Money and the End of Empire: British International Economic Policy and the Colonies, 1947-58 by Gerold Krozewski
English | PDF | 2001 | 320 Pages | ISBN : 0333919831 | 1.5 MB
This book presents a penetrating new analysis of the end of the empire, located at the intersection of politics, economy and society in Britain and the colonies. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, when political control was feasible, discriminatory management of the colonies sustained Britain's postwar recovery. But synergy turned into conflict as Britain moved towards economic liberalization and financial cosmopolitanism, and found it increasingly difficult to reconcile established relations with emerging priorities. Based on a wide range of archival and other sources, this study relates political and economic developments in Britain and the colonies in original ways to overcome the gulf between peripheralist and Euro-centric explanations of postwar British imperial relations, and helps redress the neglect of the empire in modern international history. Money and the End of Empire will nourish debates in British and international economic and political history and is essential reading for historians of Britain and the empire.

President George W. Bush dubbed Karl Rove "The Architect" for his skill in creating an unprecedented campaign and fund-raising machine. But Rove's ambitions have always been far more sweeping-to build a right-wing dynasty that can dominate American politics for decades. Rove's master plan imagines a political system so controlled by Republicans that it is resisted only by symbolic opposition.

Africa: the Berlin conference had only recognized the colonies of Angola and Mozambique, but Portugal claimed all the territory that united them, the region known as Zambeziland, by the river Zambezi, which crosses it. Already five years ago, Britain had succeeded in having Bechuanaland recognized as its protectorate (although it was expanding: a few months later it would annex the northernmost region indicated on the map), and Cecil Rhodes was obtaining concessions from the indigenous chiefs in Zambeziland. This put Portugal in conflict with Britain. In defense of its claims, Portugal tried to gain the support of Germany, claiming that a third power was needed to isolate the German colonies from the British to avoid a conflict between two great powers. However, Germany did not want to confront Britain and did not support Portugal, nor did the Republic of South Africa

The French Revolution facilitated the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte, but after gaining power he knew that his first task was to end it. In this book William Doyle describes how he did so, beginning with the three large issues that had destabilized revolutionary France: war, religion and monarchy. Doyle shows how, as First Consul of the Republic, Napoleon resolved these issues: first by winning the war, then by forging peace with the Church and finally by making himself a monarch.
Napoleon at Peace ends by discussing Napoleon's one great failure – his attempt to restore the colonial empire destroyed by war and slave rebellion. By the time this was abandoned, the fragile peace with Britain had broken down, and the Napoleonic wars had begun.
