E-BooksEdge of Empire The British Political Officer and Tribal Administration on the North-West Frontier 1877-1947

Edge of Empire The British Political Officer and Tribal Administration on the North-West Frontier 1877-1947
Edge of Empire: The British Political Officer and Tribal Administration on the North-West Frontier 1877-1947 By Christian Tripodi
2011 | 268 Pages | ISBN: 075466838X | PDF | 3 MB
Britain's often rather ad hoc approach to colonial expansion in the nineteenth century resulted in a variety of imaginative solutions designed to exert control over an increasingly diverse number of territories. One such instrument of government was the political officer. Created initially by the East India Company to manage relations with the princely rulers of the Indian States, political offers developed into a mechanism by which the government could manage its remoter territories through relations with local power brokers; the policy of 'indirect rule'. By the beginning of the twentieth century, political officers were providing a low-key, affordable method of exercising British control over 'native' populations throughout the empire, from India to Africa, Asia to Middle East. In this study, the role of the political officer on the Western Frontier of India between 1877-1947 is examined in detail, providing an account of the personalities and mechanisms of colonial influence/tribal control in what remains one of the most unstable regions in the world today. It charts the successes, failures, dangers and attractions of a system of power by proxy and examines how, working alone in one of the most dangerous and lawless corners of the Empire, political officers strove to implement the Crown's policies across the North-West Frontier and Baluchistan through a mixture of conflict and collaboration with indigenous tribal society. In charting their progress, the book provides a degree of historical context for those engaging in ambitious military operations in the same region, seeking to increasingly rely on the support of tribal chiefs, warlords and former enemies in order for new administrations to function. As such this book provides not only a fascinating account of key historical events in Anglo-Indian colonial history, but also provides a telling insight and background into an increasingly seductive aspect of contemporary political and military strategy.

E-BooksReligion on the Edge de-Centering and Re-Centering the Sociology of Religion

Religion on the Edge de-Centering and Re-Centering the Sociology of Religion
Courtney Bender, "Religion on the Edge: de-Centering and Re-Centering the Sociology of Religion"
English | ISBN: 0199938644 | 2012 | 312 pages | PDF | 18 MB
The thirteen essays in this volume challenge conventional scholarly approaches to the sociology of religion. They urge readers to look beyond congregational settings, beyond the United States, and to religions other than Christianity, and encourage critical engagement with religion's complex social consequences. Religion on the Edge offers groundbreaking new methodologies and models, bringing to light conceptual lacunae, re-centering what is unsettled by their use, and inviting a significant reordering of long-accepted political and economic hierarchies. The book shows how social scientists across the disciplines can engage with the sociology of religion. By challenging many of its long-standing empirical and analytic tendencies, the contributors to this volume show how their work informs and is informed by debates in other fields and the analytical purchase gained by bringing these many conversations together.

This place felt, in Stacey Miller's words, like 'watching paint dry.'It was sad enough that she was born here. Everything seemed like it was written down like in a book. A bore, she called it. To her, living here was just pure torture. She had enough of the place.Holly field was a beautiful place. It was the usual look of a town with a mix of forestry and homely buildings. All the houses looked the same. Cozy and average with the picket fences and gates. Some with manicured lawns and gardens. They all looked the same. The town had a simple look to it. It was the only place she had ever known.Unfortunately.Being the kind of person she was, which was an isolated and self-absorbed personality, she wanted nothing but to know more about the world outside her town.Where else would she go? Why would she go? Could she even go?Of course not.She was a sixteen-year-old brunette, who lived with her quite odd parents. A sixteen-year-old girl with short brown hair and dark eyes and no siblings who just lived like everything that was going to happen, happened.Of average height, modest stature and with no care for any of that, Stacey kept modest time away for herself. With her olive skin, moody and cool attitude, 'house with no neighbors' kind of home and 'dress me, I don't care' kind of wardrobe, Stacey barely had any close friends. Friends she had, but nothing more. Always cool, calm and collected, Stacey had a dark cloud over her thoughts concerning where she lived. She did not hate it. She just didn't know...

Edge of the Map is equal parts inspiring, dramatic, and heartbreaking. One of America's greatest high altitude mountaineers, Christine Boskoff was at the top of her career when she and her partner perished in an avalanche in 2006. Principled and humble, Boskoff was also a deeply loved role model in the climbing community.
