E-BooksPurinergic Regulation of Respiratory Diseases (2024)

Purinergic Regulation of Respiratory Diseases (2024)
Free Download Maryse Picher, Richard C. Boucher, "Purinergic Regulation of Respiratory Diseases"
English | 2011 | pages: 294 | ISBN: 9400712162, 9400736061 | PDF | 3,6 mb
We proudly present the first book to integrate all aspects of purinergic signaling in the respiratory system. The first chapters introduce basic notions of purinergic pharmacology and metabolism, which allows readers from all scientific backgrounds to fully grasp the importance of these signaling networks for airway defenses, including mucociliary clearance and inflammatory responses. Then, chapters are devoted to the groundbreaking discovery that chronic respiratory diseases, including asthma, cystic fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), present specific aberrances in purinergic signaling which essentially drive lung complications. The last chapters describe the animal models used to investigate purinergic signaling in respiratory diseases, and the therapeutic applications developed by the pharmaceutical industry based on receptor agonists/antagonists and metabolic correctors. This highly comprehensive manuscript constitutes an invaluable tool for beginners and experts to follow the rapidly evolving research field of purinergic signaling. Furthermore, the critical analysis of past clinical protocols should facilitate the identification of potent therapeutic targets, and provide a better understanding of the data acquired in current clinical trials.

E-BooksNeurochemistry of Metabolic Diseases Lysosomal Storage Diseases, Phenylketonuria, and Canavan Disease Ed 3

Neurochemistry of Metabolic Diseases Lysosomal Storage Diseases, Phenylketonuria, and Canavan Disease Ed 3
Free Download Sankar Surendran, "Neurochemistry of Metabolic Diseases: Lysosomal Storage Diseases, Phenylketonuria, and Canavan Disease Ed 3"
English | ISBN: 1536183393 | 2020 | 319 pages | PDF | 8 MB
Metabolic disorder caused by altered levels of metabolism resulting pathophysiological abnormalities often leads to childhood death. Several new developments on metabolic diseases research have been emerging. Gaucher disease is a lysosomal storage disorder caused by glucocerebrosidase gene mutations resulting glucocerebrosidase deficiency. Current studies show that the same gene mutations also contribute to the Parkinson's disease. Tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) has been widely used in treating patients with Phenylketonuria over a decade. Recent studies reveal that patients treated with BH4 over one-year period showed reduced levels of serum B12, folate and iron intake and therefore patients under chronic BH4 treatment needed to be advised to have additional micronutrients along with BH4. Macrocephaly was used as one of the important features to diagnose Canavan disease. However, a recent study showing a child with aspartoacylase gene mutation developed microcephaly. Hence, Canavan disease phenotype can be either macrocephaly or microcephaly. These are a few examples of recent developments on metabolic diseases research. Therefore, this book was aimed to compose current developments on metabolic diseases research for the use by broad spectrum of experts including Physicians, Neuroscientists, Neurologists, Biomedical researchers, Biochemists, Molecular biologists, Basic Science Researchers and Medical Students.

E-BooksEradication Ridding the World of Diseases Forever

Eradication Ridding the World of Diseases Forever
Free Download Eradication: Ridding the World of Diseases Forever? By Nancy Leys Stepan
2011 | 309 Pages | ISBN: 1861898614 | PDF | 3 MB
The dream of a world completely free of disease may seem utopian. Yet eradication, used in its modern sense to mean the reduction of a disease to zero by means of purposeful public health interventions, has been pursued repeatedly. Campaigns against yellow fever, malaria, smallpox, and polio are among the largest, most costly programmes ever undertaken in international public health. Only one so far has been successful - against smallpox in 1980, though eradication campaigns against polio and Guinea Worm Disease are ongoing. Are such programmes, then, worthwhile? Does setting an absolute goal help focus efforts in the health field; or does such a project lead almost inevitably to disappointment? This book surveys the history of eradication, covering all the major eradication campaigns and bringing the story up to date. It bases its narrative on the life and times of an arch-eradicationist, Dr Fred Lowe Soper (1893-1977). Known for his forceful style in public health, and his single-minded dedication to eradication, Soper was at the centre of all the campaigns and controversies surrounding eradication in his lifetime. Eradication is, of course, only one approach to improving people's health. Debates between proponents of Primary Health Care approaches to ill-health versus the eradicationists' approach have often been intense. Nancy Leys Stepan, well-known for her authoritative books in the history of medicine, suggests that today the two approaches may be complementary, rather than incompatible. Eradication is aimed at the general reader interested in the urgent problems of health and disease around the world, as well as specialists in the field.

E-BooksEcology of Wild Bird Diseases

Ecology of Wild Bird Diseases
Free Download Ecology of Wild Bird Diseases
English | 2024 | ISBN: 0815379455 | 400 Pages | PDF (True) | 26 MB
The book focuses on the ecology of the most important infectious diseases of wild avian hosts, especially those with high morbidity and mortality rates. Disease ecology is an important scientific approach to study the relationships and interactions between living organisms, their environment, and potential pathogens. Birds have high diversity, and the very special ability to fly and migrate. They migrate over long distances, and share ecosystems with other animals, even humans. They serve as the most important natural source of several pathogens with zoonotic potential. Bird-pathogen interactions are increasingly changing due to the continuous anthropogenic disturbances in habitats and ecosystems. With intensified climate change and improved environmental conditions for vectors, as well as higher susceptibility of avian hosts due to simultaneous exposure to environmental stressors (e.g., contamination, food limitation, etc.), the probability of emerging new infections and their expansion into new territories increase tremendously. The Covid-19 pandemic has shown that neglected ecological and epidemiological interactions between wildlife, domestic animals and humans are paramount to global health.
