"Andrew Robinson has now followed up his beautifully illustrated The Story of Writing with a highly appropriate sequelLost Languages, on undeciphered scripts. Many, it seems likely, will never be deciphered ..."Sir Arthur C. Clarke, C.B.E. A landmark study of the world's most important undeciphered writing systems and the current race to crack them Maybe it's the tantalizing possibility of giving new voice to long-hushed peoples and civilizations. Perhaps it's the puzzle solver's delight in the mental challenges posed by breaking their codes. Whatever the reasons, the public has long been fascinated with undeciphered ancient scripts and the ongoing efforts to crack them. In Lost Languages, Andrew Robinson reports from the front lines of the global efforts now under way to crack the Meroitic hieroglyphs of ancient Nubia, the Etruscan alphabet, the Indus Valley Sealstones, the Zapotec scriptthe earliest in the Americasand five other major "lost languages." An enthralling story of genius, passion, and competition, Lost Languages provides a revealing look at how decipherment is done. In what is truly an archaeological mystery book, the author examines each script in detail and reviews what is known about the people who created it, while weaving in the intriguing cast of characters currently competing for the glory of cracking these ancient codes.

E-BooksThe Enigma of Egill The Saga, the Viking Poet, and Snorri Sturluson

The Enigma of Egill The Saga, the Viking Poet, and Snorri Sturluson
Torfi H. Tulinius, Victoria Cribb, "The Enigma of Egill: The Saga, the Viking Poet, and Snorri Sturluson"
English | 2015 | ISBN: 0935995188 | PDF | pages: 338 | 54.0 mb
Egil's Saga, composed some eight hundred years ago to relate the life and times of Egill Skallagrimsson, the Viking poet and Icelander of the tenth century, is a major prose narrative thought by many scholars to be written by Snorri Sturluson, the great medieval historiographer of Iceland. Essential elements for understanding Egils saga in its time and place include, among others, the settlement of Iceland, the relationship between Icelanders and Norwegian kings, and the Christianization of the Norse world as pagan beliefs receded. The saga, one of the longest and best-structured in the medieval Icelandic literary canon, is, in the words of Torfi Tulinius, a story "of how people create an image of their past to give meaning to what is happening in their lives or of those that surround them."In a close reading of the saga, Tulinius brings forth the complex relationship between structure and meaning in the saga, as well as hitherto unnoticed references to Scripture that suggest a Christian interpretation of the main protagonist's life. A careful analysis of Snorri Sturluson's life and times allows Torfi to propose a context for a fuller perception of Egil's Saga as a great work of art.

E-BooksThe Great Fossil Enigma The Search for the Conodont Animal [Audiobook]

The Great Fossil Enigma The Search for the Conodont Animal [Audiobook]
The Great Fossil Enigma: The Search for the Conodont Animal (Audiobook)
English | ASIN: B0BQ194FPW | 2022 | 16 hours and 47 minutes | M4B@64 kbps | 479 MB
Author: Simon J. Knell
Narrator: James Cameron Stewart

Stephen Jay Gould borrowed from Winston Churchill when he described the eel-like conodont animal as a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. The search for its identity confounded scientists for more than a century. Some thought it a slug, others a fish, a worm, a plant, even a primitive ancestor of ourselves. As the list of possibilities grew, an answer to the riddle never seemed any nearer. Would the animal that left behind the miniscule fossils known as conodonts ever be identified? Three times the creature was found, but each was quite different from the others. Were any of them really the one? Simon J. Knell takes the listener on a journey through 150 years of scientific thinking, imagining, and arguing. Slowly the animal begins to reveal traces of itself: its lifestyle, its remarkable evolution, its witnessing of great catastrophes, its movements over the surface of the planet, and finally its anatomy. Today the conodont animal remains perhaps the most disputed creature in the zoological world.

E-BooksThe Fourth Dimension Enigma of Time

The Fourth Dimension Enigma of Time
The Fourth Dimension: Enigma of Time
English | 2021 | ISBN: 1599426226 | 265 Pages | EPUB (True) | 3 MB
Einstein shocked the world by revealing that time can be different for different observers. This book offers a possible explanation of why it is so. It offers a never-attempted-before approach to understand the secret of time. As we all know, there is an intimate relationship between time and age of objects. But what is this relationship? The author dives deep into the possible relationships between time and age of objects- animate or inanimate- and, in turn, emerges with a novel concept of time- time is a measurement of age. The book proposes that time is acquired by age, not required for it; and thus, time is an acquired property of objects. The author also proposes that just as length, width and height are the measurements of physical extensions of objects (their three spatial dimensions) and not any independent entities; time too, being the measurement of their age, is not independent of objects. In this sense, time seems to be the fourth dimension of objects instead of space. The book attempts to justify its hypothesis by testing its compatibility with Theory of Relativity. Also discussed is the meaning of the so called passage of time and the arrow of time on the basis of the model of time proposed here. The meaning of the much debated concept of time-travel is thoroughly discussed here and it is proposed that this concept, in the sense that we usually take, is a myth. Even if you can manage to reach your future by overcoming all technological limitations (as we all know, theory of relativity allows it), all your friends will be there with you, witnessing the same future. The only difference will be- your clocks will not agree with those of your friends.
