Cult Cinema A Personal Exploration of Sects, Brainwashing and Bad Religion in Film and Television
Howard Ingham, "Cult Cinema: A Personal Exploration of Sects, Brainwashing and Bad Religion in Film and Television"
English | 2021 | ASIN: B08WRMFZ33 | 262 pages | AZW3 | 0.55 MB
Religious extremism is one of our most acute current anxieties, but it has been with us for centuries. And from the birth of Christianity right through to the post-Trump era, it has always been tied to personalities and the cults they inspire. And the stories we tell about them reflect that. Cult Cinema uses cinematic and televisual depictions of isolated sects, self-help pyramid schemes, pagan village conspiracies, evangelical grifters and more to shine a lens upon what happens when belief goes bad. Drawing from sources ranging from situation comedy to exploitation horror and beyond, this book examines why people join abusive religious groups, what we really mean by "brainwashing", and what it means to escape. Howard David Ingham has been writing about media, horror, the occult and the storytelling of religious belief for two decades. Their last book, We Don't Go Back: A Watcher's Guide to Folk Horror, was nominated for a 2018 Bram Stoker Award (Superior Achievement in Nonfiction). "A personal and cinematic journey through the strange and terrifying world of cults, this is a deeply honest and empathetic look at how people fall into - and escape from - damaging group dynamics. Cult Cinema is a breathtaking achievement..." Gwendolyn Kiste, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of The Rust Maidens

E-BooksIn Search of Wonderful Ideas Critical Exploration in Teacher Education

In Search of Wonderful Ideas Critical Exploration in Teacher Education
Mary Kay Delaney, "In Search of Wonderful Ideas: Critical Exploration in Teacher Education"
English | ISBN: 080776518X | 2021 | 208 pages | PDF | 5 MB
Drawing on the work of Eleanor Duckworth, this volume examines Critical Exploration in the Classroom (CEC)―a learning-teaching research practice that positions teachers as researchers of their students' sense-making and learners as theorizers and investigators. By integrating CEC into their teacher education classrooms, chapter authors have found that they can reliably unsettle their teacher candidates' understandings about the nature of teaching and learning and recenter their attention on the intellectual originality and creativity of all young people. In this way, CEC provides valuable tools in the work of creating more equitable and democratic classrooms. Such tools are needed in a broader environment that overvalues instrumental approaches to achieving specified learning outcomes. Readers will find practices that empower and sustain the deep intellectual engagement of all learners. Integrating classroom narratives and other forms of documentation, this resource illustrates the kinds of profound changes in understanding that have occurred for teacher candidates as a result of working with CEC.

E-BooksRussia and Soul An Exploration

Russia and Soul An Exploration
Russia and Soul: An Exploration By Dale Pesmen
2000 | 374 Pages | ISBN: 0801437393 | PDF | 23 MB
This ethnography of everyday life in contemporary Russia is also an examination of discourses & practices of "soul" or dusha. Russian soul has historically appeared as a myth, a consoling fiction & a trope of national & individual self-definition that drew romantic foreigners to Russia. Pesmen shows that in the 1990s this "soul" was scorned, worshipped & used to create, manipulate & exploit cultural capital. She focuses on "soul" in part as what people chose to do & how they did it, especially practices considered "definitive" of Russians, such as hospitality, alcoholic beverage use, steam baths, the language, music & suffering. Attempting to avoid narrow definitions of soul as a thing, she develops a new way of structuring ethnographic interviews. During a stay in a formerly closed military industrial city & surrounding villages, she spent time on public transportation & in kitchens, steam baths, vegetable gardens, shops & workplaces. She uses stories from her fieldwork along with examples from the media & literature to introduce a phenomenology of russkaia dusha & of related American & other non-Russian metaphysical notions, exploring diverse elements in their makeup, examining & questioning the world created when people believe in such "deep", "vast", "enigmatic", "internal" centers. Among theoretical issues addressed are those of power, community, self, exchange, coherence & morality. Her attention to dusha gives her a multifaceted perspective on Russian culture & society & informs her portrayal of life in a Russian city at a historically critical moment.
