E-BooksPlants at the Margin Ecological Limits and Climate Change

Plants at the Margin Ecological Limits and Climate Change
G. K. Chesterton, "Plants at the Margin: Ecological Limits and Climate Change"
English | 2009 | ISBN: 052162309X | PDF | pages: 194 | 37.4 mb
Margins are by their very nature environmentally unstable - does it therefore follow that plant populations adapted for life in such areas will prove to be pre-adapted to withstand the changes that may be brought about by a warmer world? Biogeography, demography, reproductive biology, physiology and genetics all provide cogent explanations as to why limits occur where they do, and the purpose of this book is to bring together these different avenues of enquiry. Crawford's numerous beautiful illustrations of plants in their natural habitats remind us that the environment remains essential to our understanding of plants and their function. This book is suited to students, researchers and anyone with an interest in the impact of climate change on our world.

Society and the Environment Pragmatic Solutions to Ecological Issues
Michael Carolan, "Society and the Environment: Pragmatic Solutions to Ecological Issues"
English | 2016 | ISBN: 081335000X, 0367098199 | PDF | pages: 273 | 8.4 mb
Society and the Environment examines today's environmental controversies within a socio-organizational context. After outlining the contours of 'pragmatic environmentalism', Carolan considers the pressures that exist where ecology and society collide, such as population growth and its associated increased demands for food and energy. He also investigates how various ecological issues, such as climate change, are affecting our very own personal health. Finally, he drills into the social/structural dynamics (including political economy and the international legal system) that create ongoing momentum for environmental ills.

E-BooksEcological Footprints of Climate Change Adaptive Approaches and Sustainability

Ecological Footprints of Climate Change Adaptive Approaches and Sustainability
Ecological Footprints of Climate Change: Adaptive Approaches and Sustainability
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3031155009 | 782 Pages | PDF (True) | 28 MB
This book explores global implications of human activities that trigger changes in climate and the appropriate scientific, adaptive, and sustainable approaches as a proven information tool. It reveals that the ecological, social, and economic dynamics of the changing earth encompasses huge uncertainties coupled with its ability to be linked to other forms of global change. From a scientific perspective, multiple efforts are expedient to integrate the many aspects of global changes. Increases in science and technology have afforded nations the ability to plan for the future by investing in adaptive and mitigative measures to monitor present and future changes. Just as the climatic and ecological impacts of climate change are unequally distributed, so is the adaptive capacity to cope with these impacts in different nations. Considering that wealth, infrastructure, and political stability all contribute to a nation's capacity to anticipate and respond to change. So, global South nations who are disadvantaged in these areas are faced with more inequalities and more unique adaptive strategies. There is need for increased aggregate efforts and interaction between scientists, stakeholders, and policy makers to improve both decision-making and global change in science. Scientists and researchers need to work on expanding the range of polices that are proposed, debated, and implemented. This way, novelty, new ideas and methodologies are infused into the society. At this point of multiple climate footprints, there is an immense need to explore all ideas evaluating their possibilities in presenting alternative futures, developing alternative policies, and adaptive options to solve the intractable ecological footprints of climate change.

E-BooksThe Ecological Voice in Recent German-Swiss Prose

The Ecological Voice in Recent German-Swiss Prose
The Ecological Voice in Recent German-Swiss Prose By Andrew Liston
2011 | 242 Pages | ISBN: 3034302185 | PDF | 2 MB
This study focuses on the five most prominent Swiss writers of the last thirty-five years whose work features ecological crisis. It is an analysis of five narratologically divergent styles, ranging from the eco-parables of Franz Hohler to the hermeneutically defiant work of Gertrud Leutenegger. Between these poles, the author also explores works by Walther Kauer, Max Frisch and Beat Sterchi. Previously unpublished material from interviews with three of the authors is included. These writers are not only the most widely read and respected ecologically committed authors in Switzerland but also present a wide range of approaches to ecological problems in terms of both form and content. The study's purpose is not merely to provide a survey of fictional, ecological discourse in Switzerland but to analyse the literary strategies used: how well do the ways the authors tell their tales support their critical thrust? This question is posed within the proposition of the theoretical framework of an 'ecological voice'.

Natura Urbana Ecological Constellations in Urban Space (The MIT Press)
English | 2022 | ISBN: 0262046288 | 432 pages | True PDF EPUB | 39.91 MB
A study of urban nature that draws together different strands of urban ecology as well as insights derived from feminist, posthuman, and postcolonial thought.
Postindustrial transitions and changing cultures of nature have produced an unprecedented degree of fascination with urban biodiversity. The "other nature" that flourishes in marginal urban spaces, at one remove from the controlled contours of metropolitan nature, is not the poor relation of rural flora and fauna. Indeed, these islands of biodiversity underline the porosity of the distinction between urban and rural.
