European Architecture, 1750-1890
Free Download Barry Bergdoll, "European Architecture, 1750-1890"
English | 2000 | ISBN: 0192842226 | PDF | pages: 340 | 31.3 mb
This comprehensive examination of eighteenth and nineteenth-century architecture explores its extreme diversity within the context of tremendous social, economic and political upheaval. Never before had the functional requirements and expressive capacities of architecture been tested so thoroughly and with such diversity of invention. Bergdoll traces this experimentation in a broad range of contexts, focusing in particular on the relation of architectural design to new theories of history, new categories of scientific inquiry, and the broadening audience for architecture in this period of transformation. Unlike traditional surveys with long lists of buildings and architects, the themes are elucidated by in-depth coverage of key buildings which in turn are situated in both their local and European context.

The Books that Made the European Enlightenment A History in 12 Case Studies
Free Download The Books that Made the European Enlightenment: A History in 12 Case Studies (Cultures of Early Modern Europe) by Gary Kates
English | September 8, 2022 | ISBN: 1350277649, 1350277657 | True EPUB | 456 pages | 5.6 MB
In contrast to traditional Enlightenment studies that focus solely on authors and ideas, Gary Kates' employs a literary lens to offer a wholly original history of the period in Europe from 1699 to 1780. Each chapter is a biography of a book which tells the story of the text from its inception through to the revolutionary era, with wider aspects of the Enlightenment era being revealed through the narrative of the book's publication and reception. Here, Kates joins new approaches to book history with more traditional intellectual history by treating authors, publishers, and readers in a balanced fashion throughout.

Music in European Thought 1851-1912
Free Download Bojan Bujic, "Music in European Thought 1851-1912 "
English | ISBN: 0521230500 | | 432 pages | PDF | 25 MB
This volume, in the series Cambridge Readings in the Literature of Music, is an anthology of original German, French and English writings from the period 1851-1912. Throughout the second half of the nineteenth century music continued to be a subject to which philosophers, psychologists, scientists and critics repeatedly addressed themselves. Some of the philosophical approaches followed the tradition of the German speculative philosophy of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Elsewhere the new 'scientific' climate of the nineteenth century left its mark on the work of scientists and psychologists interested in the impact of acoustical stimuli on the human mind or in the role of music and song in the prehistory of mankind.

The evolving role of national parliaments in the European Union Ireland as a case study
Gavin Barrett, "The evolving role of national parliaments in the European Union: Ireland as a case study"
English | ISBN: 1784993212 | 2018 | 360 pages | EPUB | 586 KB
This book examines the gradually increasing role of national parliaments in the European Union and asks how and why this came about. It takes Ireland as a case study, examining the relationship between Ireland's parliament (the Oireachtas) and the European Union. It also focuses sharply on parliament's role in European affairs in Ireland, a jurisdiction of strong comparative interest to the UK . It examines the evolution in national parliaments' roles, the reasons for change and the challenges that must be faced in making further progress. The book analyses Ireland's slow parliamentary adaptation to European integration, analyses the impact of the Lisbon Treaty and economic crises in accelerating reform, and identifies where improvement is still badly needed.

E-BooksEuropean Politics 1815-1848

European Politics 1815-1848
Frederick C. Schneid, "European Politics 1815-1848 "
English | ISBN: 0754625753 | 2011 | 422 pages | EPUB | 1019 KB
The three intervening decades between the Congress of Vienna and the Revolutions of 1848 are marked by enormous social, political, economic and cultural change. Liberalism, nationalism, romanticism and industrialism profoundly affected the course of Europe and compelled conservative monarchies to accept the principles of collective action and military force to curb political revolution. In the years immediately following 1815, the Quadruple and Holy Alliances served the dual purpose of preventing a restoration of Bonapartism and suppressing revolutions. By the 1820s these international associations dissipated, but the principles upon which they were founded informed the decisions of the respective governments through 1848. The classic articles and papers collected in this volume attempt to illustrate that despite the substantial changes to European society which occurred during these thirty years, European powers accepted common principles which influenced their state's domestic and foreign policies.

E-BooksEurope's Third World The European Periphery in the Interwar Years

Europe's Third World The European Periphery in the Interwar Years
Derek H. Aldcroft, "Europe's Third World: The European Periphery in the Interwar Years "
English | ISBN: 1138272957 | 2016 | 229 pages | EPUB | 728 KB
Economic historians have perennially addressed the intriguing question of comparative development, asking why some countries develop much faster and further than others. Focusing primarily on Europe between 1914 and 1939, this present volume explores the development of thirteen countries that could be said to be categorised as economically backward during this period: Albania, Bulgaria, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey and Yugoslavia. These countries are linked, not only in being geographically on Europe's periphery, but all shared high agrarian components and income levels much lower than those enjoyed in western European countries. The study shows that by 1918 many of these countries had structural characteristics which either relegated them to a low level of development or reflected their economic backwardness, characteristics that were not helped by the hostile economic climate of the interwar period. It explores, region by region, how their progress was checked by war and depression, and how the effects of political and social factors could also be a major impediment to sustained progress and modernisation. For example, in many cases political corruption and instability, deficient administrations, ethnic and religious diversity, agrarian structures and backwardness, population pressures, as well as international friction, were retarding factors. In all this study offers a fascinating insight into many areas of Europe that are often ignored by economists and historians. It demonstrates that these countries were by no means a lost cause, and that their post-war performances show the latent economic potential that most harboured. By providing an insight into the development of Europe's 'periphery' a much more rounded and complete picture of the continent as a whole is achieved.
