E-BooksEndangered City The Politics of Security and Risk in Bogotá

Endangered City The Politics of Security and Risk in Bogotá
Austin Zeiderman, "Endangered City: The Politics of Security and Risk in Bogotá"
English | 2016 | ISBN: 0822361620, 0822361434 | PDF | pages: 313 | 19.9 mb
Security and risk have become central to how cities are planned, built, governed, and inhabited in the twenty-first century. In Endangered City, Austin Zeiderman focuses on this new political imperative to govern the present in anticipation of future harm. Through ethnographic fieldwork and archival research in Bogotá, Colombia, he examines how state actors work to protect the lives of poor and vulnerable citizens from a range of threats, including environmental hazards and urban violence. By following both the governmental agencies charged with this mandate and the subjects governed by it, Endangered City reveals what happens when logics of endangerment shape the terrain of political engagement between citizens and the state. The self-built settlements of Bogotá's urban periphery prove a critical site from which to examine the rising effect of security and risk on contemporary cities and urban life.

E-BooksExtinct & Endangered Insects in Peril

Extinct & Endangered Insects in Peril
English | 2022 | ISBN: 1419759639 | 144 pages | True EPUB | 62.76 MB
Extraordinary images by master macro photographer Levon Biss capture a vanishing world of insects from the collections of the American Museum of Natural History in New York
Insects are at once our most familiar fellow animals and the most mysterious. They appear to be indestructible, but globally, insect species are quietly disappearing in the sixth mass extinction that life on Earth is undergoing today. This joint project of photographer Levon Biss and the American Museum of Natural History contains indelible images of 40 extinct or endangered species in the museum's collection, selected from its vast holdings by a team of scientists. They range from imperiled old friends like the monarch butterfly and the nine-spotted ladybug to the remote Lord Howe Island stick insect of Australia, thought to be extinct for most of the 20th century until a tiny population was discovered and bred in captivity in 2001. All were sent to Biss's studio, where he created commanding portraits that can be enlarged 300-times lifesize to reveal vivid full-page details of form and color—a world invisible to our naked eyes. The result is a book that insists on the momentous significance of these small, mostly unknown creatures.

E-BooksPolicing International Trade in Endangered Species The CITES Treaty and Compliance

Policing International Trade in Endangered Species The CITES Treaty and Compliance
Rosalind Reeve, "Policing International Trade in Endangered Species: The CITES Treaty and Compliance"
English | ISBN: 1853838756 | 2004 | 346 pages | EPUB | 1226 KB
The convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is one of the oldest multilateral environmental agreements. Since it was established to prevent international trade in wild animals and plants from threatening their survival, an complex system has evolved to induce countries to comply with and enforce the treaty's trade controls. This book presents the first definitive study of the CITES compliance system —a self-policing system which relies heavily on recommended trade suspensions to deal with non-compliance. It concludes that trade suspensions are effective, but identifies several weaknesses in the system. A strategy is advanced to address these weaknesses, drawing on lessons from other international compliance systems, and the potential for conflict between CITES trade restrictions and the WTO is analysed.

Revitalizing Endangered Languages A Practical Guide
Revitalizing Endangered Languages: A Practical Guide
English | 2021 | ISBN: 1108485758 | 359 Pages | PDF | 6.4 MB
Of the approximately 7,000 languages in the world, at least half may no longer be spoken by the end of the twenty-first century. Languages are endangered by a number of factors, including globalization, education policies, and the political, economic and cultural marginalization of minority groups. This guidebook provides ideas and strategies, as well as some background, to help with the effective revitalization of endangered languages. It covers a broad scope of themes including effective planning, benefits, wellbeing, economic aspects, attitudes and ideologies. The chapter authors have hands-on experience of language revitalization in many countries around the world, and each chapter includes a wealth of examples, such as case studies from specific languages and language areas. Clearly and accessibly written, it is suitable for non-specialists as well as academic researchers and students interested in language revitalization. This book is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Endangered Languages, Knowledge Systems and Belief Systems
Endangered Languages, Knowledge Systems and Belief Systems By David Hirsh
2014 | 153 Pages | ISBN: 3034312326 | PDF | 2 MB
Many of the world's 7000 documented language groups are endangered due to falling rates of language and culture transmission from one generation to the next. Some endangered language groups have been the focus of efforts to reverse patterns of linguistic and cultural loss, with variable success. This book presents case studies of endangered language groups from Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and the Pacific (including Bisu, Iban, Iquito, Quechua, Wawa, Yi and sign languages) and of their associated knowledge and belief systems, to highlight the importance of preserving linguistic and cultural diversity. Issues of identity and pride emerge within the book, alongside discussion of language and culture policy.
