E-BooksOrgies of Feeling Melodrama and the Politics of Freedom

Orgies of Feeling Melodrama and the Politics of Freedom
Elisabeth R. Anker, "Orgies of Feeling: Melodrama and the Politics of Freedom"
English | 2014 | ISBN: 082235697X, 0822356864 | PDF | pages: 353 | 1.7 mb
Melodrama is not just a film or literary genre but a powerful political discourse that galvanizes national sentiment to legitimate state violence. Finding virtue in national suffering and heroism in sovereign action, melodramatic political discourses cast war and surveillance as moral imperatives for eradicating villainy and upholding freedom. In Orgies of Feeling, Elisabeth R. Anker boldly reframes political theories of sovereignty, freedom, and power by analyzing the work of melodrama and affect in contemporary politics. Arguing that melodrama animates desires for unconstrained power, Anker examines melodramatic discourses in the War on Terror, neoliberal politics, anticommunist rhetoric, Hollywood film, and post-Marxist critical theory. Building on Friedrich Nietzsche's notion of "orgies of feeling," in which overwhelming emotions displace commonplace experiences of vulnerability and powerlessness onto a dramatic story of injured freedom, Anker contends that the recent upsurge in melodrama in the United States is an indication of public discontent. Yet the discontent that melodrama reflects is ultimately an expression of the public's inability to overcome systemic exploitation and inequality rather than an alarmist response to inflated threats to the nation.

E-BooksForm and Feeling in Japanese Literati Culture

Form and Feeling in Japanese Literati Culture
Matthew Mewhinney, "Form and Feeling in Japanese Literati Culture"
English | ISBN: 3031119215 | 2022 | 271 pages | PDF | 7 MB
This book explores how two early modern and two modern Japanese writers - Yosa Buson (1716-83), Ema Saikō (1787-1861), Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902), and Natsume Sōseki (1867-1916) - experimented with the poetic artifice afforded by the East Asian literati (bunjin) tradition, a repertoire of Chinese and Japanese poetry and painting. Their experiments generated a poetics of irony that transformed the lineaments of lyric expression in literati culture and advanced the emergence of modern prose poetry in Japanese literature. Through rigorous close readings, this study changes our understanding of the relationship between lyric form and the representation of self, sense, and feeling in Japanese poetic writing from the late eighteenth through the early twentieth century. The book aims to reach a broad audience, including specialists in East Asian Studies, Anglophone literary studies, and Comparative Literature.

E-BooksTourist Distractions Traveling and Feeling in Transnational Hallyu Cinema

Tourist Distractions Traveling and Feeling in Transnational Hallyu Cinema
Youngmin Choe, "Tourist Distractions: Traveling and Feeling in Transnational Hallyu Cinema"
English | 2016 | ISBN: 0822361302, 0822361116 | PDF | pages: 265 | 28.2 mb
In Tourist Distractions Youngmin Choe uses hallyu (Korean-wave) cinema as a lens to examine the relationships among tourism and travel, economics, politics, and history in contemporary East Asia. Focusing on films born of transnational collaboration and its networks, Choe shows how the integration of the tourist imaginary into hallyu cinema points to the region's evolving transnational politics and the ways Korea negotiates its colonial and Cold War past with East Asia's neoliberal present. Hallyu cinema's popularity has inspired scores of international tourists to visit hallyu movie sets, filming sites, and theme parks. This tourism helps ease regional political differences; reimagine South Korea's relationships with North Korea, China, and Japan; and blur the lines between history, memory, affect, and consumerism. It also provides distractions from state-sponsored narratives and forges new emotional and economic bonds that foster community and cooperation throughout East Asia. By attending to the tourist imaginary at work in hallyu cinema, Choe helps us to better understand the complexities, anxieties, and tensions of East Asia's new affective economy as well as Korea's shifting culture industry, its relation to its past, and its role in a rapidly changing region.

E-BooksFeeling, Thinking, and Talking How the Embodied Brain Shapes Everyday Communication

Feeling, Thinking, and Talking How the Embodied Brain Shapes Everyday Communication
English | 2022 | ISBN: 1108839045 | 366 pages | True PDF | 7.29 MB
The way the brain, body, and mind interact with social structure to shape communication has so far not received the attention it deserves. This book addresses this gap by providing a novel account of communication as a social, biological and neurological force. Combining theories from communication studies and psycholinguistics, and drawing on biological and evolutionary perspectives, it shows how communication is inherently both biological and social, and that language and the neural systems that support it have evolved in response to a complex social environment. It introduces a clear set of terms based on current research, and illustrates key concepts using real-life examples from everyday conversation - speaking to a number of current debates around the evolutionary and biological basis of language, and the relationship between language, cognition, and environment. Thought provoking and engaging, it will change the way we think about the relationship between communication and cognition.
