E-BooksKilling the Enemy Assassination Operations During World War II

Killing the Enemy Assassination Operations During World War II
Adam Leong Kok Wey, "Killing the Enemy: Assassination Operations During World War II "
English | ISBN: 1784530727 | 2015 | 272 pages | EPUB | 727 KB
During World War II, the British formed a secret division, the 'SOE' or Special Operations Executive, in order to support resistance organisations in occupied Europe. It also engaged in 'targeted killing' - the assassination of enemy political and military leaders. The unit is famous for equipping its agents with tools for use behind enemy lines, such as folding motorbikes, miniature submarines and suicide pills disguised as coat buttons. But its activities are now also gaining attention as a forerunner to today's 'extra-legal' killings of wartime enemies in foreign territory, for example through the use of unmanned drones. Adam Leong's work evaluates the effectiveness of political assassination in wartime using four examples: Heydrich's assassination in Prague (Operation Anthropoid); the daring kidnap of Major General Kreipe in Crete by Patrick Leigh Fermor; the failed attempt to assassinate Rommel, known as Operation Flipper; and the American assassination of General Yamamoto.

Breaking the Blockade The Bahamas during the Civil War
Charles D. Ross, "Breaking the Blockade: The Bahamas during the Civil War"
English | ISBN: 1496831349 | 2020 | 274 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
On April 16, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln issued a blockade of the Confederate coastline. The largely agrarian South did not have the industrial base to succeed in a protracted conflict. What it did have―and what England and other foreign countries wanted―was cotton and tobacco. Industrious men soon began to connect the dots between Confederate and British needs. As the blockade grew, the blockade runners became quite ingenious in finding ways around the barriers.

E-BooksMaterials Processing during Casting

Materials Processing during Casting
Materials Processing during Casting By Hasse Fredriksson, Ulla Akerlind(auth.)
2006 | 434 Pages | ISBN: 0470015136 | PDF | 6 MB
Casting is one of the most important processes in materials technology. In this unique book, each step in the casting and solidification process is described and models are set up, which in many cases can be approximated by simplified analytical expressions. All casting methods are featured, including component casting, ingot casting and continuous casting. Applications of the results are given in numerous worked examples within the text. Conclusions on how to avoid cracks, solidification pores, slag inclusions and other defects of the castings, can be drawn from the theoretical models. These conclusions are based on research results, which together give an idea of the development in the manufacture of castings. Most chapters conclude with a number of exercises, answers to which are given at the end of the book. The accompanying 'Guide to Exercises', provides the complete solutions to each of the exercises.Content: Chapter 1 Component Casting (pages 1-13): Chapter 2 Cast House Processes (pages 15-28): Chapter 3 Casting Hydrodynamics (pages 29-57): Chapter 4 Heat Transport during Component Casting (pages 59-92): Chapter 5 Heat Transport in Cast House Processes (pages 93-138): Chapter 6 Structure and Structure Formation in Cast Materials (pages 139-182): Chapter 7 Microsegregation in Alloys - Peritectic Reactions and Transformations (pages 183-225): Chapter 8 Heat Treatment and Plastic Forming (pages 227-253): Chapter 9 Precipitation of Pores and Slag Inclusions during Casting Processes (pages 255-309): Chapter 10 Solidification and Cooling Shrinkage of Metals and Alloys (pages 311-368): Chapter 11 Macrosegregation in Alloys (pages 369-410):

E-BooksThe Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812 The History of the Battle that Inspired the National Anthem

The Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812 The History of the Battle that Inspired the National Anthem
The Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812: The History of the Battle that Inspired the National Anthem by Charles River Editors
English | April 22, 2015 | ISBN: 1511838035 | 56 pages | EPUB | 1.59 Mb
*Includes pictures *Includes accounts of the fighting written by generals on both sides *Explains how Francis Scott Key witnessed the battle and wrote the national anthem *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents "And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there." - Francis Scott Key Sandwiched between the Revolution and the Civil War, the War of 1812 is one of America's forgotten conflicts, and the stalemated nature of the war (which resolved virtually none of either side's war aims) has also ensured that it is often given merely a cursory overview. Indeed, one of the few aspects of the war that remains common knowledge is that the most famous battle, the Battle of New Orleans, was fought after the Treaty of Ghent had formally ended the war. One other famous aspect of the war is that one of the battles inspired Francis Scott Key to pen the Star-Spangled Banner, which ultimately became America's national anthem. While the British horrified many Americans with the ease in which they sacked the capital at Washington, they faced stiff resistance around Baltimore, with American forces successfully fighting a delaying action that allowed for a proper defense of the city and its harbor. On September 13, 1814, Key and others bore witness to a heavy British bombardment of Fort McHenry that lasted for over a day, yet they proved unable to reduce the American defenses despite trying to land an invasion force outside the fort. In the wake of the unsuccessful assault, the British pulled back their forces, spurring Francis Scott Key to write the poem "Defence of McHenry." Ironically, the lyrics to that poem would eventually go together with an old, popular British hymn to produce America's Star-Spangled Banner. The Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812: The History of the Battle that Inspired the National Anthem looks at the campaign that culminated with the battle and its influence on Francis Scott Key. Along with pictures and a bibliography, you will learn about the Battle of Baltimore like never before, in no time at all.

E-BooksOttoman Children and Youth during World War I

Ottoman Children and Youth during World War I
Nazan Maksudyan, "Ottoman Children and Youth during World War I "
English | ISBN: 081563627X | 2019 | 248 pages | PDF | 17 MB
Described by historians as a "total war," World War I was the first conflict that required a comprehensive mobilization of all members of society, regardless of profession, age, or gender. Just as women became heads of households and joined the workforce in unprecedented numbers, children also became actively engaged in the war effort. Adding a new dimension to the historiography of World War I, Maksudyan explores the variegated experiences and involvement of Ottoman children and youth in the war. Rather than simply passive victims, children became essential participants as soldiers, wage earners, farmers, and artisans. They also contributed to the propaganda and mobilization effort as symbolic heroes and orphans of martyrs. Rebelling against their orphanage directors or trade masters, marching and singing proudly with their scouting companies, making long-distance journeys to receive vocational training or simply to find their families, they acquired new identities and discovered new forms of agency. Maksudyan focuses on four different groups of children: thousands of orphans in state orphanages (Darüleytam), apprentice boys who were sent to Germany, children and youth in urban centers who reproduced rivaling nationalist ideologies, and Armenian children who survived the genocide. With each group, the author sheds light on how the war dramatically impacted their lives and, in turn, how these self-empowered children, sometimes described as "precocious adults," actively shaped history.
