2014 | 384 Pages | ISBN: 0801049245 | PDF | 6 MB
How do human beings today receive divine revelation? Where and in what ways is it mediated so that all generations can hear the fullness of the gospel? In this volume, distinguished theologian Matthew Levering shows that divine revelation has been truthfully mediated through the church, the gospel, and Scripture so that we can receive it in its fullness today. Levering engages past and present approaches to revelation across a variety of traditions, offering a comprehensive, historical study of all the key figures and perspectives. His thorough analysis results in an alternative approach to prevailing views of the doctrine and points to its significance for the entire church.

Machiavellism The Doctrine of Raison d'Etat and Its Place in Modern History
Machiavellism: The Doctrine of Raison d'Etat and Its Place in Modern History By Friedrich Meinecke (editor); Douglas Scott; Werner Stark
1997 | 487 Pages | ISBN: 1560009705 | PDF | 21 MB
Here is a study, by a recognized master in the field of intellectual history, of the challenge put by Machiavelli to the idea that there is a universal moral law governing human behavior. Should the political leader act according to the maxim of "my country right or wrong," or should elites follow the principle of "let justice be done?" Friederich Meinecke, an acknowledged founder of cultural history as a field, follows the discussion of this theme from Machiavelli through such major figures as Richelieu, Frederick the Great, and Hegel, and presents conclusions of enduring significance.

E-BooksThe Origins of Self-Consciousness in The Secret Doctrine

The Origins of Self-Consciousness in The Secret Doctrine
H.P. Blavatsky, The Editorial Board of Theosophy Trust, "The Origins of Self-Consciousness in The Secret Doctrine"
English | 2009 | ISBN: 0979320542 | EPUB | pages: 368 | 0.8 mb
Any attempt to explain the mysterious connections between consciousness and matter, and self-consciousness in particular, necessarily involves much complexity. Because all levels of relative reality are present here and now, the human being embodies the whole hierarchy of the cosmos: a microcosm of the macrocosm, to use an insightful Renaissance expression. Besides the physical human body, there is the dynamic structural plan of that body (called the 'astral body'), the desire nature, the life force that permeates all living creatures, consciousness involved in sense perception and practical operations, consciousness capable of universal thought and awareness, and pure consciousness manifest in pristine intuition. Above these six principles of human nature broods the luminous spirit called the Atman. Many people are seldom aware of anything more in themselves than the first five of these principles, although many also have intuitive glimpses of universal understanding, often as transcendent experiences which cannot be sustained. Because understanding cannot be separated from experience, and experience cannot be divorced from the way we live, think, feel and have our being, various spiritual traditions have offered practices to nurture these inner awakenings to our higher natures and to a greater awareness of spiritual reality. Theosophy connects together how we live our lives, what we think and how we focus our attention, the bold exploration of our inner natures, how we react to what comes to us (karma), and how we can build depth of awareness across lifetimes, with Enlightenment. Theosophy, therefore, connects ethics and action, including both physical action in the world and the action of our own thoughts. Where we are ignorant of all the dimensions of our circumstances-and, short of Enlightenment, we are all ignorant-motive for thought and action is fundamental for altering one's karmic trajectory and future incarnations. The selections from The Secret Doctrine in this book are gathered with a focus on the consciousness exhibited in Nature, its origin and destiny, and on human self-consciousness, in particular. This book therefore explores one vital current in the Ocean of Wisdom that is Theosophy. A thoughtful and persistent reading of these texts will radically transform one's understanding of the unity of self-consciousness and the world around us, and of one's place in the greater scheme of things.

E-BooksUS Supreme Court Doctrine in the State High Courts

US Supreme Court Doctrine in the State High Courts
Michael P. Fix, "US Supreme Court Doctrine in the State High Courts"
English | ISBN: 110881297X | 2020 | 210 pages | PDF | 2 MB
US Supreme Court Doctrine in the State High Courts challenges theoretical and empirical accounts about how state high courts use US Supreme Court doctrine and precedent. Michael Fix and Benjamin Kassow argue that theories that do not account for the full range of ways in which state high courts can act are, by definition, incomplete. Examining three important precedents - Atkins v. Virginia, Lemon v. Kurtzman, and DC v. Heller/McDonald v. Chicago - Fix and Kassow find that state high courts commonly ignore Supreme Court precedent for reasons of political ideology, path dependence, and fact patterns in cases that may be of varying similarity to those found in relevant US Supreme Court doctrine. This work, which provides an important addition to the scholarly literature on the impact of Supreme Court decisions, should be read by anyone interested in law and politics or traditional approaches to the study of legal decision-making.

E-BooksChristian Doctrine and the Old Testament Theology in the Service of Biblical Exegesis

Christian Doctrine and the Old Testament Theology in the Service of Biblical Exegesis
Gary A. Anderson, "Christian Doctrine and the Old Testament: Theology in the Service of Biblical Exegesis"
English | ISBN: 0801098254 | 2017 | 240 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
The Old Testament offers a rich palette of ideas, images, and narratives that help us unpack some of the more compact and opaque theological ideas of the New Testament. In conversation with both Christian and Jewish interpreters, prominent scholar Gary Anderson explores the exegetical background of key Christian doctrines. Through a deeper reading of our two-Testament Bible, he illustrates that Christian doctrines have an organic connection to biblical texts and that doctrine can clarify meanings in the text that are foreign to modern, Western readers. Anderson traces the development of doctrine through the history of interpretation, discussing controversial topics such as the fall of man, creation out of nothing, the treasury of merit, and the veneration of Mary along the way. He demonstrates that church doctrines are more clearly grounded in Scripture than modern biblical scholarship has often supposed and that the Bible can define and elaborate the content of these doctrines.

Summary of Christian Doctrine
Summary of Christian Doctrine By Louis Berkhof
1997 | 184 Pages | ISBN: 0851510558 | EPUB | 1 MB
Just as Berkhof's Systematic Theology is outstanding in its own field, his Summary of Christian Doctrine is unequalled as a popular handbook of Christian doctrine, written from an evangelical and reformed standpoint. Systematically arranged and helpfully sub-divided, A Summary of Christian Doctrine has proved ideal for church study-groups. Passages for memorization and questions for review at the close of each chapter enhance the book's value for the student.

E-BooksRussian doctrine of international law after the annexation of Crimea Monograph

Russian doctrine of international law after the annexation of Crimea Monograph
Oleksandr Zadorozhnii, "Russian doctrine of international law after the annexation of Crimea: Monograph"
English | 2015 | pages: 152 | ISBN: 6176841399 | DJVU | 1,8 mb
The monograph is a comprehensive study of approaches adopted by the Russian doctrine of international law regarding the 2013-2015 events which are directly or indirectly connected with international legal relations between Ukraine and the Russian Federation - the Revolution of Dignity in Ukraine, the use of force by Russia in Crimea, the annexation of the peninsula, and the armed conflict in parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The monograph offers an analysis of the key arguments produced to justify the "lawfulness" of Russia's actions and expose "violations of international law by Ukraine" and evaluates the conclusions drawn by Russian researchers from the standpoint of international legal norms and principles, the practice of their application, and modern approaches in global international law. The author identifies the changes that took place in the Russian doctrine on the main issues in international legal regulation of relations between states under the influence of the 2013-2015 events and summarizes the special features of contemporary doctrinal approaches and the main tendencies of their transformation. The book is intended for everyone interested in contemporary issues in international law.
