E-BooksThe Faces of the Other Religious Rivalry and Ethnic Encounters in the Later Roman World

The Faces of the Other Religious Rivalry and Ethnic Encounters in the Later Roman World
The Faces of the Other: Religious Rivalry and Ethnic Encounters in the Later Roman World By Maijastina Kahlos (ed.)
2011 | 334 Pages | ISBN: 2503539998 | PDF | 2 MB
The foundations of European civilization as we know it today were laid in Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. 'The Faces of the Other: Religious Rivalry and Ethnic Encounters in the Later Roman World' traces the roots of the attitudes and argumentation about religious or ethnic otherness in modern western culture. It aims at deepening the historical understanding of attitudes towards otherness as well as cultural and religious conflicts in world history. 'The Faces of the Other' discusses the conceptions, depictions, and attitudes towards the other in Graeco-Roman antiquity. The book focuses on the perception of otherness, whether other peoples or religions, in the Later Roman Empire as understood broadly, from the first until the fifth century CE. These others are ethnic others such as the Persians, Huns, and the Germanic peoples were to Romans, or religious others such as Jews were to Christians or Christians to Jews, Christians to pagans or pagans to Christians, or different cults to the 'mainstream' Romans, or different Christian sects to each other.

English | 2017 | ISBN: 1782437878 | EPUB | pages: 256 | 7.3 mb
Since 2011, the use of emoji - deriving from the Japanese, meaning picture character - has become a global phenomenon. We send over 6 billion emoji every day and regularly send emoji-only messages, and, when Oxford Dictionaries named the 'Face with Tears of Joy' emoji as their 'Word of the Year 2015', it received an enormous amount of criticism.

E-BooksAmerican Faces A Cultural History of Portraiture and Identity

American Faces A Cultural History of Portraiture and Identity
Richard H. Saunders, "American Faces: A Cultural History of Portraiture and Identity"
English | 2016 | ISBN: 1611688922 | PDF | pages: 258 | 18.2 mb
Portraits. We know what they are, but why do we make them? Americans have been celebrating themselves in portraits since the arrival of the first itinerant portrait painters to the colonies. They created images to commemorate loved ones, glorify the famous, establish our national myths, and honor our shared heroes. Whether painting in oil, carving in stone, casting in bronze, capturing on film, or calculating in binary code, we spend considerable time creating, contemplating, and collecting our likenesses. In this sumptuously illustrated book, Richard H. Saunders explores our collective understanding of portraiture, its history in America, how it shapes our individual and national identity, and why we make portraits―whether for propaganda and public influence or for personal and private appreciation. American Faces is a rich and fascinating view of ourselves.

E-BooksMany Faces of Mulian The Precious Scrolls of Late Imperial China

Many Faces of Mulian The Precious Scrolls of Late Imperial China
Rostislav Berezkin, Victor H. Mair, "Many Faces of Mulian: The Precious Scrolls of Late Imperial China"
English | 2017 | ISBN: 0295742526, 0295742518 | PDF | pages: 273 | 41.6 mb
The story of Mulian rescuing his mother's soul from hell has evolved as a narrative over several centuries in China, especially in the baojuan (precious scrolls) genre. This genre, a prosimetric narrative in vernacular language, first appeared around the fourteenth century and endures as a living tradition. In exploring the evolution of the Mulian story, Rostislav Berezkin illuminates changes in the literary and religious characteristics of the genre. He also examines material from other forms of Chinese literature and from modern performances of baojuan, tracing their transformation from tools of Buddhist proselytizing to sectarian propaganda to folk ritualized storytelling. Ultimately, he reveals the special features of baojuan as a type of performance literature that had its foundations in multiple literary traditions.
