Nurturing Indonesia Medicine and Decolonisation in the Dutch East Indies
Nurturing Indonesia: Medicine and Decolonisation in the Dutch East Indies By Hans Pols
2018 | 302 Pages | ISBN: 1108424570 | PDF | 13 MB
Hans Pols proposes a new perspective on the history of colonial medicine from the viewpoint of indigenous physicians. The Indonesian medical profession in the Dutch East Indies actively participated in political affairs by joining and leading nationalist associations, by publishing in newspapers and magazines, and by becoming members of city councils and the colonial parliament. Indonesian physicians were motivated by their medical training, their experiences as physicians, and their subordinate position within the colonial health care system to organise, lead, and join social, cultural, and political associations. Opening with the founding of Indonesia's first political association in 1908 and continuing with the initiatives of the Association of Indonesian Physicians, Pols describes how the Rockefeller Foundation's projects inspired the formulation of a nationalist health programme. Tracing the story through the Japanese annexation, the war of independence, and independent Indonesia, Pols reveals the relationship between medicine and decolonisation, and the role of physicians in Asian history.

E-BooksSpecific Performance in German, French and Dutch Law in the Nineteenth Century

Specific Performance in German, French and Dutch Law in the Nineteenth Century
Janwillem Oosterhuis, "Specific Performance in German, French and Dutch Law in the Nineteenth Century"
English | 2011 | pages: 653 | ISBN: 9004196056 | PDF | 7,5 mb
The current French, German and Dutch Law of Contract each offer a remedy of specific performance to creditors suffering from breach of contract. This book analyses the alterations to this remedy during the nineteenth century on the substantive, procedural and enforcement levels. Fascinatingly, there is a link between changes to the remedy and the development of early human rights and the mass industrialisation of society. The latter had the effect of actually converging the national remedies of specific performance in the examined systems: damages and rescission became more accessible as remedies at the cost of specific performance. The book demonstrates the interdependency between law and society and provides vital background information to the harmonisation of a controversial concept in the European Law of Obligations.Studies in the History of Private Law, vol. 2

E-BooksThe Dutch East India Company The History of the World's First Multinational Corporation

The Dutch East India Company The History of the World's First Multinational Corporation
The Dutch East India Company: The History of the World's First Multinational Corporation by Charles River Editors
English | February 23, 2017 | ISBN: 1543295371 | 68 pages | EPUB | 2.29 Mb
*Includes pictures *Includes contemporary accounts of the VOC's expeditions and conflicts *Includes a bibliography for further reading "Whereas pepper has nothing in it that can plead as a recommendation to fruit or berry, its only desirable quality being a certain pungency; and yet it is for this that we import it all the way from India!" - Pliny the Elder From classic grilled meat to exotic and savory 5-star dishes, pepper has long been the ultimate staple spice. While bulk pepper may be readily stocked in supermarkets and convenience stores today, there was once a time when the common spice was considered one of the most valuable commodities in the world. Merchants tripped over one another to get their hands on the tiny black beads, which live in colorful clusters of berry-like shells reminiscent of Christmas lights. They were so precious that an uncountable number of men crossed the turbulent and uncharted seas for them. In fact, the tropical spice was so highly sought after that blood was shed over the edible gold. To many, the mention of maritime merchants evokes an imagery of growling pirates donned in their stereotypical hats and a colorful parrot perched upon their shoulders. These nautical rascals wander the high seas in search of treasure and adventure. Though that imagery may be inaccurate, the real life companies that once dominated international waters operated on a similar thirst for conquest and riches. Perhaps the most famous - or as many would put it, infamous - of these naval corporations was the Dutch East India Company, also known as VOC. Established around the beginning of the 17th century, this nautical behemoth of a corporation was determined to squeeze everyone else out of the market. Vested with the power to wage war and exterminate any who dared stand in their way, the rest of the world stood by as the unstoppable force took over the whole of international maritime trade. The company would crush its opponents on the way to the top, establishing a monopoly on the global spice trade that would not only rock the world but forever change the course of modern business history. This book examines how the rabid consumer craving of a particular spice jumpstarted the legendary corporation, and how the Dutch East India Company rose to prominence through a brutal mix of financial acumen, merciless violence, and highly controversial business tactics. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the Dutch East India Company like never before, in no time at all.
