and was venerated as a national institution. The death of Britain's wealthiest showman read like a popular crime thriller: a merciless killer, a famous victim, a desperate manhunt and a dramatic denouement few could have anticipated. But for over a century, questions have persisted about the murder. Weaving in the story of George's rise to fame and the history of Britain's entertainment industry, The Killing of Lord George uses previously unpublished archive material to reveal the true story behind the brutal crime that shocked Edwardian England.

E-BooksMy Gay Church Days by George Azar

My Gay Church Days by George Azar
My Gay Church Days by George Azar
English | MP3@192 kbps | 7h 40m | 632.4 MB
George was your average American kid born to traditional Middle Eastern immigrants. Curious about life but tortured by vicious bullying in middle school, he found what seemed like a solution: evangelical Christianity. It appeared to have the cure for his most "shameful sin." Believing his homosexual feelings were an abomination before God, he committed his life to a church community that accepted him, conditionally. While hiding the scariest truths about him for fear of losing their love, he went from Bible study to Bible college, committing every aspect of his life to his faith - even forsaking important relationships "for the sake of the Gospel." Little did he know that the steady trickle of relinquished identity would create a psychological dysmorphia that allowed his oppressors to keep him in dangerous isolation. My Gay Church Days is the true story of a profoundly insecure evangelical pastor who eventually decided enough was enough. After failed relationships, crippling anxiety, and cult-like codependency, George broke away from rigid Christianity to pursue the thing he once found most dreadful and fearful about himself. This book is a crusade of revealing, an exploration of conformity, oppression, awakening, and self-discovery unlike any other. Ultimately, it is also a quest to save other "lost souls" by example, calling others to rise above the expectations of others and accept themselves as they are.
